I wondering what will finally happen with the new SEC rumor we had a couole of years ago. That rumor stated the next 2+2 SL would replace the S Coupe and the W223 would come with a variant with a sportier front end and rear, like the one the S Coupe would have.

Hi guys, after a time to diggest the spy pics of the W223, I believe there are some key similarities with some of the most recent and upcoming MB designs:

First of all, the side profile:

My current guess is the side profile of the W223 will look quite different to the W222 one, way less dramatic it seems. It looks like there is a very subtle shoulder line above the door handles, that will most likely be paired to a lower profile line similar to the A-Class one. Maybe MB adds a chrome stipe on the upper shoulder line, like on the Maybach 6 concept, of has tactile charome door handles like on their latest concepts.

In the same manner, I believe the rearlights are going to look similar to the GLE and GLS ones:

Notice how there is a provisional light on the boot lid part of the realights and said light is located higher than the other ones. This probably means the part of the rearlights placed on the boot lid is going to follow the CLS rearlights style, which can be seen already on the latest GLE spy pics:

Mercedes-Benz to launch ultra-luxurious EQ S electric saloon in 2020

Large-cars project boss Michael Kelz says a new model will join EQ range and rival Audi's next-generation electric A8

A luxury electric Mercedes saloon rivalling the upcoming zero-emissions Jaguar XJ and next-generation electric Audi A8 will launch from 2020, according to large-cars project boss Michael Kelz.

Unlike Jaguar and Audi, it will not be a variant of an existing member of the line-up – in this case, the S-Class – and instead be a separate model.

“We will have an electric vehicle at the level of the S-Class, no doubt, but it will not be the S-Class,” Kelz said.

The luxury saloon will sit in the new EQ electric range alongside models already seen in concept form – the EQ A hatchback and EQ C SUV (pictured below) – as well as a lower-ranking electric saloon that's more comparable to the C-Class.

The model will use a new modular architecture called MEA. Mercedes trademarked a number of names last year under the EQ brand, including EQ S, which will be the model name for the S-Class’s electric counterpart. Kelz said: “It will be a luxury, electric car, a top-of-the-line car.”

Referring to how the design of saloon cars, in particular, will change for electric powertrains, Kelz said “short overhangs front and rear thanks to the packaging under the floor and huge wheelbases” make it more difficult to convert the platforms of low-bodied combustion-engined vehicles to accommodate electric powertrains.

Kelz said he had already seen a concept of the zero-emissions large saloon and said such a car could roll out from 2020. The latest we will see it is 2022 and Mercedes has already confirmed that it intends to have 20 electrified models in its range by then.

Although the S-Class’s platform, called MRA, cannot accommodate pure electric, it can allow for a plug-in hybrid. Talking about the new CLS, also MRA-based, Kelz said: “We have not planned to bring this car to market as a plug-in hybrid, but it would be possible. As soon as we see there is higher demand, we could go for a plug-in hybrid in the CLS.”

Currently, the CLS is offered with a mild hybrid in theAMG CLS 53.

So this EQ S will look different from the regular S_Class that is due to launch about 2 years from now? Interesting if true. I can't stress enough about keeping all these products built like a Benz should be - quality should be just as high priority as all the tech and self driving crap.

A bit of a thread revival... I've heard from the grapevine that patents for the W/V223 were filed Dec. 2017/Jan. 2018, so if there's anyone with a patent login for certain regions (usually Germany and an Asian country like Japan)... they'll be able to extract some information like model lineup or potentially patent sketches (which I doubt would be available at this point).

We'll be seeing less spy shots than the W222 early since MB does signficant testing internally.

The W222's rear entertainment remote will be replaced with this:

I hope Mercedes elevate the next S Class interior up with increased use of more expensive materials such as changing the column stalks and gearshift stalk from black plastic to metallic with knurled rotating knobs as well as the center console add in more wood or metal strips with some engraved metallic patterns on the wood as well as some glass styled trim like the Lexus. Make it more exclusive looking and upper class.

The differences in design won't probably be earth shattering. Look at the EQ SUV. It is basically a GLC without the character line and a different front and rear ends.

I can only hope that the future M-B EQ sedans/sedoupes maintain the spot-on proportions of the ICE/PHEV MRA platform cars.

VWs' recently presented I.D. Vizzion EV sedan concept has me concerned that EV cars will resemble capsules more than automobiles. Need that necessarily be ?

The I.D. Vizzion sedan's proportions are not unlike the Jaguar I-Pace's. All of these vehicles have very long wheelbases for their size because of the electric "skateboard" battery packs in the middle of the car. The Model S does a nice job of masking this but I wouldn't expect the Benz EQ cars to look exactly like their MRA sedan counterparts.

Mercedes Exec Hints About 2020 S-Class' High-Tech Interior
Expansive digital screens with touchpad controls are part of the company's plan for the cabin.

All of the details so far suggest that the next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be a technological tour-de-force with possible features like cutting-edge adaptive headlights and extensive use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic to lower the big sedan's weight. New information suggests that the vehicle's cabin could feature a bevy of high-tech touches, too.

In terms of the general layout, look at the Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept as a suggestion of what to expect, according to Hartmut Sinkwitz to Car and Driver. The ultra-luxury SUV features pair of wide glass panels (see above), but it's more of a unified solution than current systems because the screens feature the same background. According to Sinkwitz, a similar design appears on the next-gen GLE-Class, too. Mercedes also intendsto expand the use of the touchpad control interface from models like the latest A- and E-Class.

"Look for greater uses of both direct and indirect lighting. Look for ambient lighting to expand its presence in the cabin," Sinkwitz told Car and Driver.

The new S-Class will reportedly arrive in 2020. Spy shots still only show heavily camouflaged versions, which makes it difficult to draw any conclusions about the final design. A video shows a test mule with Mercedes' Digital Light headlights that each feature over a million micromirrors that can precisely adjust the brightness to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles or pedestrians. They can even project the image of upcoming road signs onto the street as a way to give owners an extra reminder. This advanced tech could be an option in some markets, but regulations in the U.S. might not allow the system there.

According to a source within Daimler, they initially planned to release wood trims with ambient light in the facelift of the C/A217 S-Class Coupe/Cabriolet but this got postponed for the 223. What we see above in the pictures will appear in the next gen S-Class.
