X7 BMW X7: Spy Pics & Info

The BMW X7 is a full-size luxury crossover sport utility vehicle manufactured by BMW. It is BMW's largest and second most expensive SUV in its line-up. The X7 was first announced by BMW in March 2014. It was officially unveiled on October 17, 2018, with pre-orders being taken online. The X7 has been available at dealers since March 2019.

For me, it just needs to not be ugly. The X line-up is not a pretty one to my eyes.

I agree, however, I must say the X5 M looks quite nice, especially in Long Beach Blue and Donington Grey. Better looking than the GLE.

BMW just gave us a tease of the upcoming X7 SUV, which will be BMW’s flagship SUV once it makes its debut. The X7 will slot above the X5 and X6, competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class and Range Rover. It’s a wise decision for BMW to get into that segment and it’s actually a surprise that it took this long.

The full-sized luxury SUV segment simply dominates the luxury market, at least in America. Range Rovers, big Benzes and Cadillac Escalades are some of the most popular luxury vehicles in America, so it only makes sense that BMW would want in on some of the action. It was only a matter of time and we’re wondering what took BMW so long.

BMW X7 Teaser

But with a new X7 coming to BMW’s lineup, being that it’s an entirely new model in a segment that BMW has yet to compete in, what do you want to see from the BMW X7?

It’s likely that the BMW X7 has the Range Rover squarely in its sights, so look for extreme levels of luxury, equivalent to the BMW 7 Series. The X7 could have all of the same luxury and technology as the 7 Series and maybe even more. The X7 has the opportunity to be even more luxurious, thanks to its added size and interior room. There’s even a possibility of an extra luxurious model, akin to the BMW M760Li V12 Excellence, to compete with the Range Rover Autobiography.

But hopefully, the BMW X7 won’t just be a bigger fancier BMW X5 and is something completely different, maybe even with some genuine off-road tech. One of the Range Rover’s biggest upsides is that it can off-road with some of the best SUVs in the world, despite being incredibly luxurious on the inside. So it’s a great blend of both worlds. It would be nice if BMW could give the X7 some better off-road capability, possibly a locking differential, so it can be that fantastic all-rounder. That’s doubtful, though.

In terms of powertrains, the 3.0 twin-turbo I6 from the 740i is likely to be the standard engine with the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 from the 750i being the top-end engine, much like the 7 Series. A plug-in hybrid variant is probable and maybe even a variant with the 6.6 liter twin-turbo V12 from the M760Li is possible. But don’t expect to see a 2.0 liter diesel in the X7, it’s going to marketed far too high for something like that.

We’re very excited to see what the BMW X7 will become and have very high expectations for it. The current crop of BMW SUVs are very impressive and we don’t expect anything different from the X7. Hopefully, it has some more off-road capability than the other SUVs its related to, so it can compete at least loosely with the Range Rover, and hopefully there are some big engine options, like the V12. We’d also like to see even higher levels of luxury than the 7 Series has, with some more impressive tech. Those are the things we’re looking for in the X7, what do you want to see from it?

It makes better strategic sense to launch the new interior design direction with this car, instead of the next 3er..

BMW's X7 Will Also Have a Four-Seat Luxury Version

BMW first confirmed the X7 two years ago, when it said the new seven-seat SUV would be made in Spartanburg, USA.

The company did not mention this model too much in previous years, as it focused on launching and promoting other products. However, the X7’s launch date is closing in, and BMW executives have started talking about this car again.

Naturally, the development department was still working on the X7 the entire time, and the car is probably finished by now, but there has not been a concept presentation to preview the X7 until now.

We used a picture of the current X5 xDrive40e to illustrate this story, as the German company has not shown any recent sketches of the car, not to mention a concept car. The spyshots of X7 prototypes are not conclusive either, as the car is hidden under various other BMW bodies to conceal its design.

In an interview with Automotive News, BMW brand sales chief Ian Robertson stated that the new X7 will be sold in two versions. One of them will be the already announced seven-seat X7, while the second variant will be an ultra-luxury four-seat model.

The latter will cost over $100,000, and will have a “distinct look,” the sales boss of BMW explained. However, the ultra-luxury X7 will not surpass the $200,000 mark, and it will only represent one percent of X7 sales for the lifetime of the model.

While BMW’s flagship sedan, the 7 Series, shares its platform with a Rolls-Royce model, the upcoming X7 will not do the same with the next Rolls-Rolls SUV. The latter will be built on an aluminum space-frame, while BMW will go for a monocoque solution.

The ultra-luxury X7 is just a small part of BMW’s plans when it comes to “Grand Klasse” models. These vehicles will be BMW’s equivalent to the Maybach range of their arch-enemy, Mercedes-Benz. The latter is also working on a luxury SUV based on the GL, so the two German companies will battle it out on all available segments.

The only segment in which BMW shares no interest with Mercedes-Benz is the pick-up truck category, in which the latter has already confirmed a new product, while BMW stated it is not planning such a vehicle.

Let us remind you that BMW used to say that they would not make front-wheel drive cars or diesel M cars, so there is still a small possibility that they might call their partners at Toyota to share the Hilux platform and provide an answer to the next Mercedes-Benz pick-up truck. This assumption is only valid if the luxury pick-up truck segment that Mercedes-Benz dreams of proves to be a lucrative niche.

BMW has ultraluxe $100K X7 in works
It will be 1 of 2 variants of new crossover line
NEW YORK -- BMW will sell two versions of its new X7 crossover -- the already-announced seven-seater and a $100,000-plus four-seater with a distinct look, said brand sales boss Ian Robertson.

BMW will also launch another small crossover that will be big enough to sell in the United States, he said.

The uberluxurious X7 is part of BMW's plans to expand what it calls its GKL models (short forGrand Klasse in German), which include the newly redesigned 7-series sedan.

Both X7s' styling will differ from the X5, currently BMW's largest crossover, Robertson said. The X7s will go on sale in 2018 and be built in BMW's factory in Spartanburg, S.C.

Robertson wouldn't say whether this range-topping X7 is BMW's answer to the anticipated Maybach version of the Mercedes-Benz GL SUV. Mercedes-Benz insiders said the vehicle is likely to be a second model for the Maybach subbrand, but haven't revealed details or a launch date.

Robertson noted: "Of course the quintessential luxury is still the [BMW-owned] Rolls-Royce -- we do not need a Maybach."

The luxurious X7 won't share any components with the Rolls-Royce crossover due in 2018. The Rolls-Royce, referred to by insiders as the Cullinan, will use an aluminum spaceframe construction while both X7s will be monocoque, Robertson said.

BMW will also add more GKL models, Robertson said, declining to confirm the rumored 9 series. But another model "is well under way, we will see it in the not too distant future. This is not something we dreamt up last week," Robertson said.

At the opposite end of the market, BMW will launch an all-new compact crossover, Robertson said. He wouldn't confirm the model but said there have been spy photos.

That vehicle is expected to be the X2, a coupe version of the X1. The X2 will have styling similar to that of the larger X4 and X6. It is expected next year.

BMW of North America is especially eager to get new crossovers, said the region's CEO, Ludwig Willisch. This year, crossovers will account for 40 percent of BMW's total U.S. sales, up from 30 percent last year -- and even that isn't enough to satisfy the seemingly insatiable demand for these vehicles, Willisch said.

Meanwhile, BMW sees "a slowing of sedan sales," he said. Some competitors are on the way to having 60 to 70 percent of U.S. sales be crossovers, Willisch said, "which is an even stronger message."

Willisch said the superluxurious X7 model would be a niche vehicle, cost more than $100,000 and represent about 1 percent of X7 sales. "It would not be in the $200,000-plus range," like some of the new entries, he said.

BMW X7 Will Be Welcome around the World, Not Just the US

The upcoming BMW X7 sparks a lot of discussions both online and offline. Announced for the first time by the BMW USA boss Ludwig Willisch, the car is now well into the development phase and will arrive in 2018. Competing against the likes of the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover and Mercedes GL, the X7 was initially conceived as a US-specific model. However, recent research shows that the demand might be good on a global scale.

In Europe, the tiny, narrow and old roads of ancient cities that are now capitals of some of the most developed countries in the world, might be a bit ‘too much’ for the bigger SUV. In Germany that might not be a problem but in cities like Rome, London and Paris, the X7 might be a bit too big to be considered comfortable to drive.

A surprisingly warm welcome is, however, coming from Australia. Speaking to Car Advice at a recent event, BMW Australia CEO, Mark Werner said that their research shows there’s quite a potential for the car in the land down under. One of the main reasons behind this drive might actually be the X7’s smaller brother, the X5.

“The take-up rate of the third row option on the X5 is considerably low. Certainly from our market research, it very clearly tells us that there is room for an even bigger SUV in our product line-up, and that the feedback we receive from our customers is that they want more space,” said Werner.

The reason for that is that the third-row doesn’t offer a lot of space, as is the case of the X5’s bigger competitors, like the Mercedes-Benz GLS for example. That’s an issue that would be solved with the introduction of the X7.

Even so, the X7 won’t become the top selling Bavarian SUV overnight. The X5 will remain the bread and butter of sales, with the bigger alternative as an add-on. As for the launch date, expect the new SAV to come out somewhere in 2018, with an ultra-luxurious alternative coming later on.

I can attest to this. Before settling for an X3 I was considering an approved used 7 seater X5. To my surprise, only a small percentage of the cars for sale had a third row. Worst of all, a third row cannot be retrofitted.

BMW wants to rival the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Land Rover Range Rover, and the likes with a brand new X7 SUV, previewed unofficially by our colleagues at OmniAuto.

Recently it was revealed the Bavarian brand isalready working on the next generation X5, set to be based on the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) that also underpins the current 7 Series. The X5 (F15) is only three years old now and we are tempted to believe BMW is rushing with the development of the new X5 only to get ready for the flagship X7 as soon as possible.

Yes, the two vehicles will share many of its components and will sit at the top of the X range of the brand with the X7 taking the top spot. It will be the true pinnacle of the brand, as it is believed to be even more luxurious than the latest 7 Series.

At first, the X7 will be offered as a seven-seat SUV, but later during the model’s life cycle it will be joined by an ultra-luxurious variant that will feature four individual seats. Rear passengers will enjoy ventilation, heating, and massaging functions, while an advanced entertainment system will provide audio, navigation, and entertainment features.

As far as the engines are concerned, the X7 is expected to become the first X model to be offered with BMW’s biggest engine in the portfolio – the 6.6-liter V12 unit that is also available for the 7 Series. V8 and straight-six petrol and diesel engines sourced from the X5 are also planned.

The X7 was already confirmed for a market launch in 2019, when production will begin at BMW’s Spartanburg factory in South Carolina, the U.S. Customers will have to pay at least $145,000 for the entry-level version, which makes it significantly more expensive than the 7 Series which starts at $81,300.

Wondering what the engine choices will be... Guessing pretty much in line with the current G11/G12?

Are they mental? $145K for the entry level model is plain nuts, you could get one hell of a Range Rover for that.

I don't believe that figure is truth. It would price the car out if the market. BMW is a volume manufacturer not a niche brand trying to prove a point.

It's just a typically speculative article/clickbait, which doesn't really tell you anything new, and is just rehashed nonsense in order to generate advertising revenue.

@nikola1984 has a tendency to trawl the internet and then post every piece of crap he finds, here, like a proud cat leaving a dead bird on their owner's doorstep.

No, worst of all is the last minute call to make the X5 a 7 seater. Pretty much ruins the whole car imo, with that ugly messed up D pillar.
