Which still doesn't guarantee that you not going to throw a connie through the block.
Martinbo, I think you are mistaken in your interpretation of the engine issues of the 991.1 GT3. As a 991.1 GT3 owner myself, it was a topic of great importance......not because I intend to sell my car, but because I intend to keep it long term. So let's be clear about things.
There were 2 separate engine issues related to the 991.1 GT3.
1) For the early production 2014 models (mine included), there was the famous issue of engines blowing up/catching fire because of connecting rods going through the engine block. This was a serious problem, so much so that Porsche halted deliveries temporarily and then had to replace the engines with brand new ones in all the cars which were manufactured/delivered already. For me, my car had already arrived at the dealership when this occurred, so my car got the engine replacement at the dealership before I picked it up to drive home for the first time. Porsche even paid me significant $$$ at the time as compensation for the delay this caused. This problem is solved, and no longer an issue with any of the 991.1 GT3 cars regardless of the model year.
2) The more concerning issue over time was premature finger follower wear in the engine, which led to some cars experiencing a CEL when driving at high rpm's. I already wrote about this in detail in post #748 above in this thread. But to sum it up: Porsche has listened to the concerns of owners and investigated the issue thoroughly. The have identified the problem as a metallurgy defect (inclusions) in a small number of finger followers. Porsche claims that the VAST MAJORITY of cars do NOT have this issue. Given their findings, Porsche has stepped up and announced a 10 year engine warranty for all 991.1 GT3 cars to cover this issue. If a 991.1 GT3 experiences this issue within this 10 year period, a new engine will be provided. In other words, my 2014 GT3 has an engine warranty until 2024, which will be in place longer than the engine warranty of a brand new 2018 991.2 GT3.
I'm just impressed at the duration of the engine warranty and the engine replacement they will provide if it happens. It re-inforces to me that this is really a low probability event. In fact, when you look at forums like Rennlist, the number of people who has been experiencing this issue has dramatically decreased recently, adding to the impression that this finger follower issue is limited to a small number of cars. Many people have driven their 991.1 GT3 very hard on multiple track days, trying to cause the problem so they can get a new engine!......and many have failed......LOL.
Don't get me wrong: the face lifted 991.2 GT3 is a fantastic car and like all face lifted cars, is an incremental improvement over the 991.1 GT3. If you can get a 991.2, DO IT! But if you can't, I can guarantee you that the 991.1 GT3 will not disappoint, as it is way more car than most people can use in terms of performance.
