Press Release The new generation of engines from Mercedes-Benz

Its great to see that all them rumours finally came true...also first time in history MB has launched an all new family of engines of 4,6 & 8 cylinders all at the same time..the engines sound great though, should surely have a mark the overall development on the ICE in general

Its about time! Can't wait to see what models the new I6 creates in the C and E-Class cars. Maybe the U.S. will now get a S400 to combat the 740i and A8 3.0T.

M
I believe most models will get a number "inflation" from the increase in HP.
The inline 6 in 402hp will probably be renamed s460

Reading all this stuff I noticed one thing. All the new I6 engines come with an electric motor. This means that the new engines won't be offered with a manual transmission!

What do they mean by "near-engine exhaust system"? Will the catalyst and mufflers be brought alot closer to the engine?
  • near-engine exhaust system

Yeap, the catalyst needs to be as close to the engine as possible, as its efficiency is a function of the exhaust gasses temperature. The higher the temperature, the better the catalyst works.

Unfortunately manuals are not MB's forte anyway...so shouldn't be too much of an issue, but would have been nice nonetheless..

6 cylinder engines and/or diesels are usually introduced a year or two after the facelift. The S550 is still outselling the G12 740i/750/A8 3.0T & 4.0 combined and then some.

Looking forward to testing the new engines within the coming year

Motor Trend is saying the U.S. models will be the (I6) S450 and the (V8) S560. I love that the "560" designation might come back, it's classic.

Does anyone know how much HP the new I4 will make? I must have missed it??

M

272HP with a twin-scroll turbo and 14hp of electric boost to kill the turbo lag.

But guys, please keep in mind. The new I6 gasoline engine doesn't have 404 or 408 hp. They just said that it will have more power than the outgoing M278 V8 4,7 liter biturbo. The final performance figures of the diesel and gasoline engines will be released later on, to make sure that other companies don't know about the figures yet.

  • near-engine exhaust system
Like in the OM654 the particular filter and catalystic converter and Adblue injection is near the exhaust manifold on the engine and not on the exhaust system underneath the car.

What is the big deal about the power? BMW already has similarly power rates for its I6. Same for Audi V6 and Porsche new V6.

Because you can fit this engine in cars with fwd. An I6 would be to big for a car like the CLA for example.

These engines are mind blowing. Them being mild hybrids is the right direction in killing noisy diesels. 272hp is brilliant for a I4. I am struggling to find the torque figure. Does anyone know it?

Are you sure this I6 is small enough to fit transversally into the CLA?

Damn, that's impressive! Kudos, especially for new I6... Bravo, MB, bravo!

E and C classes, especially coupe's, will be blast to drive with that engine under the hood... ;)

I don't remember a time when I was excited about engines from MB, took them a while but better late than never.

Wouldn't have thought MB would return to the legendary Straight-6 layout, but its happening:)..

can anyone point out any advantages over the modern V6, refinement is a given, but what about performance, efficiency, manufacturing.?

Only configuration better than an inline configuration is the flat configuration aka boxer configuration.
1. Naturally balanced shaft.
2. Less parasitic losses related to inertia.
3. Less piston frictional losses.
4. Better fuel economy
