M5 BMW M5 (F90) - Spy Pics & Info

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

Better than F10,worse than E39 and E60,underwhelming.

Oh yes ! The E60 M5 was very special indeed. So "The Business". And the Hartge aftermarket rims pictured below suited the car like a charm.

Back in "their day", I was inclined to think: "M-B E55 AMG and RS6 WHO ??"

This is a pretty good attempt at haiku.

1. Citröen DS 2. Lada Niva 3. Saab 93 (or early 96) 4. Isuzu Impulse 5. Ferrari F40 6. Geo Metro 7. Volkswagen Scirocco 8. Lotus Elan 9. Volvo P1800 (not technically Italian body, ok) 10. Peugeot 504 11. Chevy Bel Air 12. Cadillac Eldorado

No, not mine. Some utterly crappy cars in here. I wouldn't have guesse3d a single one to be honest.

How are you guys expecting this to be as special as the E60 M5? That car had its mighty new V10 derived from the BMW presence in the F1. This car has the same engine than the car it replaces. And it most likely the last M5 to feature a V8.

Different times, different approaches. Expectations should as well be different.

We're obviously just discussing the looks. The looks of the E60 M5 were special. The performance of the E60 M5 will be utter shit compared to the upcoming M5. Never mind the V10 (which has nothing whatsoever to do with F1 BTW)

the sad thing now is that the E60 is becoming "accessible" and that they are being destroyed by the aftermarket. Similar to the E46 and E92 M3.

...got 1,2,3,7 and 10. I was clueless on the rest.

I don't think anybody was expecting the F90 M5 to be anything other than what we're seeing now. And just because people don't expect anything as special as the E60 M5, it doesn't absolve the latest M5 from a solid critique.

Yes, no doubt. A solid critique es is valid as a solid praise. I simply don't think the E60 M5 is a good reference to compare this car with. If someone says this car is underwhelming, fine, but saying it is because it is not as special as the E60 when it debuted...

I was expecting the exterior to be much worse tbh, and I like what I see here. In terms of performance it is difficult to say until the first reviews start to hit the web.

So far the exterior lacks a bit of drama, unlike the interior. Maybe in a lighter colour lines will pop up better.

Put me on the underwhelmed list when it comes to the car's looks. I think its partly because of the release being sooooo drawed out and that we all had a decent idea what to expect. In terms of appearance, it's funny, for both the E and 5er, I prefer the AMG Sport and M Sport over their full-blown AMG and ///M versions. Maybe I'll change my mind one or the other once we see more pics, IRL pics, and the car in different color (<-- generic statement).

Based on past prototype reviews, the M5 sounds extremely formidable.

I may be an anomaly here, but I for one think that the E60 was an aesthetically horrendous car. The E60 M5 did improve the looks of the base E60 5 but neither was very attractive imo. I would take a F10 and from what I have seen so far F90 anyday over the E60.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
