I am not making things up:

“Anyway, where the X7 genuinely does have the upper hand over the GLS is in its third row of seating. Whereas the BMW can genuinely fit seven reasonably sized adults in comfort, you’d struggle to fit anything larger than the average child in the very back of the Mercedes. Still, second-row space is impressively cavernous.”

Of course NOT.

The reason his comments about how good the new iDrive is piss me off so much is that not only is there no evidence that he has ACTUAL experience of the new iDrive (nevermind the old iDrive), but that it's so far from the truth anyway. It's gone from the best UI of the big German three, to the worst.

On Sunday I found yet another fault with it. The journey computer was at zero when I started my 2 hour 52 minute trip to the Channel Tunnel, and the on-board computer said I'd been travelling for 2 hours 48 minutes! How can it be four minutes out? It's utter rubbish!

2019 BMW X7 vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class: Which Decadent Full-Size Luxury SUV Does It Better?

The Bottom Line

We're trying our best to resist the "you decide" cliché, but picking a winner in this case really depends on the buyer's priorities. The X7 drives slightly better when not in its default Comfort mode, it's quieter, has the more refined inline-six, and gets notably better fuel economy. However, if it's space you're looking for, the GLS dominates with larger second and third rows, and substantially more cargo space. But you pay for the Benz's accommodations with worse fuel economy, and you'll also pay more to get the same level of features. That the X7 is less expensive and better to drive while still offering loads of practicality heretofore unseen in the BMW lineup is enough to earn it our vote over the GLS in this initial matchup.

Hard to argue with that outcome. Also the space comment is more aligned with my own personal experience now that I've been in an X7.

Saw a GLS in person a couple days ago, specifically a GLS580. The design language is better suited on the GLE than the GLS, IMO. It looks characterless for a Benz, especially when compared to its predecessor.

It’s weird, I prefer the looks of the GLE (specifically AMG pack) over the X5, but prefer the X7 over the GLS, which as you alluded to looks like a giant bar of soap.

That being said, our X7 ownership experience had been less than stellar after half a year, with many nagging issues with powertrain, interior build, and Idrive/virtual cockpit software issues. We’ll likely go back another Range Rover very soon, which we miss.

One of my best friends just got a new 2020 RRS with the new I6 so I’ll get to see first hand now how reliable they are or aren’t.

Never thought I’d hear someone going to a Range Rover to avoid nagging issues. ;):p

I’ve had 3 Autobiography L405’s over a 5 year period and ownership experience for all were very positive. People who have RR’s in my region are in large faithful repeat buyers.

The Range Rover reliability stereotype is blown out of proportion nowadays.

I get it. The only thing that is getting my partner to give up his Range Rover is the fact that he now has a Audi RS6 wagon on order. I hope the resale is good because I think he’s going to get bored of the wagon within a year.

Bringing the diesel to the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover Vogue

The British is richer in appearance and touch. Light wooden trim adds coziness, while the dark wood in the “Germans” does not attract attention - as if there was none at all. The quality of the Range leather is also better, besides it covers almost the entire interior: plastic elements still need to be searched. Adds gloss to the new fittings that appeared after restyling ... The architecture of the BMW's front panel slightly facing the driver seems elaborate, and the leather upholstery is rougher.
But the assembly culture in South Carolina is still higher than in Alabama, where GLS is released: crooked seams connect material more reminiscent of leatherette. Do not add high cost and simple steering column switches, more or less appropriate unless in the A-class . Yes, and decorated with aluminum silver buttons to the touch are perceived plastic. Is this Mercedes exactly?
Well, it seems BMW market success is not accidental. Slightly losing capacity Mercedes, X7 surpasses it in driving disciplines. Perhaps a quieter and smoother “Bavarian” is better suited as a donor for a conditional Maybach than the GLS itself. Having lost in smoothness compared to its predecessor, Mercedes has not made much progress in other disciplines.
