X3/X4 [Official] BMW X3 (G01)

The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 3 Series platform. Now in its fourth generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles. The BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured by BMW since 2014. The X4 is widely considered as a "coupé" version of the X3, trading its practicality with a sloping rear roof which offers a sportier styling. BMW has indicated 2025 will be the X4's final model year.
Black beauty.

Meet the all-new BMW X3 ///M40d. It's powered by a turbocharged 3L diesel inline 6 producing 240kW and 680Nm of torque. The German diesel beast sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

It looks stunning in that colour. Love the rims.

It’s the X3 M40i styling with a Diesel engine, would look even better in blue.
Imagine they would stick the X5 M50d engine in the X3......mmmmm....very very naughty. That would be a beast.

The guys that built the E60 M5 and Z3M coupe would fit one in there, but we live in a different world now.....with that said fitting 4 turbos into a Diesel engine is pretty crazy, there’s still crazy people at BMW. :D

Got an update from my car and it will be ready for collection at the end of June.

Other than that the X3 received an update for MY2020 with production starting in September.

-Live cockpit now part of Professional Media
-Acoustic Glass for front side windows now standard.
-Electrically folding mirrors now standard.
Non-runflat 19 and 20 inch tyres now an option.

M40i
-Gets the B58TU engine in the M340i with 385hp up from 355hp. This is a hardware and not just ECU upgrade.
-M seats now an option.

However pricing has changed. In the UK the starting price for the X3 has increased by £2,000 which is nearly 5%.

Adaptive M Suspension is now longer a sensible standalone £500 option. It's now part of the expensive £2,200 M Plus package.

My car would be £3,000 more expensive if I ordered it now instead of 2 months ago.

Is the 385hp upgrade for all markets or just the US? Looking at the Z4 M40i it might be for the US only.
Good point.

Booooo! However the B58 is easy to tune. A JB+ add 40-50hp for less than 600 euros or dollars. It can be installed or removed in 10min prior to taking the car in for service.

GLC vs X3 ...the LCI def looks softer than the car it replaces.

1st place with 556 out of 750 points: BMW X3 30d. The Bavarian lives from its outstanding engine-gearbox combination. But also has space and modern multimedia.

2nd place
with 548 out of 750 points: Mercedes GLC 300 d. The Swabian relies on high comfort. It is also spacious, and the MBUX system is just fun.

GLC vs X3

X3
For:
Strong balance of comfort, refinement, handling and performance, higher specification than GLC Sport
Against: Pricier than GLC, in-car technology isn’t quite as impressive as that in the latest BMWs

GLC
For: New engine much more refined, improved infotainment installation, practical
Against: Still not as good to drive as X3 but no more comfortable, interior quality could be stronger

Verdict
1st place:BMW X3

The X3 is a well balanced machine, even in entry-level SE trim. As with the GLC Sport it isn’t our pick of the range, but it’s comfortable, drives better than the Mercedes and has extra standard kit. There’s more available to improve the spec, too. Running costs will be similar.

2nd place: Mercedes Benz GLC

It's an incredibly close-run contest, but in basic Sport trim the GLC just loses out. Its more limited kit doesn’t help, and while it’s comfortable, it’s not as good to drive as the X3, which mixes both attributes better. Still, the engine and infotainment tweaks are welcome, and we’d recommend the GLC.

Whatever suppliers that BMW are using for their interiors are doing a stellar job, bravo!

Verdict

First place - BMW X3

The X3 retains its place at the top of the class. It’s the best car to drive but it’s also the most comfortable, which is its most important trait. Yet the X3 is also very practical and spacious, is just as well equipped and will be the most cost-effective company car. Economy is reasonable, too. To top it off, the infotainment is modern, full of clever features and easy to use, and the cabin is as upmarket as you could want.

Second place - XC60

As a previous class-leading car, the XC60 is still a superb choice. Its focus on comfort and refinement means it’s relaxing, if not quite as good to drive as the BMW. Despite a mild-hybrid boost, it’ll also be more expensive to run than the X3, but it’s luxurious and spacious inside, rides smoothly in most situations and is loaded with safety kit. We’d stick with a lower-spec version, because it’s the best value.

Third place -Discovery

The Discovery Sport finishes third, but it’s still a worthwhile choice – especially if you’ll occasionally need the versatility of seven seats. It’s the most practical car here and brings superb off-road ability, as well as a comfortable on-road app ride, a good level of kit and enough in-car tech (even if this isn’t as slick as the X3’s). But it falls behind because it’s more costly to run, slower and not as good to drive as its rivals here.

As so both of you should have - the X3 is the best car in its segment. There just isn't any other way to put it.

Quite an easy thing for BMW, the bar is set so low in this segment.
On the contrary - this segment is one of the most competitive and a great deal of effort is put into it by the respective manufacturers.
Volvo's XC60 is a gem of a car as long as you're not that fussed with driving dynamics (who is in this segment?) and has easily one of the best interiors in the class.
Mercedes' GLC is a classy product with good underpinnings and drivetrain.
Audi's Q5 is a well-resolved offering with good engines and a great user interface. Nicely made too, if only certain interior surfaces weren't hard, black plastic.
Alfa's Stelvio is a fully-fledged competitor only hampered by poor reputation and buyer aversion to unreliability.
Porsche's Macan remains the dynamic standard and is built beautifully - it's a bit small and dated though.
Lexus' NX is sharp, different and a Toyota underneath so it's a compelling product in its own right.
