There is two different options available one of which will use the touch , gesture part with the others being regular sliders.

^The vents were the interior element that struck me most ...

Driving: I do not have first hand experience as a G11 driver but pretty reliable info on it handling exceptionelly well. It was also tested against cars that aren't classic 7er competitors. Weight savings are obviously 'real' in the low 3digit kg range. What is much more important, as I here, is the 'Where' of the saving. The center of gravity is supposedly much lower and the weight distribution close to perfect. So, together with the great user interface, it's really not the underneath that might be the problem.

By the way: didn't some of you also have the impression that up to now, officials' enthusiasm about the G11 is kinda restrained?

I have not driven it myself but those that have have benchmarked it against its main competitors.
They say it sets new standards for the segment in the way it is more dynamic than before but can rival the best with its adaptive driver assist which extends the car's capabilities so it fulfills the roles of a dynamic luxury sedan to luxury limousine with great ease. The weight loss can apparently be felt especially in regards to the F01 and the S-Klasse.

We did it before the leaks.

This one?

Really like it in this chop.

^ This render ... it only gives away the headlight & grille design & stance pretty much VERY accurately (although the actual overall graphics of the headlight is more complex & richer - there's more decorative metalic trim present).

Everything else is off in details. Still too much F01 influence & styling present. The hood sculpturing is off. The front bumper (incl. air intakes & fog lights) is off. The side panels sculpturing is off.

The "leaked" pics of the G11 from the airport reveal how the front bumper actually look.

Regarding the side panels sculpturing ...
There is much VFL influence present (same styling elements ... except rear air curtains) but quite toned down. But the dragon-like shoulder line is there: starting discretely in the rear lights and getting more & more prominent towards the front rear arch. Consequently the shift between positive & negative surfaces below the shoulder line is different at the back as it is at the front : the positive surface, the bulge is more prominent at the rear ... taking the moment from the rear arch bulge ... and fading slowly towards the front wheel arch. All these result in a very dynamic & interesting sheet metal sculpturing ala seen on VFL but much less prominent. But it's there and it's a very interesting & intriguing styling element.
The positive surface below the shoulder line then slowly turns back into negative surface - in the line where air breather is located in the front wheel arch - and it continues way to the back ... where it "skips" rear wheel arch and a side character crease on the rear bumper but then continues on the lower part of the rear bumper (just above the red reflectors).
The lower side character line is very very thin & discrete and it's almost completely straight but it climbs slowly towards the rear wheel arch and then continues a bit more steeper on the rear bumper where it limits the negative surface I described in the previous sentence. Below this lower side character line (in another negative surface) lies the quite massive & 3D chrome decorative trim bar.

As visually attractive (to my eyes) and technically competent as the current F01 7 series is, it was hardly an overwhelming sales success in relative terms. That actually surprises me a bit.

Thus, it will be interesting to see how the upcoming G11/G12 "performs" in that particular context. Under the increasingly reduced camo, it appears very evolutionary. Of course, the smallest of details can heavily influence the "eye appeal" of an automobile and thus, the "finished" product will be of essence.

I'll readily admit to my viewing of the W222 S-Class as being the segments' "whipping boy" in terms of aesthetics. As good as the car may fundamentally be, I simply can't bring myself to like it. Purely subjective. I prefer the current F01 and current A8-and will most certainly prefer their respective successors.

Let's see what the market thinks.

Oh boy, they've definitely shed much of the fake panel camo now. Look at how flared the front wheel arches are. Smaller winter tyres make this mule look a bit overweight, but larger wheels will fix the proportions.

Well, that was the best we could do BEFORE the reveal.

The reveal is half a year aways and we have seen the leaked pics now. So are you going to do an updated PS with all the new details? The base is already there with that last PS..

Mummy likes from what I've shown her here (and in recent spy shots; also her favourite colour), but still says it's no E38. She had one 100% like this from December 2000 up to 9 years ago, when my dad replaced it with an E66 760Li LCI and stupidly exported it out of the US (I wanted it for myself).

It might be archaic (the E38), but that is the best of them ever in my opinion! In full regalia and with better angles, I hope the G11/G12 can look restore that athletic stance to the 7-Series range (just as most of us are hoping). (EDIT: broken link)

I loved their contrast piping. Do they still do that ? It looked awesome.

Yes you can get contrast piping as well as stitching through BMW individual.

The E38 is a good example of how today's progress has affected design especially within the packaging of a car.
Today's luxury cars can not have that E38 low sleek look especially at the rear as they have to provide exceptional luggage space not only in width or depth but also height.

Yep. Chris Bangle explains this packaging issue with cars nowadays (at 1 minute mark).

I miss Bangle. I really do. He is the only designer that I ever feel like I learn things from after listening to him. Hooydonk or Habib just make me want to hit my head against a wall... Really hard.:banghead:

^

Good Lord, really?

Bangle hijacked one of the most respected automotive companies design language in history and did a 180. That is the worst period in their history as far as appearance goes. Just look back and try to understand how his designs fit in with those before or after him. They look like they were designed by a completely different company (Japanese IMO).

BMW designs withstand the test of time, his did not.

Rant over.

The Bangle era designs in my opinion have stood the passage of time, the Z4 , E60 5er and E63 6er still look modern and of this age.
They have a general consistency to be individual but their design elements are what are commonly used today not just from BMW. Lexus is a good example with all those sharp edges very much from the Bangle sketch book.
Elements introduced in those cars to solve engineering and packaging issues are interpreted as a similar concept but differ visually.
This was the period when BMW took the worlds no 1 premium manufacturer from Mercedes-Benz so Bangle and co. Did something right with the visual appeal of that era.
