Yes, but you'd be surprised how big of a roll side mirrors pay. I don't remember the exact figure but the side mirrors alone affect drag coefficient between around 5 to 10% (someone really needs to check me on this one). It's the part of the car that sticks out. That's why many companies want to move to use a camera instead of a physical mirror.
If this mirror is efficient, it will reduce drag, therefore increasing performance. It will also increase fuel economy. Besides, I think it looks badass
You may be right, but lets remember this is a civilian car that may not ever, or for the most part, use such a function. This car is not meant to be thrown--even though it can--on the track which such a design would be beneficial. We have to understand the aesthetics plays a major role in cars like the M3 and BMW knows that. So, I don't agree with you entirely if that is what you are going to argue is the sole purpose of a connector on the mirror back to the mirror base.

Also the rims and the interior as look more CSL than regular M3.
All i'll say is that M isn't ford where they add big engines and body kits and leave the rest alone.
