Thanks for your review, it makes interesting reading, especially about the way it drives despite its high weight. This afternoon I tested the E 53. Was at the dealership to also test the S 580. I kind of liked it… a lot. It sort of wraps around you, drives small yet has as much room as I would ever need (I am 5 feet 11 inches and weigh 190 pounds. The fake sounds coming though the speaker is definitely subjective. I liked it, at least in the first drive, but I can see how it may sooner or later become jarring. I am sure my wife and kids would hate it.
Due to the AMG contouring of the front hood, I get a very pleasant sporty feeling. Mind you, I’ve never tried a real V8 AMG, so I have none of the hang-ups a true experienced AMG customer may have. Frankly, I found the power to be more than adequate (felt more powerful than the S 580 I drove just prior to it. The ability to drive 39 miles (per sales guy) on electric only is not shabby either.
This model must not have had the option that makes power reach 612 because I was quoted a power level of 577 hp. Also, this one did not have the super screen, which I found attractive.
The backseat is big enough that I fit behind myself with enough space.
The trunk is expectedly yet still surprisingly small, in particular the height. It felt barely one foot in height. However, the foot activated closure worked well, which surprised the salesman as apparently it is a touch and go consistency.
They are asking $99k US.
My next visit is to the BMW dealer to try the new M5.
Oh, and from now on I will stop worrying about the weight these hybrid beasts have. On paper the E 53 weighs as much or more than the S 580. It felt lighter. I drive a 4 Series Gran Coupe. 2015 model year than in my humble experience has been the standard for how “light” four door “luxury” car can feel. Compared to my car, k found the previous gen C43 to drive like a Subaru Outback. Yet the E 53 is a different league of tight. I can tell there must be a lot of systems working behind the scenes, but my “seat of the pants” feeling was super positive. From now on, I take the extra five hundred or so pounds in weight penalty as something purely theoretical (that is, until brake and tire replacement time).
