iX [Official] BMW iX (i20) [2021-

The BMW iX is a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the German automobile manufacturer BMW. It was unveiled in concept form as the Vision iNext at the 2018 LA Auto Show, and then in its production form in November 2020. The iX is BMW's second fully electric vehicle after the i3 in 2013, and the fourth BMW i sub-brand model.
Everyone praises BMW about EVs, but they don't talk about Mercedes' plans. They are currently busy developing 3 different EV platforms. We will see cars with these three platforms on the roads in the next 2 years. Don't you think it's a more aggressive plan than the neue klasse?

But selling ICE and EVs in parallel doesn't necessarily mean they will be on the same platform, which I think was the point @leylandi was making.

Having said that, BMW is making the right moves by making NK a dedicated EV platform and given NK based vehicles will be the volume sellers. While Mercedes is doing the opposite making the MMA platform shared platform for both ICEVs and BEVs.
Mercedes will not produce EVs with combustion platforms. (MMA is an EV platform that can integrate a combustion engine) Cars that will be sold together with combustion cars, but all have an EV platform. The car that will replace the GLE will be an EV only. From now on, every new car will have an EV platform. That's why the lifespan of existing models is being extended. @bmwblog

WTF. An "EV platform that can integrate a combustion engine", is not a dedicated EV platform. It is a shared platform.
The Stellantis STLA platform is also like this. It is actually an EV platform. It is designed to accommodate a small combustion engine.

The "electric first" platform, which can also accept internal-combustion engines, will debut a new generation of technology and set the standard for future Mercedes architectures to come, CEO Ola Kallenius said.

Yes, Stellantis, the leader of EVs? They are probably doing it churn out mediocre vehicles for a gazzilion brands as cheap as possible. Great example for Mercedes to follow!

If it is designed to accommodate a small combustion engine, it will have compromises. It is as stupid as making a digital camera that can accommodate film.

I believe it is quite clear no one shares your enthusiast for MB nowadays. It is a brand that is not only lost in terms of design, it is also at its lowest point in terms of the quality of its cars, and way behind with its EV strategy, with cars that are both fugly and mediocre from a technical point of view.

So of course people is not talking about MB right now.

Who said Mercedes was following him? just an example

It was said that it would be the technology flagship and revolutionize it. It actually turned out to be an ordinary electric SUV. There is no innovation it brings.
Go to the previous pages of this thread, the tests and opinions are posted there, it is the best current EV SUV according to everyone, and four years after its presentation it is still that way, does that seem little to you?

It's your assumption. The MMA platform was announced before the STLA. If there is a pursuit (of course there isn't) it can't be Mercedes doing this. Unnecessary discussion.

That's a nice one my man!
Difference wouild be that a camera doesn't get you stuck when unable to get fuel. But yeah, that's just nitpicking on my part of course. For the rest a camera works in the same fashion as the second most expensive thing a person will buy in his life.

@leylandi don’t get yourself banned. Mercedes isn’t wining the EV war right now it must be admitted. The MMA and MB.EA platforms will bring more conventional vehicle shapes, in house tech, and competitiveness. But that’s not for this iX thread.

That makes it sound like Mercedes is some kind of leader when it comes to EVs. They are as lost a kite in a storm.
Well, he's wrong. The G65 X5 and iX5 are on the same platform. Same as G67 X7, iX7

I knew the camera analogy would get you going. :)

But just to be clear, a BEV made on a platform that can also be used for a ICEV does't get you unstuck if you are "unable to get fuel". It is still a BEV, just a compromised one, because the company wanted to save some money.

Ha, you do realize that you are arguing that Mercedes came up with a stupid idea first!

Actually, an excellent analogy for shared platforms. Not talking about Kodak refusing to go digital, but companies like Pentax and Nikon making cameras for many years using the inherited "platform" (reflex-DSRL) while Sony and Fuji went many years ago with blank sheet design (mirrorless) specific for digital cameras, and have been killing it ever since.

Today, Pentax is a tiny, vanity project of the Ricoh company and Nikon has been struggling for many years and losing market share at huge steps.
