Rumor: F97 BMW X3 M and F98 BMW X4 M scheduled for production

Our source in Munich says BMW is preparing two launch two model M SUV models in the future. The previously rumored BMW X3 M and X4 M are in the planning stages and will join the X5 M and X6 M high-performance SUVs. The X3 M carries the F97 internal designation while the F98 codename was assigned to the X4 M.

BMW X3 M

To compete with the Audi RS Q5 and Mercedes GLC 55 AMG, the X3 M is based on the next generation midsize SUV. The new X3 has grown in size and strives for a more powerful appearance. Compared to the current model, the 2017 X3 is expected but slim down almost 100 kilograms, thanks to a new rear-wheel drive platform and lightweight materials.

Sources say the front-end present itself flatter, yet beefier than the current model and with a new set of LED headlights. A character line runs from the front wheel arch on both door handles to the rear lights, which – are finally running used full LED technology.

The F97 X3 M will sport the typical M design, with an aggressive front fascia including a sculpted bumper and large air curtains, along with flared wheel arches and a lower stance.

The driving dynamics and exterior design have always been a selling point for the X3 family, but the interior somewhat lacked that premium feel many customers requested. BMW seems to have learned a lesson here and the new X3 is likely to be not only technologically advanced, but also more luxurious.

The true M variant would be powered by a 3.0 liter inline-six turbocharged engine delivering close to 500 horsepower. The G01 X3 will be introduced before the end of 2017 and it’s currently being tested in the Northern parts of Europe.

BMW X4 M

The F98 X4 M will be based on the current generation X4 and will sit above the recently unveiled – and fun to drive – BMW X4 M40i. Just like the X3 M, the M version of the X4 will sport a beefed-up design with aggressive lines and the usual M iconic design elements. Same powerplant is likely to end up under the hood with a similar 500 hp output. Both compact M SUVs will cater to a small niche of customers looking for practicality, performance and all-wheel drive experience in a compact Sports Utility Vehicle.

Reasonably would be the M3 engine with 430 hp.

It would be a variant of the M Six Cylinder, slightly more power over the standard M3 and M4.
But then you will have the Competition Pack, GTS and CSL for the M4 that they won't overshadow it.

It will be quite a bit heavier too I would imagine. The current top end X3 weighs 1900 kg, the next gen 3.5i (or what they will call it) around 100 kg less.

I don't believe the information from BMW Blog by your "opinion". These X3 M and X4 M will be in one lower step to M4. It's obvius.

By the time these arrive on the market around mid-late 2018.
The current M3 will be out of production more so the M3 to make way for the G20. Then the all new BMW M3 will be in development.
Therefore the next M3 and M4 will move to the next phase of engine development significantly offering more power and performance technology than the F80/F82.

Right, but if the current M3 F80 and M4 F82 develop 431 hp and current M4 F82 has 500 hp (I know is one limited model), I think the future generation from M3 and M4 will be close of 450 hp, of standars versions, these X3 M and X4 M cannot have more that futures M3 G20 and the M4.

Sorry by my english, I didn't know if I've explained and if you understand to me. I mean that these M SAVs cannot overcome the M3 and M4.

I think the M3 needs a power boost. 500 PS is the right figure. With 630 PS for the M5.

There was only 80 PS of difference between E90 and E60. Now it is 150 PS.

Come on BMW, step up the game here.

Thank you for consistently pointing out my mistakes as when I talk about M3 it is more or less a package deal to talk about the M4 in the same sentence which I overlooked in my original statement.

Well the X5M and X6M have a higher PS output than the standard M5 although rectified in the Competition Packet and Astounding 30 Jahre.
So it will be feasible in one way or the other.

I only wanted to say that I consider that M3 and M4 are the best of 3-Series and 4-Seris, and I think BMW are not going to overcome the hp in X3 M or X4 M. I know these cars are from the next generation, but in any case will have less that currents M3 and M4, no more.

SCOTT, I don't know if your last post went to the mine; in this case, if I've disturbed you, I apologize. I've only given my opinion.

Don't worry, it was aimed at me, which I find odd because he's supposed to be ignoring me.
