I absolutely adore the SLS, so I have to go with that.
I've always thought of the ME market is very similar to the US market. People here are crazy about the SLR that you could buy one brand new, drive it for 40K miles (thats alot for a supercar) and re sell it with almost the same sticker price (almost) .. People here hated the raw super cars like Scuderia and Gt3s .. its too raw for their taste and they wanted a comfortable everyday super car .. and in their argument only the SLR delivered such experience. All those semi autos or automated manuals are too harsh for them to use everyday.
So SLR is still no.1 supercar over here in UAE. It was pimped to death just to be distinctive enough from stock ones but that is another story.
sure you'll see Ferraris/Lambos/Porsche and some other exotics but those are just flashy or trendy and sooner or will later will be replaced by a newer supercar. Most of those people still keep their SLRs for everyday use.
I comply.
Only the Veyron have been able to replicate the usability of the SLR. In the recent 8 weeks I have seen 6 out of the 300 Veyron VAG has planned to produce. In the same time period I have only seen 1 out of 1,200(?) Carrera GTs and only 1 out of 700(?) Enozs.

I don't think the Carrera GT or the Enzo were ever designed to be used everyday.![]()
The SLS is a modern interpretation of an old classic. Given that the Gullwing is very close to people's hearts and is perceived to be one of the most beautiful cars ever made, any successor possessing similar design cues will by default receive praise from the public. However, there is a great danger with reviving an old classic because the successor will evidently be compared with the original car -- the new Mclaren is great example. Despite that, Mercedes have done an admirable job moulding an old design into a modern lust-worthy object.
No they weren't but the SLR was, which is why I find it to be purposeful in its own way.
I think your point regarding making a new version of à classic is valid. However, the risk is more real when the two models are close to eachother in time, i.e., the E63 will be more compared to the E55 than will the SLS be to the original Gullwing. The latter comparison will, for the most times, only relate to design...

Forget the SLR, it was overpriced and underperformed. Design wise it was ok, but with lots crude details. The SLS is the complete opposite, *promises* better performance, better pricing, better interior if not as wild to look at.
M
SLS is the awkward one design wise. The side profile and back aren't pretty, and they sacrifised so much for those two stupid doors...The flat 2 meter wide roof looks silly.
I was never a bigt fan of the very high rear of the SLR. However; the rest of it is absolutely gorgeous, even Italian in its verve and passion.
However, the SLS is less show, more go, and its design simplicity is more my taste than the SLR's exuberance.
So, SLS for me, it's more like a MB sportcar should be imo. Less linked to a design theme used by regular MBs (thus less likely to become outdated when it changes), better interior, less fascinating but better thought-out and more refined design language.
The interior is also vastly superior.
This is not to say that I don't love the SLR's design, just than the SLS is really fantastic to my eyes.
S.L.- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!![]()
