@Merc1 , and how about that 0-62 gap?

"The Mercedes is the long-standing king of the luxury limos, but for this latest contest, the 7 Series steals its crown. It does so because it beats the S-Class on the qualities that matter most for a luxury car: ride comfort, refinement and smoothness."

"In most areas the BMW pips it – even if only by a tiny amount – and, brilliant though it still is, that's enough for the Mercedes to slip into second place here."

"Beyond that, the BMW it’s a limo that, as long as you’re looking at it from the inside, feels truly special, expensive and bespoke. The Mercedes is a luxury car that will slip into your life seamlessly; the 7 Series is one that is distinctive enough to enjoy."

Very solid reviews for the G70. Can’t remember whether the G11 were any close to this, but I doubt it.

That's right, from what I remember, the G11 lost in all the head-to-head matches vs the S-Class and vs the A8 separately and also when they compared the three together, the LCI improved it, but it continued to lose each and every one of the comparisons, disappointing, I do not doubt that it was a great car, but the others were simply better, great merit of the G70 in turning it around.

I have seen quite a few new 740i models and with the iconic glow grill. It does look massive in real life, but the front styling is really an eyesore, the grill is too massive and the bonnet line too high. From the back the 7 series looks good, but not recognizably BMW, without the L shaped rear lights the new BMWs are losing their identity.

elegance and gravitas.
Equal: cars for old people
I have no official information on this, but the appearance of all the models, copy paste from Mercedes based on the S downwards, makes them look like they are for a higher and more restricted consumer age than the BMW age spectrum, which gives the impression of being much broader, the faces of those who drive them too, this would explain the drop in sales that they are having in all their main lines

The average age of the S-class owner in China, which is Mercedes biggest market is 40years old and 10% are first time buyers.

While for the BMW 7-series its 38 years old which is no different.

So I wouldnt consider them both been purchased by old people.

Front of the S class is too low in the side profile pic and not in proportion with the rest of the car, IMO
Looks like a C class front on an S class.

The 7 embodies vulgarity emphasised by its size.

Tell me with dry eyes you see a difference in size in the above picture. I sure don't, you have got to know which one is bigger.

There is a big difference in real life, the 7-series is at least 5cm or more higher at the front, greenhouse and boot. The S-class parked next the 7 series looks a smaller car, a class lower in fact in size it's that much difference. Width and length wise they not far off but the height difference especially the bonnet and front lights makes the 7 look a bigger car.

This is the most perfect design in its class. Who cares if 7 is bigger?

I was referring more to what happens from the S-Class downwards, since the E and the C look so similar to the S, they maintain that impression of being for older people, the 38 and 40 years old does not seem much in the figure but it is a large market

In terms of size it is indeed a class above the S.
It's virtually the same size as the R-R Ghost.
