According to the industry back chat at the NAIAS - The S-Klasse will be previewed by some per-production concept in Geneva with the actual car premiering in Shanghai - Given the lacklustre performance of Mercedes-Benz in the Chinese market , The S-KLasse will premiere in Shanghai in order to start a resurgence for Mercedes-Benz in the worlds largest luxury car market.

The difference is, MB is to develop 9G-Tronic on its own, right? Honda's and others will use ZF-designed (not produced) tranny?

I don't think the number of gears is going to be such a big marketing boon. Ford I believe has a 10G on the horizon which will surpass both MB's 9 Speed and the upcoming ZF nine speed to be used in BMW's and Audis.

I read an interview with a Ford engineer last year where he said it was the marketing guys that will be pushing the number of gears higher and higher. He said the optimal, most efficient number of gears is either 8 or 9. He predicted that 10+'s will still be produced in the future because it looks better in advertising and most customers automatically think more is better.

Did anyone else see the Mercedes commercial during the first football playoff game today (Sunday) indicating an announcement would take place on Superbowl Sunday?

Look at Mercedes, milking that Mad Men/Don Draper effect with John Hamm on the Narrating and the Rolling Stones tunes playing. :D

K-A you are doing an awesome job! A good critic always helps to improve some one, recently you have been a regular critic for what ever MB do, so I guess it could help them to improve.

Indeed. M-B need some good critics to get themselves back on top.

However that wasn't a criticism about the Don Draper/Mad Men thing, I just know what their marketing is trying to get across, being an avid Mad Men fan and all. :D M-B were smart to snatch up Don Draper as their "Ad Voice".

I just wish that commercial was for something more special than a new FWD Compact coming from a brand historically known for its high end Luxury devices. That commercial would have been a PERFECT setup for the W222. ;)

The article I read suggested a 10 speed was the 'optimum'.

Sorry, but I hate it when numbers are casually thrown around like that (I still remember having an argument right here with people advocating how 6 or 7 is the ideal number and 8 is one too many). The fact is there is no one number that is 'optimum' always under all situations. It depends on the level of technology, budget, engine's power band, the car's characteristics, the driving conditions, what you are trying to optimize for and possibly a gazzilion other variables. In an utopian world where the gears are made of unobtainium and don't weigh anything and don't take any space and costs nothing, you would have an infinite number of them to try and keep the engine at it's optimum rpm (which is what CVTs kind of try to do with it's own pitfalls). But short of that there would always be a incentive to add as many gears as current level of technology and budget allows for.

Hey don't shoot the messenger. lol. Of course what you're saying is probably true. I'll see if I can scan the article in just out of interest.

Yea, sorry wasn't aiming at you, but at the marketing guys at some company that probably fed some journalist the bs and even more at the journalist that regurgitates it with out due diligence.

Here's MB's recent opinion about a 10-speed again. Looking forward to read what Ford has to say! :D

As Mercedes cuts displacement, it plans on adding gears to bump up efficiency even more. It’s public knowledge that Mercedes is working on and testing a nine-speed automatic transmission. When asked when we might see it, Heil declined to comment but assured us that they’re hard at work on the technology. So why nine gears? “We see a ratio with nine speeds that is absolutely efficient,” says Heil. He continues to say that if they had seen any kind of advantage adding more gears, they would have. Still, he laughs that marketing could win out in the end. When competitors come out with ten- or eleven-speed gearboxes, Mercedes-Benz may have to play along and add more gears. Source: Automobile
