3 Series (G20) [Official] BMW 3 Series (G20)

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
I personally don't care one bit for the new full-digital instrument display. But I guess one can put that down to age and sentimentality - I love the old-school look BMW "clocks".
I would like to see a pic of the basic analogue instrument counter, has anyone posted it yet? I also am old school and prefer the old BMW "red glow in the dark" analogue dials.

I posted it a couple of posts above yours.

Here's another photo. Again, from a prototype, but you can still the idea. It's very hard to find photos of the G20 instrument panel without the fully digital Live cockpit.

This photo actually shows it to be slightly different to what can be seen on the prototypes.

I like this alot, so clear and basic in appearance, but very elegant. It still appears to be digital but with silver rings, or am I wrong? The pointers on the instruments seem not surrounded by anything circular in the middle of each instrument.

I would rather have this than the full digital cockpit.

Yeah, it appears there are still (in part) silver bezels around the instruments. I think this looks better too.

For those that didn't know...

"Heilmer told me that BMW's characteristic orange-red hue is generated by light at a wavelength of 605 nanometers. The color was chosen to allow the driver to clearly see the instrument cluster, but also to be able to adjust to the darkness outside the vehicle quickly after looking up. The eye doesn't tire as quickly trying to read gauges illuminated with red-orange light, he said. BMW discovered this in the 1970s, and it's been both an aesthetic trademark and a conscious ergonomic decision ever since."

^ Very interesting side by side comparison, thanks.

Both cars have their styling issues; the F30 from the rear is more distinctly BMW than the somewhat generic rear-end of the G20. Put another way, the G20's BMW identity is less apparent from the back.

From the front, the G20 shows how ham-fisted the front shutline of the F30's bonnet is; it never bothered me before but it's clearly a lazy solution in context. The G30's not perfect either - despite having a very bold frontal DRG - as I feel the unified kidney grill is just a touch too thick-lipped. The G20 has the neater intersection at the base of the A-pillar with cleaner less fussy lines, though when viewed side-on this makes for a fatter front wing and an altogether bulkier front-end.

Front-on, though, the G20 has a much more distinct (and stronger) corporate identity which will resonate clearly with other road users. So, from the front, a BMW through and through, from the rear, less so. All imo, of course.

WHAT CAR? Car Of The Year 2019

Executive Car of the Year 2019: overall winner BMW 3 Series 320d Sport auto

VIRTUALLY ANY NEW BMW carries with it a huge weight of expectation, but even then, few are weighed down quite so heavily as a new BMW 3 Series. But boy oh boy, has this latest one delivered. It has seen off the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class in its price point – a huge achievement – as well as usurped the Jaguar XE as the best-handling car in the class.

The XE has long been held up as the last word in driving dynamics when it comes to executive cars, but the 3 Series offers chassis dynamism that will plaster an even bigger smile across your face. It’s the best-steering BMW of recent times and matches this with stellar body control and plenty of grip. Despite all that, it still manages to serve up a comfortable ride and relaxing refinement when you’re on the motorway.

In addition to making a strong 187bhp, our recommended 320d model’s diesel engine is impressively efficient, while Sport trim gets you a great contingent of standard kit.

Add to all that a class-leading infotainment system, plenty of space front and rear and a comfortable driving position and you can see why the new 3 Series is so deeply impressive.

As for our other price point winners, the Skoda's Superb is cavernous, cosseting and great value, but it won’t set your heart alight when you’re at the wheel, while the Audi A3 Saloon looks the part and is fun to drive but isn’t all that roomy. The new BMW 3 Series, on the other hand, encapsulates all of the attributes required in this market – and then some.

Wasn’t the 5 series What car , car of the year when it was released as well and it absolutely dominated, so this is a very good start for the 3er.

Nice black kidney grill and exhaust tips on M-Sport. The aluminum mesh effect interior trim also looked high quality.
