S-Class (W223) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Facelift 2024

The Mercedes-Benz W223 is the seventh generation of the S‑Class full-size luxury sedan, produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2020. It replaces the W222 S‑Class which had been produced since 2013. Production: 2020- Model years: 2021-
S drivers in my little bubble, would never seriously consider an E/5/A6. Me included. I don’t get why people think, you buy an S for space, size or whatever. You buy an S because of the car’s uniquely incomparable driving experience. You don’t get that with E/5/A6 kind of cars. Not by any stretch.
I concur. What I found so laughable was when they claimed that the GLS was an S on stilts. The S is an S is an S. A rebodied and stretched ML isn’t.

I fully agree.

Only with the Maybach treatment the GLS really starts to shine, at least in the interior.

But a GLS needs to be more special, instead of being a stretched GLE.

I hope Mercedes truly sees this. The market for high end SUVs is seemingly limitless. The next generation GLS could be a stand out give Mercedes a 1-2 punch at the top end. It should be twinned design wise with the next S. Move the GLE up some and then the GLC. Mercedes needs to realize that they don’t have to pander on price. Build the best possible product and price won’t matter to most. Mercedes of all companies should know this. It’s time for the GLS to become a star.

I concur.

The W214 is as good as I can remember an E being in terms of ride and refinement, however the S driving experience is unique. For all the criticism the W223 faces in terms of design and ambience, the chassis set up and refinement is exemplary, even with the standard airmatic.

With respect to the pressure this segment is experiencing, MB needs to grow some balls and pair the GLS's development alongside the S.

The lack of an S coupe is also a big concession made by MB in the segment and has lost S buyers to other brands.

Who's "they"?
And where are the people who claim the S class is a bigger E class?

I never meet those people and I feel left out. Or are we just lumping imaginary groups of people together to make an argument?

It's quite baffling both MB and BMW haven't done this for the upcoming generation. Particularly in these times where sedan sales are dwindling and SUV sales are blockbusters.

It's really no rocket science to develop a new S/7 with a SUV variant from the get go, instead of reverting to the GLE/X5.

I believe Mercedes attempted to market the GLS as an SUV S-class. Which is obvious copium.

Someone earlier in the thread suggested that the existence of increasingly plush E classes, 5 series and A6s will "cannibalise" the S/7er/A8.
Which tbh is bollocks.

Fair enough, I long ago stopped listening to OEM marketing nonsense and stuff like this is exactly why.
It's useless ever since the bean counters took over from the engineers, which must have been a good 20 years ago.

Ah ok, I thought the discourse was the exact opposite of that (going off Mick's post # 1114 and all the likes it got)

Possible. I’ve got a gut feeling it will go slightly upmarket. Just like the W140 did in the early 90ies.

Oh for sure. If only because the 7er is half a class ahead of the S class now feature- and size wise. Now I know people here hate reading that but it is what it is objectively seen.

Upmarket was meant in another way, like quality of used materials, appearance etc. I doubt very much the next S will have a theatre screen for the back passengers. Size wise I don’t think it will follow the 7.

If that were the case, they wouldn't have added it to the 5 Series LWB as well, in addition to all the Chinese cars with premium aspirations. You need to do your research.
The W224 will surely offer some variant as an option.

Yeah right.
The S class looks like a bigger C class and lacks features. You are not the one who decides what was meant which way.

They are going to rectify that next gen in every possible way, including size.

In North America, the Emirates and China perhaps.

But in the EU, no.

Uhm, more like the opposite. Cars like the E class and 5er are as big and more comfortable than the 7er/S class of 15 years ago.

Maybe I should clarify this a bit.

What I mean to imply that the E-Class, 5er and A6 segment has become far more relevant as a "luxury segment" here in the EU. Of course, provided that they are generously configured inside and out. Content matters more than what is perceived as "stately, imposing, boss master size". Of course with the exception of parliamentary car pools, the highest category hotel courtesy vehicles and those well-heeled businesspersons who are absolutely averse to travelling by rail or air and often need to travel very long distances, frequently ferrying equally well-heeled clients around.

I suspect that the appeal of the S-Class and 7er is greater and targetted at a more accomodating, "representation conscious" Chinese, Emirate and U.S.-North American clientele. Demographics that are more exhibitionistic, more "hedonistic, old world props of wealth" in general perception, especially in the U.S., and enjoy "flaunting what they've got". At least here in Germany, that's "not so cool" in view of the country's more recent severe economic and societal woes.

My 2 cents.

I don’t decide what I meant with my own words? Kliertje toch…
