I curious how this new design will work with the Maybach. Perhaps the S Class can get away...

This is a Maybach according to Motor1

i hope its feels better than the new GLE....with a starting price over 100k....it should no...

What parts of the GLE have you observed shake/move? My impressions of the GLE is that it's very robustly built. The only 'questionable' element in terms of the solidity of installation that I have noted is the A/C module, and even that isn't 'bad'. It's certainly better built than the C-class and E-class.

Just to be clear, I am talking very specifically about build assembly, not finish or materiality.

The inlay panel with the four air vents has a lot of flex and remind me of the inlay panels on...

Then “shaking and moving” is a bit of an exaggeration, no? You originally made it sound like it’s in a constant state of motion. I personally did not observe that in the GLE and GLS.

It’s doesn’t move like a loose tooth but flexes when pressed. The overall interior ambiance is great though and the cabin is less truck-like than photos suggest. Little of this is relevant to this thread as the W223 interior will be a drastic departure from the current lineup.

Is this the result of DR Z leaving?

Definitely not, even though my mind almost went there. In fact, I am wondering why anything like this would transpire under the famed Dieter Zetsche? He's what Dr. Wolfgang Reitzle would've done with BMW as CEO.

This is all Gorden Wagner's newfound, cocky adventurousness, which I already detest in the CLS and smaller classes. Only the new SUVs came out tasteful to me.

His first round of Sensual Purity was a mark of excellence. All designed from about 2009 sign offs to 2013 sign offs. Whatever the f**k he started during with signoffs for current MBs in 2014, 2015+, I am generally hating the overly angular + curvy look. AMG touches clean them up a bit, but otherwise look forced.

The design was frozen at least four years ago. Dr Z decided to depart in late 2018.

I think the new interior design will take some time to get used to.

Close, but not that early. Final design approval was roughly 40-something months ago, late 2016. That's what I heard. Design freeze was mid 2017. Something else is going on with MB Design.

Facelift W222 was done in the Sindelfingen studios as of June 2015. W222 itself? 2009, but it was originally due in late 2012.

Hmmm...
As you all know i have some doubts about the 223 from the beginning, specially because of 2 Things :

1.) The copy-paste Tesla middle console touchscreen

a.) first its no invention, but going back to a solution which was presented many years back by Tesla
b.) second its not as safe as the widescreen cockpit is (although it will have even autonomous drive 3.step) because you must take your eyes lower then before while driving
c.) third there's no controller, so you will be forced to point with your finger while driving or hope that the linguatronic in MBUX+HeyMercedes wil be reeealy advanced and top
d.) four its ugly, becuase you can see your fingerprints on it

2.) The 2-piece rear light

a.) First, even Wagener said in Toronto when presenting the 222, that the one-piece rear ligt is something, they are speically proud of, because this feature is their heritage in all S-Classes and makes the car different to their comparison which all have 2-piece (A8, 7, LS...the only one that hasnt is the XJ). So why is this rule broken now?
b.) The car will look as all other cars and will remind us too much to the W213mopf and the C257.
c.) Because of more slits on the rear, also the rear wont look so clean

3.) Front
I also hoped, that the 223 would have upright front lights (like Lešnik once told me in Ljubljana at the presentation of the 222, that first they ment to make upright front lights, but then the recession came and dr.Z said no, beacuse it would be too much, to outstanding for the situation) because it would remind us of the legendary W100 600 and would make the car look aristocratic. Now with this narrow and sporty front lights, Mercedes want to be like BMW. But thats not good. Mercedes is luxury, not sport.

I saw all pictures that are available on the net till now....i dont know..

4.) The buttons for the seats looking very cheap for me
- black plastic was ok for the 140 and 220, but then we saw in the 221 how its done, so why go back to the basics like a W212 has it ?
- the silver 'seat' buttons are too thin and too much together
- i'm affriad there will be no more illumination around the ''seat buttons'' ?

223-1.webp

5.) Ambient light
-seems cheaper to me. Integrated in the interior handles like the Audi A8 has it
- the ambient light sounds ambient for a reason, so no one should see the direct light, but in the slat in the console, you can clearly see it, like a Škoda Superb has it (really Mercedes??)

223-2.webp

6.) Plastic around the screen
- just WTF IS THIS ??
- on the other picture there is no plastic..what does this mean, that we will have to different options ? hmm..

223-3.webp

7.) Interior strips
- you can clearly see how its gonna be on the passenger side, so no more 'wrap around' design with the wood strips (like 220,221 and 222)

223-4.webp

8.) Ventilations
- i like the fact that they stay with the 4 ventilators like in the 222
- the position (because its quite high) reminds me a liiiitle on the 116

223-5.webp

9.) Stripes on the upper dash
- will be there some bi-stripes in the cockpit (alu with combo of wood) like the W177 has it ?

223-6.webp

10.) HUD
are we talking about a secon HUD for the side passanger or what is this ?

223-7.webp

11.) Indicator for lock/unlock
i like that the indicator was bringing to the front, so you dont repeatedly press it with your elbow while your arm is leaning

223-9.webp

12.) Bulge
- can somebody tell me what these bulges are for ? just an design element or some sensors for the self-driving-components ?

223-8.webp

i dont have doubt that this will be a great car, with tons of tec gadgets and safety features, but i m not sure it will be so specially, wo bulett-proof build and has his really own charisma which all S-Class had till now.

@Sonder I see that you have analyzed in detail many details hidden especially inside. I try to have my say on point 10. and if it was a storage compartment?

Beyond that in the first quarter Mercedes fell 80% in revenue and that the S is "the" generator of profits, I always believed that sticking to the dates is important in terms of the previous years before your competitor (7 series) Launch, you sell a few thousand cars more than when you have a fresh competitor in the market, (although in that context you sell more, the difference will always be less)
There is also this gap between the 3 series and the C class, what confuses me is for example that this does not exist in the GLE / X5 category that together with the Q8 were all released the same week

EXCLUSIVE - Mercedes production manager in the Corona series: S-class crucial to Daimler's future

Despite the Corona crisis, Daimler wants to bring its flagship S-Class to market on time, says Mercedes production manager Jörg Burzer in an interview with the Automobilwoche. Plant acceleration begins, not only for compact cars.
By Michael Gerster

Production of the current S-Class at Sindelfingen. Because the model is extremely important, the commissioning of the new generation at Factory 56 should take place as planned despite the Corona.
The crona crisis is currently violently disrupting the automakers' plans. Broken supply chains and production shutdowns also jeopardize major vehicle projects. At Daimler, the S-Class has always been one of the portfolio's largest technology carriers and profit generators. Therefore, the start of the new generation, which is planned for the end of the year, should take place at all costs ...

Sonder with the German Car forum list of grievances against the W223 I’m hip and I couldn’t agree more. I remember being so distraught after seeing the first interior pic of the 222 with the dual screen setup that looked like a RCA TV set from the 90s but as time went on and leaks progressed the interior started to shape up to something nice. Sad we can’t say the same for the 223 at least just yet.

OLED dashboard do not have to wait? Why no one uses them, because it is a great black color that does not blind your eyes at night.

@Sonder you mention a stip of alu running across the dash to be combined with wood. However, on the pic you use to show this, there is no trace of wood, just a thin alu piece.

If you zoom into the picture at the door trim surrounding the door handle and seat control, it could be dark wood and not black piano plastic. I think people are making premature negative comments, when only a small section of the door is shown and also the central vertical screen and we havent seen the interior in full yet. This car is a mule and probably doesnt use full production spec materials yet. Its a common thing to see this on not just Mercedes models, but BMW and VWAG products as well and when the production interior is revealed it always looks so much better.

I don't think it's out of the ordinary to air concerns about the new S. That said, history is on the side of MB: when the past 2 gens is S class were shown in either in mule form or prototype form, there was a fair amount of people that had reservations regarding the outcome. However, in the end, MB came out with two wonderful S class gens.

I have a feeling that while I have my concerns, many of which were perfectly addressed in Sonder's detailed post, I have a feeling the result will be impressive. I just find it difficult that MB would muck up the S Class. The S Class is Mercedes-Benz.
