3 Series (G20) [Official] BMW 3 Series (G20)

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
Didn't you find anything to criticise about the 3 series which is of more relevance?

More relevant than the instrument binnacle, which you have to use every single time you drive the car?

The G20 is growing on me, having now seen it in more colours and with different trim, but the new display is something I am questioning still. But this childish offence being taken because someone dares criticise an element of a BMW is pathetic.

I'm personally liking various cars and brands and I'm no brand ambassador for BMW so I'm perfectly fine with people criticising BMW.
Here it's just different because when I saw that he posted something in the thread I knew that it would be something critical about the car. So I don't think my post is pathetic but trying to find something "bad" about a car, just because it's made by the "wrong" brand.

Maybe Artist is looking for a reaction, but it's true that you can't get more relevant than something you use literally every time you drive the car.

I personally don't care one bit for the new full-digital instrument display. But I guess one can put that down to age and sentimentality - I love the old-school look BMW "clocks".

Whoa, that looks good in Luxury Line(?). I can even tolerate those chrome arrowheads.

Yeah, I am not getting all the flack the new 3er is getting. It rectifies most of the F30's sleights and it looks good.

One criticism I've noticed in the reviews that I did not noticed or read before in 8er reviews is all the criticism that BMW's Pro Co-pilot thingy (seriously, I can no longer keep track of all these things) has been getting.

The 3 Series remains the frame of reference for the class, holistically appraised.

No it's not.

If you want a more premium car you go for the C-Class.
If you want a sportier drive you opt for the AR.
If you want more tech you pick the A4.
:D

I heard its a Milanese flag combined with the image of a cam belt devouring a valve.

You heard correct.

wow Tarek, you already driven all these cars by yourself to know this?

Since when has actually DRIVING a car been a prerequisite for people posting their extremely unwavering opinion on here? There are people in this very thread who haven't even SEEN the G20, and yet they're talking like they're an expert.

The digital gauge display clearly is a cluster and a loss of another traditional BMW feature.

A redesign of instrument clusters has been long overdue. In premium cars the rev counter has lost its relevancy because:

  • Hardly any cars are NA anymore and instead produce peak torque below 2,000rpm instead of close to the redline.
  • A big percentage of cars are automatic.
  • Gearboxes shift early in the interest of fuel saving and smooth power delivery.
  • There are 8-9 gears with the first ones being increasingly short rendering manual shifting pointless.
  • Manufacturers enhance engine note from low revs so that you don't have to rev high for visceral drama.

Moving on to the speedometers, the biggest important information is whether if not you are driving below the speed limit. Thus a huge dial reading showing zero to twice the legal speed limit is not necessary.

The above does off course not apply to performance cars but for "normal cars" it no longer makes sense to have two huge digital dials showing information that has little bearing on the driving itself. This partially explains why BMW have pushed the speedometer and rev counter to the outer edges of the instrument cluster, freeing up space for useful information about satnav directions, media etc.

I am of a distinctly different view, when it comes to actually driving and not namby pambying about, the two most vital pieces of information are speed and engine rpm. In both my F30 and 981, I pay as much attention to rpm in one as the other. Whilst the read-outs have a different meaning, the information is no less useful in either.

Heck no, the more I think about it the more integral the rev counter is to the ICE driving experience.

I'm less concerned about it being digital and more concerned about how cluttered it looks. VAG's solution is much cleaner looking.
