Well it has to be, imagine what will happen if the new car is inferior to the old one.
Christ you're dour, do you not think he meant in relation to the time period it was launched in and contemporary competitors? Is the F10 5 Series better than the E39, in your opinion?
Anyway, here are some of the cited review:
Cooper
Autocar: "there is also a newfound maturity and sense of quality that makes the car even more pleasant to be in and a good deal more rewarding to drive. "
"The new engine is also delightfully entertaining and boasts a quite extraordinary operating range, giving the Cooper solid acceleration allied to a wonderfully relaxed nature when pulling taller gears. "
"new standard six-speed manual gearbox, which boasts shorter travel and more positive feel than the unit it replaces. "
" In fact, it has been further enhanced, with the new suspension providing a distinctly calmer feel, while the revised geometry at the rear gives a more secure feel through corners, both under load and on a trailing throttle. "
"
It is a now more rounded car than ever before as well as a real entertainer "
4.5/5
Top Gear: " as you gather speed, all this car's moves are more polished than of old. "
"Any car that reacts so quickly but so predictably, and gives you so many options, and connects you so intimately to its moves, cannot fail to be a bundle of laughs."
"The seats are new and rather excellent. The quality is a step on too. Not at Audi levels of touch-and-feel, but the cheaper bits of plastic are disguised by their interesting design."
" it's more refined and better-riding..... Yet they did that while preserving the stuff we do care for. It's more lively, it sounds more interesting and the handling's more fun and visceral. "
Autoexpress: 5/5
Cooper S
Automobile Mag, Georg Kacher: " While the first- and second-generation models were wanting in the quality department, the materials are of a much better grade in this latest iteration, and the available equipment is more comprehensive. The touch controller is every bit as intuitive to use as BMW's iDrive "
" Pushed hard on the autobahn, the new Mini is more firmly planted, less susceptible to crosswinds and pavement grooves, and quite stable overall. "
" Although the new Mini copes much better with longer undulations, it needs a flat surface to excel. "
"As it should be, the Mini III is a minimum-input, maximum-effect driving machine. "
"At the end of a ten-mile stretch of magical road, we instantly turned around and went back for an encore. "
" remarkable full-throttle grunt. As long as you keep the revs up by shifting down a gear or two, this little road shark will successfully chase much bigger fish."
Autocar: " More than capable, with a sporting nature that's noticeable from the moment you fire the engine. Although it lacks the flexibility of the new three-cylinder unit used in the Cooper, the new four-cylinder engine offers improved low-end response, added mid-range and a more involving character than before. "
" When it does begin to slide, it does so in a progressive manner, and there is greater clarity in the way the Cooper S behaves at the limit. However, although the ride is smoother than that of the outgoing Cooper S and has a slightly more forgiving feel, it remains quite firm and lacks the initial absorption in compression and subtlety in rebound that the new Cooper possesses. "
Top Gear: Re. the Cooper "And, maybe because of the extra nose weight, it just doesn't feel so well-wired as you turn into a sharp corner. The suspension is firmer, but on the roads where I tried it, that just meant it was biffed about more - there was no dividend in agility. This despite the fact this car was specced with the optional adaptive dampers. There's slightly more understeer and less steering feel too. So I'm not sure the S is extra cash well spent, unless you need to do a lot of main-road overtaking. "
