So back to sharp lines then again... (if the render is anywhere near accurate of course).

Hope it will be at least on par with the Z4 dynamically. The Boxster's mid-engine layout just cannot be challenged.

I can hardly imagine a compact roadster from MB, the SLK, with organic lines.

That said, I think that the rear is in major need of a redesign. They need to make it look less like the edge of a cliff.

Of course it can. A mid engine has nothing to do with that.
But MB won't make it as sporty because it's customers don't want that. And making it 'as sporty' as a Z4 shouldn't be hard, because the Z4 is among the least sporty Bimmers ever made.

Isn't this too early, the current SL is yet receive a midlife facelift

^ Agreed. It's the next generation SLK (R173) expected around 2020, while the next SL (R232) is expected around 2021. :)

"Why do we report on two cars that are not expected until 2020/2021? Because the modular design has a signaling effect - next the Mercedes crossovers will turn to a similarly flexible architecture. Because the new technology may share some modules with top notch artists such as the SLS AMG and the SLC AMG GT. And because such common techniques ensure the survival of the models." from the linked Autobild article above

Agreed, What's the purpose on a car that isn't due until 2020. The SLK needs a major, major facelift if the replacement is 6 years off. The facelift spy pics don't indicate this to be the case.

Mercedes-Benz SLK Coupe renders show great potential for Porsche Cayman rival

Theophilus Chin is back with a couple of renders showing a hypothetical coupe conversion for the Mercedes-Benz SLK.

It is too late now for the SLK to receive a coupe derivative but that hasn't stopped Theophilus Chin from creating what he believes would be a worthy rival to the Porsche Cayman. Maybe the next-gen SLK set to be commercialized starting 2018 will spawn a fixed roof version since in recent years Mercedes-Benz has developed a habit of coming out with several versions of the same model.

Until then, the current SLK which came out back in 20 11 will likely receive a facelift sometime next year and it will be one of the company's models to be affected by the new nomenclature so the refreshed model will get the SLC name to point out its connection to the similarly sized C-Class.

Out of all the Mercedes models the SLK (aka SLC) and SL are in desperate need of a serious facelift to bring the front and back styling up to date with current Mercedes styling themes. I hope they sort out the ugly fish eye headlights of both models sooner than later!

The biggest problem with exterior design of the SLK is best exampled in the lack of cohesion in the shoulder line of the car. The front and back look completely seperate and as if someone took two different cars and glued them together. A sports car's front shoulder line should NEVER follow the A pillar, but should continue through the door/.window line. The A pillar should flow into the hood accent lines.

The interior on the current model is nice enough, but the car lacks the driving engagment of most of its competitors. This one desperately needs the new 4 pot and the turbo 6.

^^That's a real nice sketch. One can only hope it looks like that and not the disappointment that the current car is. It baffles me every time I see that car on the road at how they thought it was a good design. SLK is probably my most disliked current MB.
