Came across this Zeppelin Concept drawing, will there be any input from this on future S-Class?

The kick in the 3/4 window is indefinitely not in the tradition of the S-Class,
neither is the sideline.

I would not be surprised if the next S-Class takes on a little more sporty approach as this suggests.

I just hope the FL doesn't lose the vertical row of switches next to the screen in favour of the new unit on the new E-Class. This has been a trademark S-Class feature since the W221 and they should retain it for as long as they can because it has got a very high class and elegant look exclusive to the S-Class.
The W222 has already "lost" some switches there. I suppose the few left (back window curtain, brightness of screens) will be gone with the Mopf/FL.

I hope the next S-class looks nothing like that. The side line bump towards the rear of the car is a Bentley sedan thing:

Well...sorry to tell you this...but they already did it :)

The AIRMATIC button is near the joystick ( very good decision )
The PARKTRONIC button is on the left of the steering wheel
The ESP button no longer exists ( in the dash menu only )

So , what is left? :)

I remember the time I screen shot this image from a design video of Mercedes, then Maybach edition was not launched, hence I thought this would be Maybach. Even though am not sure whether the next gen S-Class would be this, I love the design and overall styling.

Great design for the next S Class or Maybach, if that the case, MB is moving on par with Bentley and RR Ghost direction. I guess?

I think that design sketch looks like what the Koreans used to do to copy British design, I sure hope the next S-class won't look like that.

That's most likely a rendering from the upcoming U class which is supposed to be the uber luxury model above the S class to be on par with the Ghost and Bentley FS. I was reading on their website that the next S class is going to be made to be on par with the 7 series and A8 meaning that they possibly may cut corners to make it cheaper and reserve the lavish aspects for the U class.

Who's website?

I doubt MB is going to compromise the S-class for the sake of a U-class. If the U-class does eventuate, it won't be at the expense of progressing the S.

Was not aware of the "U-Class", so I did my research. Interesting concept.

Is the U an actual proposed car by Daimler?

Nothing official from MB yet. The U-Class was a 2014 concept/design proposal by Scott Wu Kaiser, a transportation design student at California's Art Center College of Design.

"Mercedes-Benz will need to secure their dominant position in the full-size luxury segment while entering the higher priced market," says Kaiser. "In order to achieve this goal, the next generation S-Class will be designed and priced to directly compete with the Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series. A new class of vehicle called the U-Class will enter into the higher-end market. The letter 'U' comes from the German word 'üppig', which means 'sumptuous' and 'lavish'", he explains.

It seems to me that the U-Class is meant to be more of a "status symbol" car, whereas the S-Class has been and is used a catalyst to represent the ongoing improvement and refinement in automotive technology, comfort and driving dynamics.

The S-Class is the Flagship of the automotive world. In the past, whatever has happened to the S-Class has then spread to the industry (i.e. ABS, etc.)

Now it seems that the "U-Class" seems like a one-up in terms of luxury, and that's fine. We're seeing that with the Maybach models. The other advantage the S-Class has over it's rivals from RR and Bentley is its affordability for the same quality. A U-Class looks like it would be for an ultra-exclusive buyer type.

Perhaps a proper Maybach brand can be once again revived, with new models such as the U-Class and perhaps a larger SUV (GLU-Class?)

Mercedes would be absolutely bonkers to scale back the S-Class in order to squeeze the U-Class in the lineup. If anything the U should further the refinement of the S with handmade craftsmanship and super-exclusive materials and exclusive V8 and V12 engines. I would even further the exclusivity by revisiting the Ocean Drive 4-Door convertible.

The day Mercedes pulls another W220 is the day the S-Class dies.

I wish they would just increase the ability to customize the S with paint color and trim choices similar to Bentley or Rolls. Expand the leather choices that allow the interior leather to be a single color and make all switches that appear to be metal actually metal. I think this would have a bigger impact than an ultra exclusive car that they hope will compete with Bentley and Rolls.

The super rich are not interested in an expensive Mercedes or S-Class. They already tried that in the Maybach and it failed.

The S-Class is the ultimate Mercedes-Benz and let's leave it there.

If anything the U (and I think it's a stupid name) should be a one off's for loyal MB customers who would love to customize their own Mercedes anything.

BOOOO to all the concepts and drawings on this page. They're ugly and don't have any place at Mercedes-Benz.

I also agree that there is NO WAY Mercedes is going to water down the next S-Class to make room a car above it.

To capture those customers that like Phantoms and Mulsannes they have to come up with a one off vehicle that is still part of the S-Class family but is different inside and out, but again is still an S-Class. They had is right back in 1997, the Maybach by Mercedes.

Since that got changed to stand alone brand and failed, they've now gone to make the Maybach an even more opulent S-Class.

Now that this S600 Maybach is a hit I think they will further differentiate it at facelift time. It needs more customization options like a Bentley or Rolls.

The next generation should be a S-Class of course, but a one off that can truly be customized and has an engine not available in other Mercedes, but again a S-Class.

There is no reason why the S-Class or specifically a derivative of, can't compete at the very top of the market. It has before but it will take a truly bespoke car. Base it on whatever chassis you like but it has to trump the S-Class in presentation inside and out and offer an exclusive engine. Preferably a larger, exclusive displacement V12 with exterior and interior that is nothing like any other Mercedes-Benz. It has to be the most advanced car possible. It can't be trumped by the S-Class like the W240 Maybach was by the W221.
