CLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class (C257)

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
I saw several today (and the AMG GT 4-door), when spec'd right they are beautiful cars.

I have to admit though there should have been a AMG V8 CLS and E Coupe/Cabrio. V8s are addictive and I'm not giving them up.

Is this car a sales flop or not? My dealer said they have sold very few. The number of UK registrations looks abysmal, I think less registered than AMG E classes which says something. I've seen one on the road. Someone the other week said discontinued next generation? I waited and waited before ordering only to find out no CLS 63 replacement was coming, but so glad I didn't hold out for it.

All midsize sedans and coupé-sedans are under huge sales pressure from various quarters: the shift to premium SUVs; pressure from below where previously compact sedans like the C-Class, 3 Series and A4 have burgeoned in size, luxury and performance; image vs. price vs. resale value. Down here in little ol' SA you hardly see a new 5er or E-Klasse on the road. Rare as hen's teeth whereas new X and GLy models are a dime a dozen. I think I've seen 3 (max!) new CLSes on the road since its release here some months back.

I saw a new black CLS a few days ago and the rear actually impressed me more than I expected. It looks better in real life than in pics or videos. The front is low and shark like in profile, I like it alot. Certainly think its more sexier than the previous bulging wheel arches model.

I've also noticed that the popularity of cars such as the CLS and/or Audi A7 has waned considerably in comparison to their predecessors. The series I A7 was quite the sales success, as was the C219 CLS (and to a somewhat lesser extent, its' C218 successor)-cars that became relatively commonplace quite quickly following their presentations. This has certainly changed.

Yep. And at no point was Mercedes thinking this gen 3 CLS was going to be a big seller. The investment into the AMG GT 4-door made sure of that.

Because more and more crossover models come to market. Soon they'll forget they even have a regular E sedan.
Or differently put; in not too long a sedan will be the exotic model in the range. So sad.

Is that really an issue though? It's not like the A7 has a unique cockpit.

I feel there are some very obvious quality shortcomings that are a result of this.

It's one of the key reasons we ourselves opted for the 8 series GC over the CLS. The step down in quality from the S to the CLS was all too apparent. The previous generation didn't have this issue.

The interior of the last CLS was nothing to write home about either. Slightly different from the W212 with the same quality.

Hmm. I don't know hey. The component and parts sharing was obvious, but the CLS felt plusher than our W212. Softer door plastics etc were part of the reason.

My issue is that the quality of the W213 interior is not up to standard from the start.

I've recently read that some automotive industry analysts are predicting a "comeback" of the sedan upon a fully entry into the BEV era. Packaging opportunities provide a suitable canvas for sleek, low ride height 4/5 seater 4 door cars that would clearly distinct themselves from SUVs' and crossover SAVs. The traditional 3-Box sedan, however, may be due for near extinction. Audi spokespersons, for example, have indicated that the "Sportback" configuration will become the standard for the brands "traditional" non-SUV/SAC 4 door passenger cars. Hence, the "sedoupe" may evolve into the "sedan"-and estates will become shooting brakes.

Slightly off topic, but have any of you recently gone from sitting behind the steering wheel in a Panamera to sitting behind the steering wheel of a Taycan?
I recently did in the Porsche dealership, and while the Taycan is quite lovely overall (some Aygo grade quality on the interior aside, which is incredibly poor), the seating position is almost like a freaking Van compared to the Panny. I blame those batteries in the floor for me sitting like 15 cm higher than in the Panamera in the seat's lowest position. I DID NOT LIKE THAT!

It is a very important detail that you mention, it seems that until the batteries are reduced and fit in the basement of the doors we will have to live with this, the i8 has the other aprouch, that of integrating them into the tunnel, although I do not think they reach for a full EV, in any case with the SUV fever that exists, I think only a few like us will care

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS GETS MBUX

After Mercedes-Benz presents the face-lifted E-Class for the first time with MBUX (NTG 6.0, software version FreshUp 3) in the spring, the CLS Coupé of the C 257 series will also be equipped with it in a timely manner. We expect it to become available in the first half of the year.

CLS Coupé: MBUX (NTG 6.0) can be ordered in spring

Contrary to the E-Class, the CLS Coupé will receive the MBUX system with an annual update. The C 257 series is therefore technically on par with the E-Class of the 213 series. The CLS will also offer the new steering wheel generation with touch controls of the facelifted E-Class model.

CLS is technically on par with the E Class in many respects

It is currently questionable whether the displays will be offered identically to the E-Class, i.e. without analog displays in the standard version - while the right multimedia display in the CLS with its 12.3″ is already part of the standard equipment. It is certain that the new touchpad will be found in the interior in the future, which is necessary to control MBUX. However, the new all-round monitoring system using Mercedes-Benz Urban Guard will also find its way into the CLS, as well as the interior assistant.

We will have to wait for all details about the vehicle and its equipment, at the latest at the Geneva Motor Show 2020 we expect further details. Incidentally, changes to the exterior of the CLS are not yet to be expected, these will follow at the earliest for the facelift.

Yep didn't expect that, but it makes no sense for the rest of the E-Class based models to wait for their facelifts for MBUX when the E gets it now. AMG GT should be up next.

The previous CLS and mostly the first gen model had much more plusher quality and nicer interior materials and seats than the E-class models they were based on. They looked totally different inside which made their E-class underpinnings not so easily noticeable like the new model.

For exterior and interior looks, I still think the 1st gen CLS is the best. Its a timeless classic.
