G-Class [Spyshots] 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class (W464)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

The interior is a fabulous modern interpretation of the classic G style, with a high dose of added luxury..prospective G customer's are in for a treat with the new model for sure, which will also surely be a first class luxury car in addition to the iconic off-roader it is, exciting times at MB!!

Still no pics of ambient lighting, I now doubt that FL will have it...

I have a question, which I haven't asked for years, like I originally intended. Why is that the W463 by itself, has been claimed to have been NEVER redesigned since 1979? As someone that did own a W463 several years ago, I am not convinced.

The W463 was considered a new generation at launch in 1990, just as the W464 will be seen as such. A lot of development was put into the W463 from the mid-1980s through 1989, including one design proposal I have photos of it from 1986.

So why is it people continually run with the narrative (mostly journalists), that it is a 40-year old vehicle? This is not the W460, which was discontinued in 1991 and replaced with the W461. I must be missing something.

In the 1990s, it was seen as the model generation dated back to 1990 and not any earlier, save for early presentation at IAA September 1989. The W163 from 1991-1993 was the codename for the redesigned G-wagen programme, partnered with Mitsubishi early on. MB went solo in 1992, in which it was proposed in clay from late 1992 and mid-1993 as with softened W463 cues.

By July 1993, they went with the styling proposal that was more BOF German Jeep Grand Cherokee, later frozen for production in February 1994 and thus decided to retain the Geländewagen past 1997. Fast forward to after presentation of the X164 final design in 2002, it was considered to be either the new G-Klasse (later GL-Klasse), replacing the W463 G-wagen after 2005. Again, it was rejected and W461 renewed, thus benefiting the W463.

I understand there are similarities between the W460 and W463, but they are still quite different (my perception). Since 1990, I consider it that the W463 has gone through a series of updates, refreshes, and facelifts and is the second generation G-wagen, an evolution of the first generation W460.

This will be the third generation (W464) in IMHO, so please correct me if I am wrong, especially as someone the same age as the W463 and only could learn about it post-1994 (yes, I have very good memory since early age).

I think that suspension, chassis, steering is 100% same on W460 and W463.
Only differences are in engines, gearboxes, electronics and interior. And some cosmetic changes.

I can't wait to see this. Mercedes has the HOTT hand with SUVS for 2018. New G, GLE and possibly GLS by the end of 2018. This is going to be one of the must have items of 2018.

Here's what Mercedes' 2019 G-Class and 2019 GLE SUVs will probably look like
Both models will adopt a cautious, evolutionary approach to styling

Mercedes-Benz has little room for experimenting with the design of its next-generation G-Class — after all, the G-Wagen is the brand's oldest and most iconic SUV and needs to stay that way.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class: still boxy, but wider and more modern

That's why all spy shots of the upcoming W464-gen G-Class we've seen so far reveal a very familiar silhouette even the heavy camouflage can't hide. To help you visualize how little the 2019 G-Class will differ from the current model, our in-house artist has come up with the rendering you see above.

Yes, we know it looks just like the current G-Wagen, but there are some subtle differences, such as the new LED headlights, refreshed bumpers, and broader body — the latter contributing to more interior space and better stability in corners.

However, most of the changes will take place beneath the boxy bodywork, with Mercedes-Benz reportedly planning to give its off-roader an independent suspension at the front and electro-mechanical steering. While the former will improve the G's on-road behavior, the latter is necessary to equip it with modern assistance systems that aren't available on the current model.

Other good news involves a weight diet made possible by the extensive use of lightweight materials, with the result being improved performance and better fuel economy. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is also expected to gain the company's latest generation of straight-six engines, including a 313-hp 3.0-liter diesel and a 408-hp 3.0-liter gasoline unit, both with mild hybrid systems. The 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission will also be added to the mix.

Top-dog Mercedes-AMG G63 and G65 models will likely get the Panamericana grille, as well as a fully-digital dashboard (that may be optional for all versions). The new G-Class is expected to debut sometime next year.

I don’t know what to do? New Range Rover or new G63.

To be honest, comparing what we have seen so far, the new Range Rover facelift interior is more beautiful and modern than this but there is something unique about the G63 that I love.

I did have a G63 in 2013 and the ride was unacceptable and tiring for a daily driver. I really wonder if it’s humanly possible to make the G63 actually have a nice ride? It literally has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Guess I’ll just wait for the road tests. I have a 2015 range rover and love it, but I’m wondering if I should switch it up. It’s a very good car, I’ve had it for 4 years. Have had lots of nice cars come and go in the meantime but I’ve kept the Range Rover because I love it!

Get a Bentayga.

The G-wagen has some kind of a mobster image and of course it comes from the fact that most of the mobsters use it. And the reason to use it so often is because it has straight windows and flat panels which makes it very easy to install a bulletproof armour, without being so obvious.

Yup.

My G63 looked mean and was mobbed out. Blacked out, even tinted windshield (highly illegal, I know :D). But I have the Rover with the factory blackout package, which is also stunning and everyone called it monster, too.

I honestly love them both. For different reasons.

RE: Urus and Bentayga.

Urus never crossed my mind until a few days ago. It’s a bit different but going to do more research. I’m not sure how I would like something like that as my daily driver. On the plus side, the base price is suprisingly reasonable (for a Lamborghini).

The Bentley is a dream to drive but I can’t get over the exterior.

In my mind, the only SUVs are the Range Rover and the G-Class.
