BTW I want to fast forward couple of years and come back to this thread .. and see the same people re vote. I believe the results would be surprizing. I think the SLR is much more timeless than the SLS. SLS is just too trendy.

I've always thought of the ME market is very similar to the US market. People here are crazy about the SLR that you could buy one brand new, drive it for 40K miles (thats alot for a supercar) and re sell it with almost the same sticker price (almost) .. People here hated the raw super cars like Scuderia and Gt3s .. its too raw for their taste and they wanted a comfortable everyday super car .. and in their argument only the SLR delivered such experience. All those semi autos or automated manuals are too harsh for them to use everyday.

So SLR is still no.1 supercar over here in UAE. It was pimped to death just to be distinctive enough from stock ones but that is another story.

sure you'll see Ferraris/Lambos/Porsche and some other exotics but those are just flashy or trendy and sooner or will later will be replaced by a newer supercar. Most of those people still keep their SLRs for everyday use.

I comply.

Only the Veyron have been able to replicate the usability of the SLR. In the recent 8 weeks I have seen 6 out of the 300 Veyron VAG has planned to produce. In the same time period I have only seen 1 out of 1,200(?) Carrera GTs and only 1 out of 700(?) Enozs.

I don't think the Carrera GT or the Enzo were ever designed to be used everyday. :t-cheers:

I think the SLS is one of the ugliest mercs in recent history. the back looks like a buick or hyundai the front is completely disproportional (as is the rest of the car) and the side looks like its a giant S2000. id rather have an SL65.

I think you guys havent seen the SLR upclose enough to realize just how wide, sleek and low slung it is. in the autoshow the SLR made the SL65BS next to it look like absolutely nothing even though in pics the SL65BS looks more aggressive.

as for performance, the SLS has 560 and 480 ft-lbs hp right? im willing to bet money in a straight line its gonna get trumped by the SLR with its 620 hp and 575 ft-lbs. and looking at the price, the msrp of the SLR is way higher, I would imagine mercedes benz's vision of it was higher than that of the SLS.

The SLS is a modern interpretation of an old classic. Given that the Gullwing is very close to people's hearts and is perceived to be one of the most beautiful cars ever made, any successor possessing similar design cues will by default receive praise from the public. However, there is a great danger with reviving an old classic because the successor will evidently be compared with the original car -- the new Mclaren is great example. Despite that, Mercedes have done an admirable job moulding an old design into a modern lust-worthy object.

I think your point regarding making a new version of à classic is valid. However, the risk is more real when the two models are close to eachother in time, i.e., the E63 will be more compared to the E55 than will the SLS be to the original Gullwing. The latter comparison will, for the most times, only relate to design...

That true, they are decades apart but let's see whether MB will issue press photos with both of them side by side.

I voted for the SLS. But make no mistake the SLR was light years ahead of it's time and a masterpiece of engineering, those exhuast pipes at the back of each front wheel, the 'gills' the sound - Messerschmidt Figter plane...well it was build by the Brits...so maybe Spitfire....

I see each one as an icon on their own...2x greatest cars of their respective time!:t-cheers:

Going forward....Hallo! SLS:usa7uh:

I was never a bigt fan of the very high rear of the SLR. However; the rest of it is absolutely gorgeous, even Italian in its verve and passion.

However, the SLS is less show, more go, and its design simplicity is more my taste than the SLR's exuberance.

So, SLS for me, it's more like a MB sportcar should be imo. Less linked to a design theme used by regular MBs (thus less likely to become outdated when it changes), better interior, less fascinating but better thought-out and more refined design language.

The interior is also vastly superior.

This is not to say that I don't love the SLR's design, just than the SLS is really fantastic to my eyes.

Forget the SLR, it was overpriced and underperformed. Design wise it was ok, but with lots crude details. The SLS is the complete opposite, *promises* better performance, better pricing, better interior if not as wild to look at.

SLS is the awkward one design wise. The side profile and back aren't pretty, and they sacrifised so much for those two stupid doors...The flat 2 meter wide roof looks silly.

I've always found the design of the SLR awkward. The SLS is much better executed designwise.

IYO that is. SLR wasn't a design masterpiece either, too much going on. The SLS is how Mercedes design should be, clean and flowing, uncluttered.

Don't hate.

Honestly, the SLS and SLR both look absolutely glorious. The SLR was very busy and had such a dramatic appearance like most exotics usually have. It was one of the best looking Mercedes-Benz that I have ever seen. Everything from the bold lines, the sharp front and an extreme rear to finish it off, made it a work of art.

The SLS is ridiculously spectacular. I love it! It has a retro look, but has the essence of Mercedes-Benz poured all over it. IMO everything was done right on this car. It is absolutely flawless in all respects.

It has everything it needs to make it a legend.

When it comes between the two, it is a hard decision. Both are award winners in my book when it comes to design. For now I will saw the SLR because everytime I see that car it's like someone told me I won the lottery.

It was Mercedes-Benz to the extreme. Now in no way am I saying the SLS is less of a car then the SLR, but on looks for "now" the SLR has my vote. Still love the SLS as well though.

In a way the SLS is probably more of a familiar MB design then the SLR. The SLR was just so exotic look for a Mercedes-Benz.
