Here is the guy who did the comparison. Boring voice, boring guy.

Autocar Videos - Autocar.co.uk

Autocar have complained a lot on bimmers lately, facelifted 3er didnt get much love either and they complained on the steering and said the steering is better on pre-facelifted E90 which I dont agree with.
In Autobild comparison they said 5er had better steering feel than the new E-class. People obviously have different views and taste. Which one you choose are a purely subjective decision.

Anyways,

Testresult: BMW vs MB
1 - 1
:D
(sorry Klier ;))

Both cars look disappointing, notes Frankel.

:t-crazy2:

The Mercedes is odd, the BMW just bland and unimaginative.

Let me guess: his favorite design in this segment is the XF. :D Looking "exciting" and "not odd at all" ... And it's British. Sort of. Actually it's Indian now - but to Frankel it doesn't really matter. At least it's not German ... :t-hands:

Wow, the F10 slaughters the 212 in the style dept. Those pics together don't flatter the E too much. The F10 has a "sexiness" that is completely missing in the 212, it just doesn't have any to me.

I agree about the 212's "odd" comment, and I understand how someone can call the F10 "bland", if they're looking for something fussy and quirky, like most modern cars, but whatever happened to appreciating nice and subtle, pretty, and sexy cars?

For me i love the new E and from those pics i take the E interior anyday and also i feel the New E exterior is awesome from all angles i really find the 5 er a boring car especially outside front end looks very boring to me I like the 5er side profile although i like the merc rear arch especially when i saw the car in real. The interior for me is hands down the New E i just love this new E.

The 5 will do great and i think its a nice car just i find it bland and the interior too simalr to the 7 and 3..Just my views

If you look at the pics off the interior i just find the E interior so much better i no many off you will think i am bias but i really find the E interior better.

I find it puzzling that people seem to be either 100% for or against, when it comes to the 5 vs. E debate.

Personally, I would be very happy with either car. To me, both cars seem like very good takes on the premium segment, with slightly different approaches to the sporty/comfort balance.

Design is subjective, but to me the 5er just looks bland in this picture next to the E-Class. I like the new 5er from a styling point of view. It's a very conservative design though.

Disagree on that one. I would much prefer the E to follow the 211's smooth style rather than this angular style. Some might disagree but I find this E's interior to be heavily inspired by the "previous" generation BMWs, like the E60 - it nearly got the double hump, it has the upright centre console and also the big piece of wood trim (ok i know the CLS has a big piece of wood trim in the middle but that was totally different). Perhaps the edgy interior has something to do with its edgy exterior styling but it lost some elegance imo.

If you put previous 5-series against previous E-class you could say the same about W211, a very conservative design. They changed roles this time, next time it might change again.

Uh Oh...looks like the two are ready for battle. Since I have warmed up to the E-class, I would love to test drive both models.

The 5 series design is much more simple compared to the complex and aggressive E-class design.

To each their own of course.

To me, the E just looks both more boring/conservative, and over designed/fussy. The 5 just seems more youthful/elegant/COHESIVE (not odd), and even bold.

I've seen lots of 212's on the road, and although the front is quite imposing, the rear is one of the most boring on the road, and the side profile is just too boxy and the car literally looks like a wedge. It's got an aerodynamic, and relatively swept back shape (albeit upright and formal), but the lines and styling ruin it to me.

The 5 might be more simple, but as in all forms of art, simplicity reigns supreme in many ways, just because the E is more complex and challinging to look at, doesn't make it better necessarily. Problem with cars today, is they're getting so quirky, people feel it needs to be controversial to be good. I find the E to have too many flaws to me personally, to consider it an ace design all around. The 5 I don't find any real flaws on, save for the front end perhaps, which isn't its strongest angle, however it in no way IMO is the fail that the E's rear is.

Interior wise, I don't like the cold and box style the E goes for. Reminds me of what I didn't like about the E60, with some "80's Benz" throwback vibe, the 5's shows better so far, pic wise at least. Materials wise we'll see, like I've said already of course, the 212's plastic and over-use of it kind of upset me, so I'm crossing my fingers the Bimmer will prevail.

It's been said many times here before, but all our arguments were reversed last time, E60 guys using the same adjectives to say why they prefer it over the 211, and M-B guys using the same adjectives to explain why they like the 211 over the E60, and the 211 and F10 shared many of the same "negative criticisms", as do the E60 and 212.

Now fast forward some months, and you hear the same aruments, just from the other "sides". Since when were M-B fans criticising others for being too simple/clean? And since when were they tauting aggressive, fussy designs, because they're more "intersting" to look at? Not in the past decade, that's for sure. :eusa_doh:

Point is, I think as always, when it comes to these cars, the logo's mean more than the designs, even if many don't realize it, it's the classic little controlling bots that BMW or M-B have installed in you. :D

:t-cheers:
Well said, my point's exactly as posted previously. Your point on simplicity is a really fresh approach to the future design IMO - the fuzzy, over designed trend (started by Bangle?) is no more! Take just one design element on the new A8 - the headlights, they are fuzzy, over engineered and 'messy'...ruins the rest of a 'clean and simple' design.

Maybe, just maybe...BMW planned this "(Year 2002) starting a new flame surfacing, fuzzy trend" - so that others may copy and try harder to be more complex in their future designs (wich is now, today, here)....and today they turned on something they started and came out the winner in that they BMW - are back to simplicity - that reigns supreme!:eusa_danc
