The new S-Class will drive autonomously from the second half of 2021
The new S-Class will be presented on September 2nd, 2020. You can then equip it with an extensive sensor package (option). Mercedes-Benz will initially only enable this function for Germany.
It then works on 90% of the motorways. This is a traffic jam pilot that will be active up to 60 km / h and can drive autonomously according to SAE Level 3. The handover time is then no longer the same as with SAE Level 2, but 10s. In other words, the driver must be ready to take control of the wheel again within 10 seconds.
This new SAE Level 3 package should include the following components:
- Multimode radar
- Multipurpose stereo camera
- Laser (LIDAR)
- Cameras to monitor the driver
- HD maps (high-resolution maps of the federal motorways)
- A camera that monitors the traffic behind you
- Microphones for recognizing emergency vehicles with blue lights
Other countries will follow later. Tests are already underway in the USA and China. In addition, Mercedes-Benz can increase the limit of
this Drive Pilot from 60
to 130 km / h if the legislature allows it. This also applies to extended use cases. This update should then be installed over-the-air (OTA).
The system will not be active in construction sites and long tunnels. If new construction sites are set up, the S-Class recognizes this and hands the wheel back to the driver. These new construction sites are then transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz map service Here, so that other vehicles can also benefit from this new information.
The operating elements for this new SAE Level 3 system are located in the steering wheel rim above the thumb hollows on the left and right. If all sufficient conditions are met, the S-Class informs about this and the driver can activate the system.
Mercedes-Benz protects itself via the 3 sensor systems. So that the S-Class can always rely on 2 of the 3 systems. If only one sensor supplies data due to the low sun or other bad weather conditions, the system is not available.
Mercedes-Benz is of the opinion that the legal requirements for the security of the system can only be achieved with the triad of camera, radar and laser. Tesla boss Elon Musk sees this clearly differently and is of the opinion that the expensive laser (LIDAR) is not required even for SAE Level 5.
The new S-Class (W223) can also drive completely autonomously (without a driver on board) in designated parking garages. There was already a pilot project for this in the Mercedes-Benz Museum parking garage in cooperation with Bosch and a modified E-Class (W213).
The surcharge for this new system should not be out of the ordinary. It will probably be a mid four-digit amount. The engineers are currently assuming costs of EUR 50,000 to EUR 100,000 per vehicle at level SAE 4 or 5.
The MBUX interior assistant will monitor the driver's head and eyelids. The driver is not allowed to leave the driver's seat and is also not allowed to sleep.
As with the current SAE Level 2 systems from Mercedes-Benz, if the driver does not comply with the request to take control, the S-Class will brake the vehicle in a controlled manner to a standstill, activate the hazard warning lights and an emergency call to the Mercedes-Benz control center Put down and unlock the vehicle (so that first aiders have the opportunity to provide assistance).
Conclusion: What Audi and Tesla announced a long time ago and Audi has since given up will probably become reality in the new S-Class from the second half of 2021. Thanks to Mercedes-Benz, Germany will then be a pioneer and the first at SAE Level 3. But it is also clear that these functions will only be available to the first customers with Level 2 when the new S-Class is delivered in November 2020.
