It’s exactly what they wanted in the U.S., which makes sense because the U.S. market was practically the entire purpose of developing that vehicle.

I wouldn't say that. It was exactly what the U.S. market (SUV central) wanted and it has given MB a huge head start in segment. The GL/GLS has been a hit. I just glad MB made the right decision to keep the G along side it.

From a technical and utilisation standpoint the GL/GLS is far removed from a G-wagen. Unfortunately, the world has changed to the point that a G-Class can only be afforded by the wealthiest of customers, most of which have no idea / intention of off-roading to the level that the G-Class is actually capable of. As mighty as a G350 would be off-road, few will ever be seen doing so. So, Mercedes Benz had to improve it in areas unrelated to capability in order to pander to the needs of the wealthy softies out there.

Looks good in hunter green. For the departing gen, one of the Final edition G-wagens came in this gray-blue color that also looked very good.

Interesting how Mercedes internally calls it G-Class facelift in their "official" product lineup, whereas I had the impression (based on the discussions) that this is a whole new gen.
