Porsche boss Matthias Müller has confirmed long-running rumours suggesting future incarnations of the Boxster and Cayman are in line to receive a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine.

In an interview with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport magazine, 60-year-old Müller said Porsche road cars would follow the lead of the company’s hi-tech 919 Hybrid race car in receiving four-cylinder engines.

But while the 919 Hybrid runs a unique vee-configured engine, the unit being readied for the Boxster and Cayman will follow the lead of Porsche’s classic six-cylinder engine with a 180deg horizontally opposed layout as part of a modular engine strategy.

“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman,” said Müller. “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2.”

When queried on the output of the new four-cylinder boxer engine, Müller suggested it would boast “up to 400ps [395bhp]”.

Today’s naturally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine develop up to 325bhp and 335bhp respectively in the new range-topping Boxster and Cayman GTS models, which were revealed earlier this week.

Whaaat?

Well, at least it will still be a boxer engine.

I didn't understand one thing though: are they going to totally eliminate 6 cylinder engines from the Boxter/Cayman line-up, or will they still be available next to the 4 cylinder ones? [The power output of the 4 cyls suggests the 6 cyls are out].

Will reportedly be turbocharged & feature direct injection
Porsche recently introduced a Macan with a Volkswagen-sourced four-cylinder engine but new details are starting to emerge about the company's four-cylinder boxer engines.

According to Car Magazine, the company's new engine will come in three displacements and all of them will be turbocharged and feature direct injection.

The entry-level engine will reportedly displace 1.6-liters and have an output of 210 bhp (156 kW). The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will kicks things up a notch as it is slated to produce 286 bhp (213 kW) and 295 lb-ft (399 Nm) of torque. Last but not least, we can expect a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 360 bhp (268 kW) and 347 lb-ft (470 lb-ft) of torque.

The four-cylinder engines are expected to debut in the Boxster and Cayman before being added to additional models.

Damn, this just makes the current gen cayman/boxster even more appealing!

As a current owner of 2.7 boxer 6 cayman, I fully agree :)

what bothers me is that the current EPA rating with PDK is 22/32 mpg which is fantastic for a little sporty car,
the smaller displacement 4 cyl turbo will undoubtedly increase mpg (to meet strict future requirement presumably?) and boost torque down low but I fear that this will eliminate the high revving nature which myself and many have come to enjoy

Welcome to the dark future.
