MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWCAR CONCEPT FASCINATION FROM 2008
At the Paris Motor Show in 2008, Mercedes-Benz presented the FASCINATION show car concept, which was based on the technical basis of the E-Class. We show a look back at the model, which should integrate the emotionality of a coupe with new proportions: as a shooting brake. Later, the CLS Shooting Brake was used to connect to this show car.
CONCEPT FASCINATION BASED ON E-CLASS
The unique automobile concept FASCINATION combines sporty and elegant design with stylish functionality in an excitingly intelligent way. Because in the rear it offered a luggage compartment of high quality, made of wood, aluminum and smoked glass, which not only had a cooling compartment and humidor, but also provided a spacious transport space. The Concept FASCINATION should therefore fulfill two wishes: - for high utility value and for the passionate staging of a coupé with dynamic, exciting lines. With the show car, Mercedes-Benz gave new impetus to the well-known but rarely seen vehicle category of the "shooting brake" with its independent charisma. Without the constraints of a specification, the designers designed an automobile sculpture of the highest aesthetics, and wanted to demonstrate the high level of design expertise of Mercedes-Benz once again.
“SHOOTING BRAKE” BASED ON E-CLASS
The one-off is characterized by a dynamic design and at the same time takes into account the advantages of a large luggage compartment. Particularly noteworthy: the usable
space develops organically from the exciting and elegant lines of the lifestyle coupe and lends the showpiece charisma. The interior showed noble and at the same time extraordinary materials - processed at the highest level of craftsmanship. Uncompromising perfection and attention to detail made it an incomparable piece of jewelry.
A dynamic sweep from the front to the rear shaped the elongated body of the show car. As a result, it seemed dynamically charged and seems to be set in motion. This impression was also underscored by a long window graphic on the side, which, with frameless panes without a visual interruption through a B-pillar, created a closed tension curve from front to back.
Due to the flowing lines, the large usable space in the rear is integrated as if from a single cast into the vehicle body, which is painted in shimmering aluminum beam, visually stretches it and gives it a playful lightness. The door and rear windows are completely retractable - actually the basic genes of every coupé from Mercedes-Benz - so that the viewer may see the artistic staging of fine materials in the interior.
INTERIOR WITH WOOD AND ALUMINUM
A large panoramic glass roof and the arch of the uninterrupted side window graphics also made the interior look light and let the exterior blend with the interior. Generously used valuable authentic materials such as leather, wood, aluminum and high-quality textile fabrics as well as many lovingly designed details underline the sporty, stylish character of the show car in the interior.
The loading floor, which was about one meter long, was made of wood with protective rails as brushed aluminum. The floor could be opened to the right and left. Two compartments opened in which two binoculars and a high-quality digital photo camera with Leica interchangeable lenses were waiting for their use. A smoked glass lift table with a table cover-up function took up the middle of the hold. At the push of a button, it moves up out of the loading floor and opened a compartment underneath, in which a pull-out humidor was housed. In addition, the table could be pulled back, then it was easier to reach from the outside. At the same time, he releases an electrically swiveling cooling compartment for drinks and champagne flutes.
The chassis of the show car with three-link axle at the front and suspension link axle at the rear enabled agile, safe driving behavior with a Mercedes-typical driving culture. The top technical achievements also included, for example, the AGILITY CONTROL package with appropriate shock absorber control and the PRE ‑ SAFE® system with preventive protective measures for the occupants. The concept was driven by a four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2.2 liters and 150 kW / 204 hp from the OM 651 series, the predecessor of the current OM 654 diesel series.
In 2012, Mercedes-Benz launched the CLS Shooting Brake, a production vehicle whose proportions were a coupé, but with five doors and the roof stretched to the rear. Mercedes-Benz has also applied this concept to the compact segment with the CLA Shooting Brake. Today, the two models only produce the CLA variant - here in the second generation. With the introduction of the current 257 series, the CLS Shooting Brake was deleted from the product portfolio without replacement.
