2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class facelift hides subtle cosmetic tweaks in latest spy photos
Deliveries starting September 26
A near-production prototype of 2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class facelift has been caught undergoing testing with very little camo.

Mercedes-Benz is still testing the A-Class with some disguise on it even though afully revealing spy photo made the news at the beginning of the month showing the cosmetic tweaks prepared for the mid-cycle refresh. It will get slightly different graphics for the lighting clusters, lightly reshaped bumpers, a fresh alloy wheel design and a new green body paint.

More importantly, the 2016 A-Class is bound to receive optional LED headlights replacing the current bi-xenon arrangement. Some of the other updates planned include LED ambient lighting, a more generous array of safety & assistance systems, latest infotainment system (with Wi-Fi hotspot) and probably some new upholstery and trim options.

The engine lineup will be largely carried over, but the range-topping A45 AMG will get an extra 20 PS (15 kW) so its four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbo engine will have approximately 381 PS (280 kW) and will once again be the most powerful model in its segment, taking back the crown from the Audi RS3 Sportback (367 PS).

It is believed Mercedes-Benz will start taking orders for the facelifted A-Class in July so expect an official reveal to take place in June, with deliveries slated to kick off on September 26.

Mercedes Benz A45 AMG facelift Spied

Mercedes Benz is working on the A Class facelift and now the range topping A45 AMG facelift model has been spied. The front-end will be slightly revised with new intake design and front splitter. The headlamps will look similar to the outgoing model, although it could feature new LED lighting and sleek LED DRLs.

While the sides remain untouched, the LED taillamps at the rear will feature a re-designed cluster. Also, the A45 AMG’s lower diffuser get a slight nip and tuck for a more aggressive look. Reports suggest that AMG will fettle with the already-powerful 2.0-liter turbo petrol to return to the power lead in the hot hatch segment, after the title was taken away by the 362 hp Audi RS3.

Reports suggest that the next A45 will deliver around 381 hp, which is 26 horses more than the current model’s 355 bhp, and 450 Nm. It will retain the seven-speed dual-clutch autobox as well as the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Some reports say that an even hotter “A45 AMG S” variant, whose output could cross the 400 hp mark, thus rivaling the production-approved VW Golf R400, is being developed.

Says WCF.com. Goodwood Festival of Speed will take place over 25-28th June.

Mercedes A-Class facelift to debut at Goodwood

Mercedes has announced plans to stage the "worldwide debut of the new generation A-Class" at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

While the model is actually a facelift and not a new generation, the company went on to say the new A45 AMG will tackle the famous hill climb.

Mercedes didn't have much to say about the facelifted model but previous spy photos have shown it will feature a new front bumper and restyled lighting units. The model is also slated to have an improved interior with an updated infotainment system.

Besides the facelifted A-Class lineup, Mercedes will showcase the AMG GT S, C 63 S and the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 W04 V8 Formula One car.

Who are these marketing people trying to fool? Do they think they can get away with calling a face lifted model a new generation?

Up to 400 PS on the AMG version.

Wolfgang,

Any news about this HOT engine being made available for the W205 C Class? I remember reading an article about this possibility for markets with first-registration tax determined by engine capacity like China.

I think a C coupe with this engine will fly off shelves, literally.

Yes. Sounds like a great idea, Wunderkind. :)

More AMGs 'could use four-cylinder engines'
  • A45 AMG motor could be fitted to larger models
  • 355bhp unit could sit alongside V8s in range
  • AMG boss rules out diesels, but hints at hybrids

Mercedes performance brand AMG should consider fitting its potent 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine into a wider range of models, the firm’s boss has suggested.

The A45 AMG, GLA45 AMG and CLA45 AMG all use the four-cylinder motor, which produces 355bhp and has the most of any 2.0-litre production engine. All of those cars are part of Mercedes’ ‘compact’ range, but AMG boss Tobias Moers says that the engine’s qualities could be put to good use in other models - even ones that have traditionally used AMG’s trademark V8 units.

‘It’s probably something we should consider,’ he said. ‘We haven’t decided anything but in my own mind, as an engineer, I think it could be an interesting solution to have a high-powered four-cylinder petrol engine in a car that’s not a compact - maybe even a saloon. There are markets in the world where engine size affects taxes, and this could be an interesting technical answer to that.’

Installing the four-cylinder engine into a larger model wouldn’t necessarily preclude that car from having a V8; Mercedes has had more than one AMG variant in the range before, and as an example, it could conceivably sell a C45 AMG alongside a C63 AMG.

Moers reiterated that the critical acclaim for AMG's first four-cylinder engine would not alter the firm's rejection of diesel power, however. ‘The market for highly tuned diesel performance cars is very small,’ he said, ‘and in any case, you can have a performance diesel and it doesn’t necessarily give you such a big difference over a more modern, efficient, performance petrol engine.’

He confirmed that Mercedes’ burgeoning F1 success with a V6 hybrid is making that type of technology a more appealing option, though. ‘The guys in Brixworth [the UK base for Mercedes' F1 motors] pulled down the shutters and closed the curtains for a year and a half because they were working on the new F1 rules,’ he said, ‘but now they are open again. We have had a good relationship with them before and now this hybrid technology is something that we can start looking at.’

Updated Mercedes A-Class is greener than ever
The new Mercedes A-Class gets more economical engines and subtle styling tweaks, with more power for A45 AMG

The Mercedes A-Class has been given a thorough overhaul for 2015, including revised styling, new engines and improved kit.

Changes to the exterior are subtle, with a new diamond grille, optional LED headlamps and updated taillights. There are new front and rear bumpers, too, with the latter featuring integrated exhaust pipes to ‘emphasise the sportiness and dynamism’ of the new A-Class.

Inside, the new Mercedes will feature an updated instrument cluster and graphics0f19c9f479bdc177b6a3970c2d2abf44.webp on the dials, as well as new switches and buttons on the dash. Buyers will also get the option of a larger eight-inch central screen (standard on Sport and AMG Line cars), as well Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink functionality. There is a choice of new colours and upholstery variations, as well as ambient lighting that can be individualised with twelve colours and five different diming levels.

Arguably the biggest news, however, is that Merc’s most economical A-Class – the A180d (replacing the A180 CDI) – now matches the BMW 1 Series Efficient Dynamics Plus and Audi A3Ultra for CO2. Providing you spec the SE trim with 16-inch alloy wheels, the 1.5-litre diesel will emit just 89g/km and return more than 80mpg.

Elsewhere, both the A220d (replacing the A220 CDI) and A250 petrol get a 7bhp upgrade, while customers speccing the 7G automatic transmission now get ‘Launch Assist’ for faster acceleration.

At the top end of the range, the flagship AMG A45 is now even faster thanks to a 21bhp boost in power (from 355bhp to 376bhp). That makes it 0.1 seconds quicker to 62mph than the new Audi RS3, completing the benchmark sprint in 4.2 seconds – 0.4 seconds faster than before. It also has 25Nm more torque than its predecessor, at 375Nm.

Merc has also introduced a new Motorsport Edition, with design inspiration from the successful Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team. All A-Class Motorsport Edition models get petrol green trim on the bumpers and wheels, as well as air vents and interior stitching in the same hue. They also come with black leather sports seats – complete with petrol green details – and similarly adorned seat belts.

Prices haven’t been announced yet, though Mercedes has confirmed the Motorsport Edition package will be available on the powerful A220d and A250 models. Lesser versions will have to make do with the conventional SE, Sport, AMG Sport and Engineered by AMG trims, as well as previously announced Sport Edtion, AMG Night Edition specifications. The range-topping AMG A45 remains a standalone model, with no Motorsport Edition add-ons available.

The new A-Class will go on sale from 3 July, with first customer deliveries from September.

Whaaaat? Where did this come from? Why such a random leak? Why such an early facelift?

The standard vehicle now looks much better at the front.

Didn't MB learn from the VW Sirocco, nobody want's a green car!

Any interior photos? I hope the interior build quality has been stepped up. It doesn't look like the transmission tunnel has been touched, which was the biggest issue with the pre-FL interior quality perception.

What is mirror link?

It was long planned to premiere at the Goodwood FoS this weekend, Mr. Mercedes. Here's the Motorsport Edition, inspired by AMG Petronas, and available for all engines, but not the A 45. That color used in some of the accents is petrol green. :)

PS. The wing only comes with the A 250 SPORT and A 250 SPORT 4Matic.

PSS. Mirrorlink is the Android Carplay.

PSSS. It's supposed to feature lots of tiny "adjustments", perhaps to address some of the qualiy issues reported.
