Vs Mercedes S-Class vs. BMW 7-series

^^

In the US, 7-Series sales have declined rapidly, despite the flagship Bavarian model being on the same level as the S-Class just four years ago. Next year could be even tougher for the 7-Series as Audi will be introducing their self-driving A8 flagship, which means that BMW has to do something to shake things up.

"The 7-Series hasn't managed the same 'aha' effect as the new S-Class, which is what Audi will be going for, too," said Juergen Pieper, at analyst at Bankhaus Metzler. "It's lacking that special something."

It seems that, internally, BMW is blaming the 7-Series' slow sales on the too few technological advances and perhaps most importantly, a boring design, said the person familiar with the company's thinking. Plus, the 7-Series is not available in as many versions as the S-Class, which you can also get as a Coupe, Convertible and Maybach.

I see. So the 7er is doing perfectly fine then.

No need to worry.
Do you really think that the advantage the S has over 7er in sales is all down to S500,S600,S63/5 AMG Coupes and Cabrios,, plus the 500 and 600 Maybach?

You can't be serious.

I dare say the difference will be even larger once the new Mercedes in-line 6 diesel engines become available.

BMW board worried? Where is this coming from...??

Well, it definitely got them thinking and put the 8-series coupe and even the 9-series plans into work to try to match the S Class. The BMW bigwigs know the current new-ish 7-series is done like Britney Spears. It's hit its sales peak already (usually the first 18 months on the market) and sales will only fall from here on. It will be even tougher next year with the S Class facelift and new A8.

It will be a tough 5 years ahead if BMW does not hit a home-run with the new 5-series. I'm not saying the Quandts will be on dire straits and live on toast for the duration. But it's not gonna be five easy years ahead.

Probably. Same as MB has been doing to their model lines.
I can agree on BMW being late though. There should already have been a 7er coupe in the F01 generation.

Not much different than the last 5 years I suppose....
I am happy that you MB fans are happy with the sales revival of the brand, but there's no need to downplay BMW for that.

So some random article from some nobody on Carscoops is now official BMW word? Pleeeeaaaseeee......

^^ not my concern. I just posted what I read online.

lol I see.....

Probably. Same as MB has been doing to other models.

I'm not laughing at BMW, not at all. The 7-series is a very very capable car. But somehow Mercedes pulled a big rabbit out of the hat with the W222 S Class.

I'd love to have a 740Ld with all the bells and whistles. But not at list price.

Im laughing at BMW, i often do this, its my favourite thing to do..besides eating coconuts and having sex.

The original article was published by Bloomberg, and includes quotations from other consultancies as well. Besides, there is a screenshot on one of the previous pages. So the credibility is there.

What some of you fail to notice is that this isn't 7 Series Sedan vs S Class Sedan battle - it's BMW's flagship model vs MB's flagship model.
The article points out BMW's mistake of not bringing new products in it's flagship portfolio (unlike MB), and difficulties in competing in a full size limousine car segment, which is not BMW's natural segment. 2 tonne limousine is not a sports car, no matter how much carbon you put in it.

The worrying thing is that BMW won't be bringing 7-Series Coupe (8 Series) before 2019?! By that time, next-gen S Class will be ready, and Coupe will follow soon after that.

And Audi is pushing for a comeback. And next XJ will be here soon. And then the new S Class will come.

Nobody is downplaying BMW, just stating a simple facts. And for that, Mick was right - this generation is a hugely missed opportunity.

(On the side note - let's not forget portfolio of i-vehicles. It is unacceptable that new vehicles won't come before 2020, especially after solid start i3 and i8 had.)

They are not worried. Primarily because the market is changing there is an opening for more exclusive vehicles which is where the 8er and the 9er will fit in. There is a new market trend of more exclusivity in regards to further progress of technology and driver assistance but not with the conventional.
The S-Klasse and 7er are no longer the luxury segment.
They are clarified as the affordable luxury segment which means anyone can afford a 7er and S-Klasse and that the reason to being exclusive gets lost because you pass five or six within a second if you are in Paris for example that you are no longer just you.
This is where Maybach comes in to provide that exclusivity as does Rolls-Royce with the Ghost and the Bentley Flying Spur. Its a stretch of exclusivity not everyone can reach but the select few do.
Don't believe in a second that the S-Klasse will be the final ceiling for Mercedes in the future.

BMW has only the 7er whereas all S-Klasse sales are grouped together. Consider the amount of S-Klasse models - Standard ,Long,AMG,Maybach,Maybach Pullman,Coupe,Cabrio then the 7er is outnumbered as it is a single product.
But there is no issue in regards to the 7er because the vehicle has not even been a year on the market. That will be in October but there is still the M760Li,750d and the brilliant new 740Le models around the corner so it is too early to write off the car yet.

They talked shit about the forum members that said BMW cars can be had at huge discounts a few months ago.
And now this article is written by some joker.. ( bloomberg..highly respected publication).
BMW went out and said they will loose the top spot this year..
But nothing fases a BMW fan, everything is great..its bmw everything they decide and make is the bomb!

BMW must pay you well, cause shit i can't afford one of those and i have a decent salary.
But sure ANYONE can afford them, ask around on this forum if ppl can afford such cars.
Talk about being blind to reality, but then again aren't you a robot? someone told me:D

Scott, we know.

But one of the surprises when I spoke to one of the Heads of Daimler at the Maybach launch in Hong Kong last year was that they held back on the styling and gadget count. Imagine how much farther ahead the W222 would be if Daimler had freed Willy.

Btw, the folks at Woking driving you mad yet?
