I have to say, I've never had a problem with the direction the 7-er has taken aesthetically (in terms of the exterior), and I accept why people struggle finding it a 'good-looking' car, but now having seen a few more out and about, I'm really liking it a lot more, certainly in my top three 7-ers. I'll still lament the loss of proper flagship versions, but admittedly, for now the relative novelty of the M70 is intriguing, though perhaps somewhat hamstrung on power in order to not outshine the ICE versions too much.
Whereas there's been some blithering on about stuff like the Citroen C4, I can very honestly say the only car I've confused for a G70, was a Rolls-Royce Spectre - on the road it is powerful, it has that level of presence.
The interior, from the drivers seat, I'm still not a fan of. This isn't so much a comment on the design choices of the interior as much as just lamenting the loss of driver focused interiors in favour of lounge style interiors and screens. As far as the back seat goes, I still have no problem with the big screen of the door screens, and it's ample in terms of comfort.
In the real world, the reasons for not buying one are plentiful, but they also apply to all it's competitors - hence, outside of a Euromillions win, it would never even enter into my mind how it would be to own one* - but I think crucially, it is desirable enough that I would buy one, if the circumstances were correct - that's something I legit can't really say about the much more attainable 3-series, for example.
*the day to day practicalities and pros versus cons don't favour such cars for me.
Outside of daydreaming about Euromillions, in the actual real world, I've obviously seen quite a few 7-ers, but disregarding those seen in service around Goodwood, or those around BMW facilities in Munich, I've only seen a couple in the wild (both in London). Surprisingly I don't think I've seen many more S-Classes - again, a couple driving around London (the ratio of G-Class to S-Class being about 3:1 in my personal experience), the W222 being a relatively much more common sight. I'm saying this obviously as a BMW fan, but seeing the 7 feels like an event, it's a bit like seeing a proper Alpina for me (the cruel irony being obvious).
I've even come to be more tolerant of the two tone colour schemes. I saw a Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge with a two-tone Black and Blue scheme which looked great, I think the 7-er works best with solid colours when two tone and I wouldn't be against such a thing...
... the two-tone schemes with the Oxide Grey upper all look pretty terrible in my humble opinion.
And having said all that, I don't have much to say about the S. It doesn't move the needle for me. I think the Hyperscreen is a wasted opportunity on the EQS, and though it's execution probably leaves the interior worse off it could introduce some value to the S, but again, as with the 7, as much as anything I'm just not keen on the current direction of interiors.
Both cars make me appreciate the 3-box saloon, something to be treasured before everything goes the way of blobs andEV's. edit: I meant blobs and SUV's.
