Arghhh, a threesome of a GL, an X5 and a 2er active tourer. It's like Hugh Jackman getting it on with Jason Statham and ......... Rosie O'Donnell.

This cars rear end looks dreadful, actually trying to copy the GL a little, while the front grill and lights look huge!! Not a good design BMW please don't bring it out looking like this!!! I am not a big fan of these HUGE SUV's anyway, too heavy, too huge to park, too heavy on fuel and not as luxuries as an S-Class which will probably cost the same. Will one of their owners actually take this car offroad or only use it to park on the sidewalks or pavements?

I am currently on assignment.

But this render? It is not the shape of things to come.

The important thing about the X7 is that this not a GL rival which is actually just an extended ML.

Think of X7 as more of a 7er SAV. Its long wheelbase allows designers to offer dynamic outlines and overhangs , especially at the rear of the car. It is less upright and more dynamic with the roof sloping downwards to the cargo area familiar of the first generation X5.

Future BMWs will use that technical high tech look illustrated by the VFL concept to reflect the technical superiority it has within its genes but retain organic surfaces that progress from today’s BMWs such as three dimensional character lines etc. this is important because this element can bring broadness to the wheel arches as when looked on behind. There will be no slashes across the body for the simple ability to provide closure to a blank space every line must form a purpose for it to be present, sculpture must connect to highlight the appearance.

Gee, thanks for that image. Where do you live so I can send you the bill for my psychotherapy?

I'm sorry I was overreacting. The most disturbing thing may be that I'm actually a psychologist (even though I haven't worked in the clinical field for many years). So, sorry again and if Rosie and the guys keep haunting you, just think of a pink 5er GT. In case this doesn't help I'm gladly making you a contact ;)

Bahahahaha, I see you are new here. You'll fit right in with this wacky bunch.

I guess I should say something bout the X7 since this is what this thread is about, right? So is this off-road ability on par with an X5 or is it going to be a jacked-up 7er shooting brake type thing? I asked this because base on SCOTT's recentpost, I feel it's going to be the latter.

So does this mean the X7 is based on the new 7-Series instead of the X5/X6?

Will the X7 get a X5+ interior or a VFL-inspired one a'la the new 7er?

It will not be an X5 + so why would it get an X5 interior? The car is going to be based on the next 7er, is going to get the 'G' codename, and will feature the next gen design language inside out.

Auto Bild have re-done their X7 Render. As its early the details are the subject of the BMW rendering contagion a rare form of "Granlussoitis" . The outline is interesting, the details are not. Expect more renders until they finally get it right.

This render doesnt't look like a SAV. It merely looks like Allroad/RXH.

@ Scott reminds me of a current X1 mostly

I like the hood shut line of the red render above.
The red render has more "stance", but still not enough IMO. Don't like the thape of the C-pillar/roofline (as I don't like this on the 2er AT and MB-C-Estate).

BMW defends plan to build X7 SUV

After years of promoting the image of EfficientDynamics, BMW has recently announced their plants to build a large SUV, a side step from the “green …

After years of promoting the image of EfficientDynamics, BMW has recently announced their plants to build a large SUV, a side step from the “green message” promoted by the brand. The BMW X7 is scheduled to arrive in 2017 and will be built at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

BMW first considered building an X7 before the 2008 economic crisis but abandoned that idea to focus on smaller crossover vehicles that consume less fuel and the BMW i sub-brand.

The general strategy for many carmakers over the last few years was to move away from large vehicles which, despite the latest efficiency developments, are difficult to be “greenified”.

But like rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz, BMW is unwilling to take this track because its customers still demand high-performance sedans and SUVs.

“The X7 is a perfect reflection of the premium carmaker’s dilemma,” says Arndt Ellinghorst, head of automotive research at ISI Group. “On the one hand they need to launch more environment-friendly cars, on the other they have to make money to be able to afford to do so.”

BMW steps in to defend their upcoming large SUV. BMW said its decision to build the X7 is “thoroughly in accordance with the subject of sustainability . . . With large vehicles and SUVs there is often the blanket assumption that these have a very high [fuel] consumption. Our SUVs are efficient.”

Norbert Reithofer, BMW CEO, said there is no contradiction between the company’s green goals and its SUV line-up, including the X6 which weighs more than two tonnes and emits 236g carbon dioxide per km (petrol version).

“Customers worldwide have very different needs, and in the US, in particular, customers have always asked for a model above the X5. We are now responding to those wishes,” he told investors in May.

The X7 is also partly a response to its competitor Mercedes-Benz, which already has the GL, a seven-seat, 2,455kg, 5.1 meter SUV in its line-up. Audi has also given the go-ahead for a range-topping Q8 SUV to complement its chunky Q7.
