Vs Mercedes S-Class vs. BMW 7-series


Go to Paris or any large city in the World or even Germany and see that exclusivity is actually a common sight.
Berlin,Hamburg and Frankfurt actually have S-Klasse taxi cabs. (As do 7er)
So yes the opportunity to own a high end luxury car in these days is actually more probable and accessible than before.


Those are probably base S320's and 730's.

Plus what do you want the Germans to drive as taxis, Toyota's?

And now,the sales of W222 S Class leads G11 7er by a big margin.In Chinese local market, 7er's discount rate is above 20% ,S Class is less than 10%.

BMW has no profit, they probably operate with losses...

So BMW is going to get whacked by Chinese dealers for incentive fees and rebates this year again like last year?

But anecdotally, from my experience last week, I got the feeling that sales of even the S Class has slowed in Southern China. I drove the S500 up to China last week and suffered a puncture. The standard run-flat Pirelli's are 102Y weight-rated but the tyre shop couldn't find a tyre for me after six phone calls around the Dongguan province. At the end they found me a 98Y rated Pirelli run-flat tyre (really for the light S400) so I could get going. The tyre shop is an official partner of the local Mercedes and BMW dealer and he said business is only so-so in recent months.

The S-class and 7-series cabs are probably those at airports or hotels, they not owned by private people. Even the Middle East which possibly has the most ratio of expensive cars per person population in the world, the luxury car such as an S-class and 7-series are not common as a 3-series or C-class. Most people nowadays are driving SUV's and crossovers so these cars are still not sold by the dozen and are only driven or owned by the elite and wealthy people.

The interesting thing about this chart is that the fluctuation of the sales volume of the 7-series pretty much coincide with the release of the S Class of each generation. The E32 did very well inititally because the W126 was really old and tired by 1987. Sales of the E32 fell sharply when the W140 was released. So on and so on.

Btw, the E32 740iL was my favorite 7 series of that generation.
 
During 2009 to 2013,the sales of F01 7er surpassed W221 S Class every year in China.But things has changed,W222 S Class is dominating the segment right now.

According to feedback of local dealers and consumers,the main shortcomings of G11 7er are:
exterior design is not better than F01,especially the shape of headlights and rear lights;
the luxurious atmosphere in the compartment is not as strong as W222,although its material and craftsmanship is equal or even better.Overall,G11 is not a breakthrough product,too evolutionary,lacking refreshness.

That's not the case @klier. I'd call myself a Friend of BMW as well. But I'm genuinly dissapointed by the G11. If it's in standard trim or everything on board trim like the M760. The car is just too much 'more of the same' (F01). I wish it was a special and remarkable 7er this time, but it isn't. That is what I call sad.

The M760Li will be but a tiny fraction of the number of 7 Series sales. It looks good, but then there are many cars which look good in their ultimate, high-end configuration, but in the lower spec versions look distinctly average.

I'm sure the 7 Series will drive very well indeed, and I hope to find out one day. But the reaction of some people in response to the 7 Series is as over the top as the reactions to the S-Class when it was launched.
 
@klier does have a point here, if you compare the highline versions to their normal siblings. A standard S is a bit 'plain' compared to a S65 AMG. Come to think of it, this is something the car manufacturers created recently. I mean, look at the W116 and W126. The only difference in exterior between a standard 280 S/260 SE and a 450 SEL 6.9/560 SEL were the wheels...
 
I think the S-Class in it's most basic form still looks like a flagship, with its big grill and three-pointed star.

But it's just purely subjective.
 
That S350 looks about as dull as dishwater. And the same as a C class. Thanks, but no thanks. If they took away that happy faced ugly standard bumper in the front it would already be a lot better. I guess the FL will fix that, but as of right now, an AMG pack is a must. And an M pack isn't a must for the 7er.

Now, lets continue this in IC.....it's a good conversation, but not in this thread.

I am still amazed by how much buthurt are the three stars groupies when a man dares to don't give a crap about the mommies carriers they worship. Why don't you people stop being obsessed by the BMW side and keep your head cool like the BMW team does ? And btw @SKY why did you rate the post old ? Disagreeing is normal but old ? What's so old about someone liking the BMW look to find the most BMWish car the most appealing car in the segment.
