Testing on the next Audi A5 is underway ahead of a 2016 launch. These new spy photos capture the new A5 coupe on test at the Nurburgring in Germany.

They show an early test car mule, wearing cut-n-shut bodywork of the existing A5 around the running gear of the second-generation model.

What’s new on the 2016 Audi A5?
Designwise, the Ingolstadt grapevine is predicting an evolutionary approach to one of Walter de Silva’s very best efforts.

The A5 is unusually elegant for a mid-sized Audi; it’s one of the reasons why today’s A5 has changed so little in the seven years it’s been on sale.

Our sources in Ingolstadt predict a bolder front end with the now-trademark Audi singleframe grille, plus more aggressive and larger air intakes.

Expect to see the A5 coupe first, in spring 2016. Six months later, the A5 Cabriolet is due.

Both two-door Audis are based on the B9 components set of the next A4. Dubbed MLBevo, the mildly modified architecture promises to be lighter, stiffer and more efficiently packaged.

It brings a longer wheelbase for more passenger room, optional 20in rims, extra-cost carbon-ceramic brakes all-round, innovative lighting by LED or matrix technology and a host of new assistance systems are in the offing.

The anticipated engine range in the new Audi A5 family looks like this:

Audi A5 1.8 petrol 180bhp 1.8 TFSI
Audi A5 2.0 petrol 245bhp 2.0 TFSI
Audi A5 3.0 diesel 258bhp 3.0 V6 TDI

Lucky for Audi the current car is still a looker because it is as old as dirt. If this doesn't come out until 2016 the current car will be nearly 10 years old by then.

Exceptionally well-built and very sleek. However, many people do see them as boring.

On the flip side, many people are excited by their designs...they're doing quite well after all.

The current A5 is still a good looker (especially the RS5) luckily for Audi cause it is getting long in the tooth! This is one car they desperately need to replace cause with the likes of the fantastic BMW 4 series already launched and the most likely good looking C-Class coupe that will probably be revealed in the next 6 months or so, Audi will fall terribly behind its rivals

As the mule pictured above is sporting the current A5 bodywork, I can continue to remain hopeful that Audi may pull something quite fresh from its' hat.

Perhaps something similar to the scrumptious 2010 Quattro Concept-with a lenghtened wheelbase and a somewhat enlongated and more rakish rear end + C-pillar (unlike that of the somewhat revised 2nd edition 2013 Quattro Concept).

Actually, much appears to indicate that the next A7 will be moved "half a segment" upmarket. Closer in proximity to the upcoming D5 A8/S8 than is the case with the current car relative to the D4 A8/S8. "Tone down" may refer to a more "coupe-like, slightly notched" hatchback configuration that will alleviate the convexity (and thus, to some, somewhat "droopy appearance) seen on the current models' rear end. Otherwise however, the next A7 will feature more sculptured flank surfaces with more pronounced wheel arches. According to those who have seen the finished product, it exudes a very high degree of sculptured, elegant athleticism and is arguably the most beautiful Audi ever made. Alas, price-wise, it will move closer to BMWs' 6 series Gran Coupe models.

Personally, I find that Audi is making a wise move in presenting an evolutionary next-gen A5. The current car was presented over 8 years ago and arguably continues to look relatively fresh. To my eyes, the A5 is (in 2 door coupe form) to-date the most visually appealing Audi production car-ever.

I think the Headlights are not as big as it looks. You see the light in the picture below in the headlights, so i "professionell" edited the pic
But I think they will get the same Blizzard form as the new A4.

The current A5 is an absolute stunner isn't it? Audi focused on shape and form instead of design and LEDs. It's an absolute beauty despite the 4er having recently been introduced. I expect nothing but class-leading design when the new one is unveiled.
