G-Class [Spyshots] 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

I've owned a G-wagen and a Jeep Grand Cherokee with front/rear live axles and I'm not going to be sad to see it go. The improvement in on-road manners will be worth it to me.[/QUOTE said:
Well, I had Jeep GC also ( WJ ), but G class dont ( had 2 ML ).
For sure it will be more comfy on-road, and still enough capable offroader.
Anyway G class is often used mostly only on road, as "in" vehicle, so few owners really use G for what is created.
So majority would be satisfied with changes, while hardcore offroaders would not like cutting solid axle.
But for the future of G class, changes like less weight, better powertrain, gearbox, are necessary.

I really dont like the LED “angel eyes” daylight. Its sooo Bentaygish
They could do soo much better and something special just for the G.
For example they could do something like that, that just 1/4 od the rounding would shine (the inner part) so it would look like an eyebrow like all other Daimlers have, so it would fit to the family or that it would shine like the letter “G” etc.etc....shame for that, now it looks like many other cars have :/

I am very curious about the process involved in "metalizing" plastic components. It is any different from existing metal plating process?

Isnt the X-Class going to have a lump of alum. around the shifter? I think one of the fuenkommasechs clips had an engineer saying it was a big lump of proper metal and not plastic?

Bare minimum I expect are:
  • Easier steering
  • Improved turning circle
  • Higher comfort: e.g Active Body Control

Overall, this car has huge potential to give the Range Rover a proper competitor. The Maybach version could even lure customers away from the Bentyga. I rate it as the Mercedes' most important product launch since the A-Class hatchback.

The top end of luxury SUVs is big money and Mercedes have been caught sleeping. Hopefully the new G will be a smashing success and a benchmark in the segment.

A benchmark is what respect Luw? I think you’re expecting too much as this is a warm over of a well selling classic not a thorough ground up reengineering with the goal of class leading ride and refinement in its sight. The shape itself probably doesn’t even lend itself to class leading wind noise reduction.

I think we'll soon find out this is an extensive facelift or a new car from the ground up. Hopefully the latter.

If it is still (and I am sure it is) body on frame construction, there is no way MB to invest for an entirely new development for a car with a sales volume so low. For me the most interesting question is whether it will still have the three locking differentials or there will be some electronic brake applied lock simulation (of course for the central differential this is not possible)

They’ve already mentioned it still has 3 locking differentials.

It is somewhere in between, the body is all new, the chassis is heavily modified of the existing version.

Similar to the W221 > W222 platform transformation, but unlike that platform modification this one has been lengthened and widened. It’s significantly different.

Do you guys remember when MB wanted to phase out the G-class 13 years ago and replace it with the original GL? Good thing they came to their senses.

Exactly, the original GL always felt like an after thought to me. it wasn't what the customer wanted.
