3 Series (E90) BMW E92 3er Coupe: official PR text & info.

The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model codes E90 (saloon), E91 (estate, marketed as 'Touring'), E92 (coupé) and E93 (convertible). The model was produced by BMW until October 2013 and is often collectively referred to as the E90, E9x, or occasionally, the E92. It was succeeded by the F30/F31 3 Series, and the F32/F33 4 Series. Production: December 2004 – October 2013
I can't help but think this is what the E90 should have looked like. It look's great, but I'm not totally understanding certain aspects of the rear.

I prefer the looks of the sedan and it is the same case for me when it comes to M5 vs M6. These new Bimmer coupes don't seem to turn out right.

Never said that, I just would like to know BMW fans reaction to that. Yes the plastic keeps weight down but I would think road noise is higher. Cheaper to replace body panels though in an accident.

I believe plastic isn't the word to use. It's not metal no, but neither is it "smart" -plastic or plastic like the "wood" in a Lexus.

as bmw fan it disturb me to say this but the rearlights on then E90 Sedan is ugly compared to the coupe. The new coupe is more elegant in the rear and profile but still with a aggressive front. Im sold on this car, in fact its the best looking Bangle car.

You forgot to mention that the E46 beats the Porsche 356.:D

Regarding the CSL it gets beaten by the GT3RS which is it's main competitor in terms of weight reduction and emphasis on track performance. Anyhow think we should in the future not mention Porsche and Porsche in the same sentences. :)

BMW vs Audi? Yes
BMW vs Mercedes? Yes
BMW vs Porsche? No

The up coming GT3 is quite a beast and it will be interesting to see the gap between it and the up coming M3 CSL.
easy buddy...think about m-coupe to cayman or mroadster to boxter s or the z4 to a boxter...i'm sure you cant compare gt3rs to a ///m3csl...it doesnt even have a normal logo for godsakes...they stripped all the back seat...its actually a belemic porsche...the ///m3 csl is merely fit

Actually I'm happy that it turned out like this, cause they gave Audi a big chance with the A5.
seams like Audi fans have envy...

PS are you trying to imply that AUDI can only sell the new coupe if there competition sucks...that would be terrible...

I know what you mean Luw. There's somthing about the proportions of the coupe that dont quite sit right and the detailing on the sedan is actually quite a bit more aggressive. I don't understand why that would be the case either. The coupe seems a bit too restrained and watered down in comparison to both the 5 series and 3 series sedans.

Regardless I'm waiting to see this car in the metal. The last 3-er coupe was gorgeous, so I'm still holding some hope for this one.

Also on a side note that plastic strip for the interior ambient lighting looks extremely tacky. Audi, and these days even Mercedes, wouldn't be caught dead with a detail that looks that much of an afterthought. Surely there was a better way of integrating additional ambient lighting. Other than that...I really like the interior and the rear seats actually look rather comfortable and inviting.

Oh about the use of plastic body panels, doesn't the current CL have plastic fenders as well? Im pretty sure it does. I seriously doubt it would compromise the car in any way. Kudos to BMW for keeping the weight of the car down. Every new MB (ML aside) seems to grow fatter every generation. Time to incorporate some more weight saving technology!

My gut reaction was "why make the coupe sedate and make the sedan overtly agressive?" However, if you take into account what BMW's been doing with their 4 and 2 doors, the sedate/classy approach of the E92 actually makes sense.

The new-gen approach has made aggresive bullys out of what were once classy and restrained sedans, and has turned the coupes - traditionally the roudy bunch of the BMW family - into class ambassadors.

In my eyes the formula works, because it takes our preconceptions about body styles and turns 'em on their head. The "Respectively Conservative and Sporty 3er Sedan and Coupe" have now become the "Agressive and Classy 3er Sedan and Coupe."

Both models appeal to different parts of me, but I certainly wouldn't feel as though I was leaving some testosterone at the door if I got into a E90 Sedan. The snarl on the car's face isn't what we've come to expect from a bread and butter volume hero, yet the coupe still plays its hand as the prestige poster-child of the 3er lineup.

Seems to me that BMW has found good equilibrium for spreading around the raw appeal of their 3er family amongst all of its models. It keeps things interesting, and manages to flatter the egos of BMW drivers, regardless of what car they're in.

(The X3 is exempt from the above statement. Not without its high-points, it still comes off as "the bitch" of BMW's lineup.)

E92 out perfoming the 911? Sorry but I can't see that happening. The M6 can't even beat the 911S. Since when has a bimmer been able to out perform a Porsche?

The M3 should technically be faster around the N-ring than the M6 (which should put it right at Carrera S time) and the CSL should be GT3 speed, however only time will tell.

Osna, you've suggested that BMW has switched the philosophy for its sedans and its coupes. I'd rather have both be aggressive, rather than one being sedate and another being aggressive.

The sedate-ness, to me at least, does nothing for BMW. They did it with the sedans before because they had to appeal to a larger crowd (being the bread & butter models), but now that BMW has attained a higher level of design acceptance with its Avant-garde designs, they should strive for making all of its models aggressive, or at least, looking decidedly sporty.

beckhammania23, thanks for coming through w/ the awesome pics, as always.:t-cheers:

I think the differentiation between both the coupe and sedans' designs was very much needed, the cars were even more sedate for being so much alike, then, if you ask me. The E90 is perfectly balanced but completely gutted of true beauty w/ those insanely horrendous tailights(f/l should correct that problem), I'm also not too big a fan of the kidney grills and how the top seperate from the rest of the grill(also to change w/ the f/l). The E92 is sporty, graceful, and beatiful all at once, I think the BMW design team compensated for any and all of the unloved designs w/ this one(though I like all of the product line, just iffy on the 6), the proportions are right, and for once, any angle can be taken in w/ ease w/ out having to kid yourself into liking it or hating it. E92 is a winner, and for this reason, other than it being a BMW, it's my top pick.:usa7uh:

^^I really like the E90 tail lights.... I think they add character to teh car. I cant really explain why I like them, they simply just appeal to me. ^^

I definitely prefer the sedan over the coupe. Its simply more proportionate and sensible in style. However I do like the coupe just not as much as the sedan.

This has to be the worst angle for this car. The rear just looks really long and weird.

The way the C-pillar flows into the boot reminds me a lot of the CLK.

I think quite the oppisite, I dont' see the length in the rear at all, it looks taut and atheletic. A lot like Shakira's bum.:usa7uh:
