M3/M4 [Official] 2021 BMW M3 and M4 [G80 & G82]

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

There is something wrong going on at the M3 rear door where it meets the rear fender. I think another poster already pointed this out. Other than that I definitely prefer the M3 to the M4 also, but need to see it in person for a final decision.

BMW could have widen the whole rear quarter a bit, and extend the wheel arches to allow the angle/curve transition from rear door to rear quarter panel smoother, instead it went with plastic strip to cover the regulation! The worse part of it is the uneven door gap width. Attached similar quarter view between G80 vs F80 for reference. G80 rear quarter panel still suffered that dent / depression reflection, whereas F80 M3 with wider rear fender arches made enough angle/curve transition between rear door gap and rear quarter panel. Since G80 is still pre-production model, not sure if BMW will make improvement before next MY2021 summer release next year, I know it's wishful thinking!

There is no M-DCT for the new M3/M4. It is a ZF speed "Steptronic" auto.

As far as specifications, these are the dimensions. Looks like they are now almost as big as the E60 M5/E63 M6.

M-DCT.

Just re-checked on BMW press releases site:

The more I see of it, the more I'm starting to change my mind which is not the case for the G22 for me (which I still can't stand). The grille execution on the G80/2 is much more convincing, assured. It also works well with the rest of the car's design - it just fits in better - and I'm excited to see it in the metal. It's still not pretty that's for sure!

Project manager gave insight to this topic in the JP video (it is german ... so I skip linking it).
Onnthe M3 they couldn't extrude the rear fender any further. The sheet metal would have been torn otherwise. So they had to resort to this black plastic strip.

I prefer the front end of the M3/M4 over the G22 which doesn’t look 100% right and the overly evolutionary G20 nose.

Conservative me, still prefer the nose of the G20. But - yes - G80/2 is a far more confident design over that of the G20.

Why does AVH get away so easily for the shit he is doing with BMW design?

Wasn't he the guy who gave us E65? Should have been fired then and had a permanent wrist bracelet that would have set off alarms if he went 50 feet near a pencil.

Pre-LCI F20/F21 was pig ugly too. Didn't stop me buying one and so did many, many, many others! I will probably end up with one of these M3's too.

Do I need to seek help?

If BMW offers the car with cracking finance deals, many will be tempted. Those who won't should consider waiting for the next M2.

The current M2 is still a cracking car and some prefer it to the M8 Competition which on paper is a superior car. ICE cars have reached a point at which newer sports cars aren't necessarily emotionally more rewarding than older models.

However, I will test drive the new M3 as soon as possible.

I was going to put you a "drama queen" "disagree" "dislike post" all together but there are no more negative ratings in GFC, (what happened mods?) So now it only remains to fight with each other by writing?

Relax my friend, he is only kidding. You don't honestly think he puts the design of some car in the same category as killing baby seals? It's Artist humor and it's still quite decent actually.

Headlights are too big, even bigger than Alfa Giulia.

Headlights and rear lights of the 4er are average AT BEST. They're far, far superior on the 3er.
And between the front and rear lights of the 4er.....I don't know which I dislike more :(

Oh boy, what is it now?

Weight gain of 203 Kilogramm? Did I read that right?

Stop. We need to wait for independant measurement, imho.
E.g. for a reference point like sport auto, which do the weighting always with full tank, no driver.
In the cited video from JP, where the G8x presentation did take place in the M studio in Garching at the M GmbH, the G8x project lead said:
It is possible to get the G82 Competition down to a weight of 1700kg. But not below this.
So chosing the track pack with bucket seats and CCB and avoiding other more heavy addons should get you there.
IF this would be true - which remains to be seen - then we talk about a weight increase of about 70kg!
My reference is a F82 Comp. With DCT and OPF (which also means no carbon prop shaft anymore) which tipps the scale around 1630kg (full tank, no driver).

When asked about the reason of this weight gain, they were a bit "evasive" ... they said, if you look at the G8x from underneath, you would understand, looking at the extensive measures being taken to maximaze stiffness to a new dimension ...
Since F8x already was quite stiff, I don't know how realistic this is, that they added 50kg of strut bracings, etc.
Another thing was interessting. When asked, why the U-form carbon brace in the engine bay has been replaced with steel braces, they did give explicit answers:
1. They also looked at carbon braces.
2. They are worse in case of certain torsional impacts, which they have to deal with in G8x, where the used steel braces perform better
3. They are using hollow steel braces, so weight is almost no issue.

So I get it that BMW isn't McLaren or Porsche and cannot afford fractioning production into too many versions, therefore needs to make color choice compromises. E.g. the Kyalami Orange interior is kind of brown and orange at the same time and as such covers both the need for a brown/tan option and the need for a 'hot color' option, instead of having to offer, say, brown and red separately

Screenshot-20200924-103352.png

However I'm not sure that doing away with red altogether is acceptable compromise on an M car. Many previous M models did offer pure reds (such as Imola Red) or scarlet orange-red (Sakhir Orange), all of which look stunning against the usual black/metal/carbon background and offer that unmistakable archetypal sportscar look

Now getting a bright red option on top of Kyalami Orange is probably unrealistic due to color proximity, however a darker/riper bordeaux/wine red would do wonders without overlapping with Kyalami Orange. Such a bordeaux red, I am sure, would get a high adhesion rate from those buyers who'd opt for an innocuous 'non-color' exterior paint (black, grey, white) to tone down the exterior garishness but would like to offset that moderation with a distinctive interior color, yet can't quite stomach the carrot orange or the baby blue/neon yellow. Making such a red available would ultimately save them from having to reluctantly default to the conventional black/white, and may also prevent them from deserting to Audi or Mercedes.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
