Mercedes-Maybach E-Class Spy Shots
Spy shots of the upcoming Mercedes-Maybach E-Class have been released for the first time online.

While there has been speculation for some time regarding the existence of a Maybach version of the E-Class, these new spy shots all but confirm the existence of a super luxury version of the new E-Class.

Back in January of last year Mercedes USA CEO Steve Cannon strongly suggested that the E-Class would be receiving the Maybach treatment but little was discussed of the program up until this most recent batch of spy photographs.

Not much information is known regarding the specifics of the new Maybach E-Class. However, what we can discern by looking at the changes to the Maybach S-Class is that the new E-Class will feature a slightly longer wheelbase as well as a plethora of luxury-themed interior upgrades.

We assume the E-Class will receive similar interior accouterments to the S-Class. This means a super luxury treatment for the backseat area that will likely feature lounge-like seating.

Additional details regarding pricing, availability or trim options have not yet been released for the new Maybach E-Class. Rest assured, however, we will bring you those details as soon as they become available.

In the meantime, check out the gallery below for the very first look at the Maybach E-Class as it undergoes development work.

Not sure how I feel about a Maybach version of the E-Class. In the U.S. it would be a hard sell I think, I think. With the only V8 option outside of an AMG model it might work. I really don't know.

^ The Mercedes-Maybach E-Class may not come to the USA, we'll see. Motortrend interviewed the chief engineer recently, and he didn't reveal possible variants. :)

Q&A WITH MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS CHIEF ENGINEER MICHAEL KELZ
Go behind the scenes of the 2017 E-Class' development

Mercedes-Benz E-Class takes a big step forward in its latest generation, offering semi-autonomous driving technologies, an S-Class-inspired cabin, and many other improvements. We sat down with one of the key people behind the 2017 model’s evolution, Michael Kelz, chief engineer for the E-Class, CLS-Class, and GLC-Class, to find out what went into the car’s development.

Angus MacKenzie: The E-Class has been the car that defined Mercedes-Benz for decades. Is it still?

Michael Kelz: It’s really the core car of Mercedes, and of MRA, the new rear-wheel-drive architecture. MRA is the basis for the C-Class, the GLC, and the next CLS. Some components, plus the electrical architecture, will also go into the next-generation S-Class. From the first day we developed the MRA E-Class was always the core.

AM: The bandwidth of the E-Class range stretches from the Düsseldorf taxi driver’s diesel to the E63 AMG. Do the demands of one compromise the desires of the other?

MK: There’s benefit for every customer. The taxi driver gets a car that has a light, stiff, and rigid body structure, and the people driving the AMGs benefit from having a lot of components in their cars that are produced in large volumes and so are less expensive. And finally, the customer who only does 12,000 miles a year benefits from a car that meets the reliability requirement of someone who does 250,000 miles a year.

AM: What gave you the most sleepless nights during the development program?

MK: The new electrical architecture, the new head unit, and the driver-assistance systems such as Drive Pilot, which impact the engines, transmission, brake, and steering functions. The classical engineering — chassis, engine, body — is a lot of work but straightforward. The electrical architecture and systems were a major challenge, especially as they would be the basis for all cars coming in the future.

AM: How many E-Class variants can you build?

MK: Can’t say. None of them are really all the same. We didn’t try to calculate it, and I don’t know that we will ever build all possible variants.

This car looks absolutely perfect.

Competition has a hard work ahead if they are to top this.

What competition? ;) Wasn't this to be the hallowed "Year of the 5er?"

Jokes aside, yes! This car is an absolute masterpiece! It's perfect. Literally, perfect!

I'm glad the dropping line has been phased out with new models.

It was a good transition from the wedge-shaped models, but boy has it been wearing on me.

The E43 has a fantastic engine sound, lovely classic sporty six cylinder sound.
