S-Class W222 [Spyshots] Mercedes-Benz 2014 W222 S-Class (Spy pics & info)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).

sod all difference - even if you trust Jaguar's claimed weights:

XJ 5 litre S/C SWB - 1,945 kg (to EU standard)
S500(/550) SWB - 1,995 kg

In practice the Jag will be around 100 kg heavier than claimed.

The standout in the comparison with the XJ against the new S-Class is not the weight but the engine and hence fuel efficiency. The supercharged V8 in the Jag drinks fuel for fun, whereas the 4.7 V8 bi-turbo in the Merc, even with the about to superseded 7-speed auto, is an order of difference more efficient, whilst being even faster:

XJ 5 litre S/C SWB - 11.6 l/100km, 24.4 mpg, 20.3 US mpg, CO2 270g/km, 0-62 mph 4.9s
S500(/550) SWB - 8.6 l/100km, 33 mpg, 27.4 US mpg CO2 199g/km, 0-62 mph 4.8s

With the 9-speed auto in 2015MY and the S400 3 litre V6 bi-turbo in the range there's gonna be some serious butthurt with the 'lightweight' Big Cat.

So, you assume Jaguar's official weights are wrong, yet you completely trust MB's fuel economy claims? Speaking from my own extensive experience of the big three German manufacturers, the MB S 350 BlueTEC was by far the furthest away from the official claimed figures when I drove it. Audi A8 3.0 TDI quattro was around 45 mpg over 2,000km. BMW 730d 40.1 mpg over 4,000km. S 350 CDI BlueTEC? 31.0mpg over 1,800km.

As a comparison, here are the W222 figures against the W221 and the relevant BMW and Audi models:

BMW ActiveHybrid 7 (F01)

I have never see a single car weigh in at test time the same as the factory specs. There are literally hundreds of reasons why the weights don't match the factory claims. Factory figures are probably calculated on the most basic car possible, not the ones that show up at the dealer. Jaguar is no different from anyone else.

Exactly. The weights are based on the base spec model, and I'd be very surprised if Jaguar just ignore the rules regarding official weights. Many countries base their road tax on the weight of the cars, so there has to be an official method.

I appreciate the Germans taste for cloth interiors. Who's to say that fine woven cloth can't be luxurious? It's not like they use the same crap you'd find in a Toyota Corolla. Not everyone likes sitting on dead cow, or worse, imitation dead cow.

I guess it depends on the climate of the country. In South Africa, cloth is a no-no and I agree with that. Iceland, I'm not so sure..

a few points:

- all the W222's engines comply with Euro 6.
- ref. the diesels, the S350 BlueTEC might not be the quickest but as/more importantly it has the lowest official fuel consumption(5.5l/100km), besides, the Audi has the advantage of 4WD for fast acceleration and BMW's performance claims tend to be overstated recently.
- the V6 based S400 HYBRID has the same low fuel consumption as the 4 cyl. based Audi A8 Hybrid.
- the 9-speed auto due in 2015MY will reduce fuel consumption by at least 5% further and close the gap with the claimed sprint times of the Audi and BMW.

never heard of bmw acceleration claims being overstated, its usually otherwise

Don't forget in Germany you will still see this S-Klasse as the many generations before it in typical German Taxi beige , hence why an option of cloth seats. In Berlin for example you can hail an W221 Taxi as some fleets have them and it will be the same for the W222.
And before any of the uninformed begin you can order a BMW 7er in Taxi Spec as well as an Audi A8 in Taxi spec.

My objections:

1. not so powerful V6 Diesel

2. 9G won't be available until 2014. (why when they had plenty of time to develop it...)

Also, I've noticed it has the same wheelbase as W221.

People will not like this statement I am sure, but I can not understand how a time of 4.8 seconds for 0 - 60 mph is not fast enough. I mean what do you want to due with this luxury sedan? To me 4.8 is incredible.

I wonder if I should hold off for the 9G transmission, but then there is the risk of a new gearbox versus what is tried and true

I am just looking at the exterior and interior and asking myself WHY of why are people freaking out about the 0-100 times? This is S-class not SLS. And even if it was SLS so what?

Wouldn't you guys rather have the 9G sorted properly before it's release? Certainly MB thinks so, which is precisely why it's not yet on the S. The 7G was plagued with little issues, so I'd rather they get the 9G right before rushing it to market.

c'mon you think Mercedes knows better than this forum? Get out...

Agree 100%. I also think it is good to have some nice things for the facelift or whatever it is gonna be. A8 and 7 might be far away now but they will eventually catch up..
