The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.

One of the problems with these huge glass sections over the headlamps is the inevitable discoloration that occurs with age. The cars then tend to lose that jewel like quality that they seem to rely on for so much of their beauty. As many people are saying here on the forum, just the slightest change in angle of view is affecting how we are responding to the attractiveness of the car.

Very true, however, car manufacturers don't care about longevity anymore, that doesn't force you to open your wallet and buy a car from them. :D

Sad but true!

This M package on the F20 not only detracts from the original intention of "snoutiness" with its slashes and gashes but is also a lot harder on the eye.

No, in my opinion the M-Sport package does nothing to enhance the visual appeal of the F20 - if anything it worsens it.

I agree regarding the slashing of the snoutiness but I wouldn't judge by this crappy picture:

Like I said earlier, these are usually really bad representations - mostly because they tend to exagregate every possible line and in the same time give the car a very flat 2D look, like it was taken from afar and zoomed.

If that is a misjudgement from my side. Let's hope this M-sport package is as long lived as this one:

Come to think of it, that 2004 Aero kit would probably fit the F20 very well!

I think that the problem with all this pictures is point of view. Camera is in level with kidneys in all pictures, and that is about, i don`t know, say 60-70cm. And that is the problem with f20. If pictures were taken from point of view of average man, 180cm, i am sure it will be much better. Just my opinion.

I did some tweaking and squeezing to figure out why the front looked so "wrong". It does have some very interesting features which only seemed badly proportioned to me. here is what I did. and I think, considering that I haven't changed the design per se, the front looks kinda better now. what do you think?

The slimmer headlights does wonders to the way it looks - it replaces the original startled look with a more purposeful squint. The irony is that they made the top and bottom of the angel lights flat, which you would think would facilitate slimmer headlights, but then they went the other way and made the outer cover even bigger.

The headlights look pretty slim and proportionate in these sketches too -

But somewhere between that and production, things went very wrong -

Hah those 2 were picked to be the face of the new 1 series.. what a task..:D

Great interior, probably terrific driving skills and... a TERRIBLE FRONT!

Oh wow, I wish that M pack was standard!!! Makes the front look almost normal. And quite good.

I am disliking the non M pack more and more, however.

Just look at the nose. The M pack osmehow has different lines on the nose, sourrounding the kidneys. It just got the right ones, instead of the poor effort of the non-M pack.

Don´t like the cloth trim on this M Pack. At least on these low quality pics.

The new 1er is markedly more aggressive and will certainly turn heads. The M-Sport package enhances just that - Sportiness and lends a lower and even more aggressive stance whilst also enhancing the good curves IMO.

Man I just can't wait to see the coupè and sedan variants.:)

looks like a walrus!

Husseindesign, thanks for the PS. IMO, slimming the headlights really does wonders for the front.

Sunny, i noticed that too. I wonder why they super-sized for production

Maybe, based on that sketch, BMW would like to have a more aggressive looking headlight unit for their 2- and 3-door offerings. That profile sketch does look like a 3-door, but then again skethches are done to give an idea of the general aesthetics.

^^ and it is by far the best picture of all the pictures so far. Because of the M pack. Standard 1st is just too weird in pics, I will have to see that one in real life first. The M pack however, I already know I am going to like that one.

I must say, I'm quite intrigued that BMW chose to introduce a 4 cylinder 1.6 litre turbo petrol. I wasn't expecting this; the talk here at GCF from people in the know was a move to a modular 4-chopped-to-3 cylinder approach where a specific capacity of 500cc per cylinder was mooted. Now, we've got a +/-400cc per cylinder 4 pot in this mix too, leaving the bottom end open for just one 1.5 litre 3 cylinder?

So in my mind I had the range speculated like this:

128i - 4 cylinder, 2.0L TPT - 180 kW
123i - 4 cylinder, 2.0L TPT - 155 kW
120i - 4 cylinder, 2.0L TPT - 125 kW
118i - 3 cylinder, 1.5L TPT - 105 kW
116i - 3 cylinder, 1.5L TPT - 85 kW

But now with the 118i making 125 kW it appears to me that the 120i ought to fall away? I just can't see a logical gap for the 120i badge - especially considering the fact that the 1.6 litre 4 cylinder is now in the picture? The possible range now seems closer to this:

128iS - 4 cylinder, 2.0L TPT - 180 kW (rumoured to be given "iS" nomenclature)
123i - 4 cylinder, 2.0L TPT - 155 kW (speculative)
118i - 4 cylinder, 1.6L TPT - 125 kW (official)
116i - 4 cylinder, 1.6L TPT - 100 kW (official)
114i? - 3 cylinder, 1.5L TPT - 85 kW (expected but still speculative)

No, the 1.6L engine is a surprise, especially considering that it surely is the same PSA co-developed 1.6 litre Prince engine in the MINI? I thought the 1er would not be getting 1.6L MINI engines - weren't we led to believe this? Especially after seeing that fancy new modular engine/packaging video showcasing BMW Efficient Dynamics:
