The new 5 has more in common with the W211, as it's more fluid and sexy. The W212 seems to have taken cues from the previous 5er. Looks like a role reversal to me!

Then I'll counter by saying that the design of the E-Class is more solid than the 5-Series design.

Well in the end it will comes down to solid and bold vs elegant and sport.

If the E-class had a better rear and less boxed upside profile...it would have been perfect.

You like the new E-class but you dont like E-coupé. You are strange :D

Indeed, you're right: I don't like the E-Coupe at all. I really don't...:t-hands: I find it messy, overdesigned, and the boxy design theme doen't flow at all with the fluid roofline.

While the E sedan is very cohesive, very elegant, very strong. Love it, really.

I selected the 5 series but honestly I'm underwhelmed. The way the hype was building up I thought it would be the best looking car EVER.

At this point I give the edge to the 5 because of the better back and luxurious interior but otherwise it's an even matchup.

Pretty much in the same boat. The sedan looks better in RL than pics, while the coupe looks worse - it suffers from chronic midget rear wheel syndrome.

Can't wait to see this car in reality (5-series)! Was at our Mercedes dealer today, and sat in the W212 again. Slowly, this car is growing on me. Very comfortable seats and I'm absolutely impressed by the Linguatronic. Great feature. Even the exterior starts to look great - especially as Estate version (they had a E 500 T at our dealer: price 104.000 € - absolutely out of the world, but with nearly every gadget you can get), but also the Sedan version. Nevertheless sat in the 5 GT as well. And wow, love the interior. Would be hard to decide which one of these two to choose. Both are definitely fantastic and absolutely gorgeous…

Is the E availbale with sportier seats? In the pic below, it looks like a sofa from the 80s, and I bet it is as comfortable as one too.

Compared to the modern looking ones in the 5er.

Sportseats are available with the AMG package…

standard seats are very comfortable, also without the (activ-)multicontur seats! But leather is a must have option in my opinion, no need for the Exclusive package though…

Apparently the only place I've heard harsh criticism on the e class design is here, all I hear anywhere else is that it's breath taking. Note This: if the 5 series rear end tail lights look better than that of the e class it doesn't necessarilly mean the e class tail lights are ugly. Second of all, what's up with the whole boxy look commenting about the eclass design? Have any of u who say that actually seen the car in person?? It is no where near being boxy at all, actually it's very curvy and sharp, so sharp that I sometimes don't dare to touch it!! And as for not being elegant and carrying busy lines, I'd have to say this is one of the most elegant cars I've seen in this century.

I dont think anyone has noticed yet, but even the camera actually looks up to the E class and looks down at the 5er, lol, I wonder why ??!!

Here is the proper angle shot that should be compared with that of the 5 series:
I still like the 5er tail lights more, but atleast you're doing a justice shot comparison....

Waw the more I look at the new 5 the more I like it! I mean it can't look any better, I have to admit that I didn't like the e-class in pics as much as I like the 5 series... The best looking BMW ever.... I love it.. Now I can't wait to see the 6series (my favorite BMW)

When I first saw the new e-class in picture I loved the front, I wasn't very happy with the rear... But when I seen it in person I loved it... Especially with sport-package... Well I guess Some cars look diferant in 2 divisions than 3 divisions (pictures)... So for now I will vote for the new e-class or else my bro Will kill me :P... Jk il just wait and see how the new 5 looks in person and make my last judgments... Can't wait

HAHAHA, NOW I WOULD'NT REALLY KILL YOU, I just say it as a figure of speech :D

Young brother, :), the reason you didnt like the E class as much when it was unleashed was because it doesnt look much improved in looks from the W211. I felt the same way too, as for the new 5er, it certainly replaces a much less attractive model.. Jusdt incase youve been wondering where that hype came from ;) ..

Interesting that you hear breathtaking as a comment on the new E Ali. All I here from my friends is that it is fussy and overdone and they say: "It is ok, but I really do not like it that well, seems like an old persons car design."

Personally, I have seen several new E's IRL and it just looks a bit akward from the side profile and to a degree from the rear. I find the new E to be a dissapointment overall and I wanted to love it.

The new 5, I love the rear, the sides are pretty good but the front is not my "favorite" view of the 5 at this point. I Need to adjust, the few real amateur photos I have seen posted are an improvement and the car moves up further in my design ideal and I like it much better from most shots/angles when compared to the pro release shots. IRL views will tell the story for sure.

The interior is contemporary and beautiful on the 5, while the E's looks just a little busy and dated when compared to the 5.

In my book the 5 wins over the E.:usa7uh:

Imo the new 5 series is better looking inside and from the rear. The front end of w212 is better designed than the 5 series but rear of the new 5 is very sporty. I wish BMW designers had given the front end more aggression. And although the 5 series is better looking inside, the E-class has the unique cabin layout which should be appreciated where as the 5 series is just a copy-paste of so many other bmw models.
I havent seen any of the two in real life so i am not choosing any one of them for now. My favorite mid sized german car is still the prervious 5 series in silver or dark blue.

BMW best in all domains

Interior or exterior, its design is the best in my opinion. As much as I hated the previous one, I love this new one. Well done !

The E class has made a great impression on me. I think the designers accomplished a great many things with the exterior styling and really satisfied a complex agenda.

I give the 5er the edge on interior - I can't wait to see if it feels as good as it looks in person.

Overall, I like both cars. I think they satisfy two very different personalities and are excellent in their own domain. The 5er speaks to me, but I'd love to be seen in an E as well.

Dude, European users see the new E-klasse at least 20 times a day every day they go out on the street. There's aready a million E-klasse Taxis here...E-class is as common as a VW Golf, and 5er will soon be too...
One thing is for sure though, the E class is boxy and the 5er is not. Both are pretty, and the 5er is prettier.

I couldnt agree more. I was trying to make my own mind up on which one I prefer but they both appeal in their own ways and both cars would be excellent choices. At the end of the day it really does come down to personal choice...

I'd have both in a heartbeat but I'd choose the 5er over the E-Klasse.

I prefer the Merc's interior but love the BMW's exterior. The BMW appeals to me more because of its dynamic persona whereas the E-Klasse reverts to the traditional 3 box design that projects the image of being hewn from granite.

This is a fascinating head to head contest with each car exhibiting the market-leading traits that their respective manufacturers are renowned for. I feel sorry for Audi as their contender is seemingly still more than a year away - in which time anyone choosing a current A6 over one of these bar-raising machines is quite obviously on some strong medication.

And without the exhaust system shown, the W212 rear is horrible:

even the E 350 CDI is not as appealing as the E 550 exhaust system…

+ for the 5-series rear. It also looks good without any Sportpackage!

Yes, the characters of the both cars are definitely different - that's also evident in exterior & interior design. Even more in driving characteristics. In the comparison tests E60 still has the driving dynamics edge over W212, while F10 is even more dynamic than E60.

Mind the F10 is 50% (!!!) more stiffer than E60, featuring active suspension, 4WS, front double wishbone, center of gravity lies much lower than in E60 - therefore it trashes E60 in driving dynamics (steering & handling - eg. in slalom)! Despite the weight difference. It's also also more comfortable than E60 (in Comfort mode). While in Sport+ the car comes close to E60 M5 handling characteristics!

F10 is therefore much more dynamic & driver oriented car.

Yet the Comfort mode in F10 offers more-than-usual comfortable ride (for a BMW - yet the F07 is even more comfortable!).

In the end it's W210 vs E39 match all over again. :t-cheers:
