Hard to choose between the two, but the SLR will always be special in my heart.

Nice to see the two together! The SLR does seem a little more sleeker.

I comply.

Only the Veyron have been able to replicate the usability of the SLR

veyron has "usability" ? you're kiding right ? except the interior which I agree is more "usable" than most hypercars out there, that car is completely unusable for anything else than short-distance cruises. just take a look at fuel consumption, ground clearence, ride confort etc. that said, the veyron in by no means a GT car, like the SLR is. it's not even a proper sportscar, given it weights in excess of 2 tons (fluids and driver included). it's just a very fast (way too fast for the public roads) car, made purely for marketing reasons and bragging rights by the chaps at VW, and that's about it. Pig ugly too. And now there's a new version, that looks exactly like a potato :D

I think the SLS is one of the ugliest mercs in recent history. the back looks like a buick or hyundai the front is completely disproportional (as is the rest of the car) and the side looks like its a giant S2000. id rather have an SL65.

I think you guys havent seen the SLR upclose enough to realize just how wide, sleek and low slung it is. in the autoshow the SLR made the SL65BS next to it look like absolutely nothing even though in pics the SL65BS looks more aggressive.

as for performance, the SLS has 560 and 480 ft-lbs hp right? im willing to bet money in a straight line its gonna get trumped by the SLR with its 620 hp and 575 ft-lbs. and looking at the price, the msrp of the SLR is way higher, I would imagine mercedes benz's vision of it was higher than that of the SLS.

While I agree with you that the SLS is kind of ugly and disproportioned, and that the SLR looks waaay better from any angle, i think you are wrong on the performance side. The SLS is, according to most reviews, a far better sportscar than the SLR. It has a considerably lower weight (100 kg or so), better handling, steering, a much more engaging and responsive engine (even though it produces less hp), a purpose-built dual-clutch trans (as opossed to the 5-speed auto in the SLR) and it's almost as fast in a straight line (which is good enough since it costs twice as less). Confortwise, I don't think there is much of a difference, perhaps the SLR rides more softly but that's it.

"the SLS has 560 and 480 ft-lbs hp right? im willing to bet money in a straight line its gonna get trumped by the SLR with its 620 hp and 575 ft-lbs"- I don't think so, because the SLS compensates the lack of power with the reduced weight and superfast transmission. And if youtube videos are of any indication, it is plenty fast enough. Hell, it can even keep up with the new Lambo Gallardo, which in turn is on par with the murcielago LP640 !

Not to mention it trounces the audi R8 V10:

You put it perfectly right, a potato -- a comfortbly couch potato that happens to be very fast. Like some of us here have described it int he past, the Veyron is an Uber GT. Usability is much greater than other hyper cars. With the exception of the SLR, the Veyron is overwhelmingly the most used hyper car money can buy. Owners don't seem concerned about clocking milage on it and the daily-driverness is very high. Some reviewers have said the car is easy to drive as a Golf.

VAG used the same recepie for the R8 which is very popular as primary car. A guy in my area owns one, and every morning it leaves the drive on duty for a commute to and from work. I've even seen R8s at my local supermarkets. Haters, love to loathe the SLR and Veyron for their weight and bulk, but there is no denying that owners are very content with how both of them behave on regular roads in the hands of regular people, as oppossed to on specialist tracks wheeled by test drivers.

Well, that depends on your definition of a GT :D

"A grand tourer (Italian: gran turismo) (GT) is a high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving."

The question is, was the veyron designed for long distance cruising ? I don't think so. With the worst fuel consumption of any supercar ever, an ultra-low ground clearence, poor outside visibility, and no luggage space whatsoever, you can hardly call this a long distance cruiser. A ferrari 599 is a long distance cruiser, a mercedes SLR is a long-distance cruiser, a aston DB9 is a long distance cruiser. The veyron is simply NOT suitable for this kind of endeavour. Except the plush cabin, it lacks pretty much ALL the ingredients of a super GT. So in the end, it's not a sport car, nor a GT. It's just a mega fast, awfully impractical car.

You say it's more practical or suitable for daily use than other hypercars (enzo, carrera gt), and it probably is. but those cars were not designed to be practical, and no hypercar is. they're designed to be extremely fast and also extremely fun/involving to drive, especially on a track (but not only there). the veyron may be faster in a straight line, but on a track is nowehere near as fast as those cars, and nowwhere near as engaging to drive. And the last part translates outside the track too, because like you said, driving a veyron is like driving a 1000 bhp Golf. And since on the public roads you can't really make use of those 1000 hp, and go any faster than the other hyper-cars, i ask: what's the point of this car ??

Sorry SLS, although I'm crazy about you I will have to go with the SLR!! I just think that it's the most beautiful car ever made(specifically the 722). It's just outrageous!

And I agree with Sayyaf, the SLR is still keeping its value here in the UAE, and its' presence on the road is unmatched by any other car, even the Veyron. When an SLR passes by it just grasps all my emotions :D not to mention driving it.. that's another story!

I prefer the SLR, anyday. More exotic, aggressive look.

The SLS is ok, but they really screwed up the back.

Both are great cars, but I think the SLR is definitely more original with styling and more.

Keep in mind the SLS has the similar 6.3 as the other AMGs. It is more of a regular AMG car. The SLR is so much more unique, don't forget it has a carbon fiber body and its own engine.

Think of it this way, if you were worth hundreds of millions, drove an S600 and SL63 everyday and then had three car garage filled with the most special cars from your three favorite marks (Mercedes, Porsche and Ferrari), you would have an Enzo, Carrera GT, and what would you have in the last bay, SLS or SLR? Me, SLR.

I still love the SLS, (I love all Mercs) but I think I would prefer the SLR.

thanks for reviving this thread. Its interesting to have seen my own opinion a while back and even more interesting to see I have not changed my mind, especially after seeing the SLS at the autoshow and a couple on the road. so I would like to renew and date-stamp my declaration :D

SLS all the way for me.

SLR is kinda fugly. I'm not big on the crazy/exotic designs though, tire of them quickly (SLR grew tiresome very fast). SLS seems to draw a better balance.

The SLR shared it's 5.5L supercharged V8 with every other AMG Mercedes of the time just like the SLS AMG shares it's 6.2L V8 with everything else. Both the SLS and SLR just used a stronger version of their respective, shared engines. If anything the SLS' engine is more unique version of its donor engine than the SLR's was.

M

Yeah, the SLS' engine is much more unique than thne SLR's, having vastly more extensive mods than just a beefed-up compressor and intercooler. And it has a unique gearbox, not an antique 5-speeder slush... And it has no A-Class steering-rack...

In terms of engineering, there is no contest: the SLS is much more mature, much more developped. A better car, bot for the track and for the road.

But this is just a beauty contest here, so this is all inconsequent.

In terms of look, I prefer the SLS, by far. But the SLR is more spectacular, more in-your-face, more exotic, more hypercar in its design, that's for sure.

Both can look pretty gawky from certain angles but the SLR has aged so fast thanks to those ugly headlamps... just look at any 996...

1. SLR Stirling Moss
2. SLS
3. SLR

Tough decision but SLS takes the win, the rear is much nicer in the SLR though IMO.
