The GLS's tail lights look like an exquisite rendition of the the Maybach's units..

... in that they look like shit. The GLS tail lamps are a stroke sufferer in anaphylactic shock.
The GLS tail lights look nothing like the Maybach units on the current S-class version or the cars from the early 2000's, so dont know what you onto here mate

Skip to mark 5:22 seems like the X7 will do pretty well in China :ROFLMAO:

Not sure how such an inofensive design as the GLS tail lights can look like sheet. I could see such an adjetive being applied to the A-Class sedan rear lights, CLA, CLS... But these ones?

Plain vanilla IMO...

MB can never get their tail light right, lets hope the mighty S class won’t get a variation of these lights.

I may have skimped on the descriptive elements of my post. I simply meant that what they both share is how terrible I think they look. The GLS tail-lamps, and the back end of the MMVULC both look really, really, bad. In that respect the GLS follows the Maybach.

The rear light graphic of the GLS is a bit more modern and techy compared to the X7 IMO. (X7 from the rear looks like any other BMW) In AMG sport package it has grown on me a little. I believe this is one of those Benzes that has to be seen in the metal to appreciate what it has to offer.

I have the opposite opinion. The glowing attributes you associate with the GLS' rear is what I would relate to the X7's. But I do agree that the X7's are distinctly BMW, with or without the emblem. If you take the 3-point star off the GLS' rear, I'd be hard-pressed to called it a Benz. I get Grand Cherokee/Highlander vibes with that rear.

Wouldn't agree with that...I'm a big fan of the mainstream sedans' rear lights...distinctive and unfussy. With the stardust effect, they are quite fetching. I still quite like the W140's and W220's rear lights. The W221's had an interesting concept of incorporating the body-colored strips, but in execution, they faltered. I don't see to many W221's on the road these days, but looking at either the pre-F/L or F/L rear ends, it certainly has not aged well. And those pontoons didn't help either, but I digress.

But I do agree that the X7's are distinctly BMW, with or without the emblem.

I agree with this as well. The X7 excels at this where the X5 slips. As for the Mercedes, they change their theme with every generation so I can't fault the GLS specifically in that regard. By the time the S-class rolls out I'm sure people will be saying they're so annoyed that Mercedes uses the same theme on almost all their models. I guess at that point the GLS will be looking very Mercedes indeed.

A lot of people seem to prefer the X7.

If I were to have one of those, it would be undrivable in about 75% of the city I live. Also, the closest to my office I would find public parking space for it would be my home garage, in which I doubt it would fit.

I’d go even further and say this kind of car is undrivable in 75% of Europe. Picture one of these in one of those lovely “ Villages” in the Provence... during holiday season

I believe it. I once had to drive 5 coworkers in a Mercede Vito around a few towns in Belgium. Never. Again.

I like to fancy myself has a good driver but piloting a large van in an unfamiliar country with tiny roads was not my comfort zone.

I barely take my S60 downtown. It's a nightmare. But the worst nightmare of them all was last summer, where I went to the island of Kythera with the S60. At some point I just gave up and rented a Suzuki Celerio.

Surprised the GLS is not too far behind in the poll. Wishing we had two polls though. In sport-pack I would pick the GLS/ in regular clothes, X7. the X7 sport pack looks too fussy for my personal taste.

Respect for both. GLS is less wagon-like from the rear. The tapered, slightly rounded rear window makes it look newer and slightly smaller, same for the rear light graphics. This one might stand the test of time better through the coming years.
(-dont see where it looks like sh*t here at all.)
