It’s quite a weird logic that you got there:
So people who say the S class is nice - they have a subjective opinion and the car is objectively crap
But people who say the Ghost is nice are objectively right, and every bad opinion about the car is just subjective.

mhmm... clever
Bingo. It’s so delusional it’s not even funny. Now there is a made up community that has panned the S Class now. What a putz.

This is internal combustion, not Fight Club. I don't think "this is a place to bitch about other members" was mentioned in Martin's OP.

That's not really my stance, I don't buy into the "design is subjective" mantra, there is certainly such a thing as preferences but I believe design has plenty of objective elements that can be assessed. No need for strawmans.

Even the Remove Before Race guy, who has every incentive to praise Mercedes, was measuring his words in his review. Not sure why you're trying so hard to spin this, the car was terribly received but you can still like it, two things can be true at once ;)

Here's your made up community.
Oh wait, Mercedes doesn't care about the opinions of social media users right? Tell that to their marketing department. You really have to have a complete lack of understanding of today's market to make such a claim.

Well, we can argue about wether design is subjective or something is objectively beautiful - and guarantee that we won’t find the answer because we don’t even know wether beauty itself is a universal quality or a human bias - but I think you gotta be very critical to distinguish between objective truth or biased subjective preference mistaken for objective truth.
Is this objective fact that you talk about measurable? When does a design become objectively more preferred? What are the requirements? - more people supporting X over Y? Cumulated subjective opinions turn into objective truth after they reach a certain level? What’s that level and how was it determined? And we can go on and on for quite another few degrees of complexity. Maybe let’s just accept preference as subjective and move on?
You can criticize the S class but IMHO it offers way more, and I want to emphasize it - way more for the money they charge than the Ghost for its own cost.

Agreed, I don't think anyone buys a rolls thinking it's good value for money.

I'm not trying to spin anything. I like the car, and that is all that matters to me. It's you that seems to need a following or a majority to tell you what looks good or what doesn't. You're sitting here running your mouth about this and people who actually buy these cars are placing orders so that tells me that the marketing department will be happy. I don't know who you're talking about nor do I give a shit who he is. Terribly received? No that hasn't been determined yet, that will show up in sales while you sit here talking out your ass. You're the one with no understanding if you think internet chatter is more important than orders placed and sales which are the true measure of success for a car, not what an idiot like you says.

Unfortunately this is the culture now, what certain people say most follow, brands, fashion, politics, everything is degrading because of this.... influencer culture... pathetic

You're fully incapable of remaining civil, it's funny how triggered you are, it's just a car buddy.
I'll be happy to go over sales in a few years.

Oh now, it's about civility? Hypocrite much? Now that your stupid trolling has been thrown out on it's ass you want to holler about civility? What a fraud. You're just a troll, and not a very good one. I'll be happy to tell you that you're full of shit then too.

I was criticizing the design of the car, based on what could be gathered from spy shots, before it came out. There was no "majority" to influence me. I agree with your sentiment, it just doesn't apply to me.

I didn’t even mention that, I particularly picked up on the overall “one say a 100 follows” reference because it’s really messed up now and it starts to have its traces in the industry as well, though I doubt it will be ever so large scale as what’s going on in fashion or very sadly everyday values...

A Rolls Royce has always had my respect due to its rich history and its reputation for been a wealthy "Old Mans" car, but I have never looked at one and said "SHIT I really love this f&cking awesome car and want to buy it" It just doesn't stir my juices.

I have always been inspired by the S-class as since the last 50 years, Mercedes Benz have always made each version a benchmark luxury car that raises the bar higher for technology, design, engineering, safety, comfort, aerodynamics and low noise levels and has been The Best Car in the World on so many occasions. I cant ever think of a Rolls Royce model that has set new standards for cars for any conceivable criteria except maybe the last 2 generations of Phantom models for their ultimate bespoke luxury and quietness/comfort. The Ghost just doesn't come close in this instance, I am sure the W223 will be a better car in so many ways. The previous model couldn't even come close to dethroning the W222 and I dont think this new model will either. It maybe a more expensive and opulent bespoke car than the S-class but for all round ability and technology its a major step behind.

Agree with you, and in my opinion a very important part in the overall discussion is technology - the S class indeed sets the benchmark for technological advances in the industry in many ways, they are pushing very hard now to keep up with Tesla on autonomy and electrification while still improving the luxury experience, while Rolls still tries to impress you with some LEDs on the roofline and special color stitching on the headrest...

We are here today as a civilization because of technological advancements, not because of purple and gold hand stitching on expensive leather... this is not a subject to be abandoned under any circumstances. For €250k+ I would expect my car to pick me up and drive home in the next two to three years, and we can see that that’s what THIS generation of S class will be able to do, while on the Ghost:

“we got a glowing dashboard...”

What is this new technology you’re talking about ? A vertical tablet from 2012? A VR HUD that necessitates a small bucket sized hole in the dashboard ? The option to push content from one screen in the front to the one in the back? Cameras and mics inside the car monitoring you ?

The only legitimately cool “technology” in the new S-Class is the 10 degree rear wheel steering, that’s awesome, other than that I don’t see it...

W222 had plenty of new useful technology, W223 not so much.

More than 40 years ago there were cars with electrically adjustable seats, 2 years ago electrically adjustable seats where they were available, it was an option and a costly one, I don’t think the car industry has much to do with “where we are as civilization”.

What cool technology does the Ghost have? The W223 has some innovative technology that is new to the industry that we have mentioned in the W223 thread. The Ghost doesnt compare to the technology available in the W223. The W222 probably has more tech than the Ghost.

So well said Rolf. I couldn't agree more and couldn't really put it better myself.

There is no Rolls I would want either. Even though the Phantom/s are well regarded (OK by the British motoring press really...), it's quite unattractive in my opinion. And at that price as well.

This new Ghost is hardly an improvement on the old one, and the interior is also so similar.

The S-class is phenomenal value for money in comparison, as it is easily comparable. Granted, not as exclusive, but you can't hold that against it.

I never said it had any cool new technology. My question about the W223 remains...you can defend your point without bringing up another car ?

Edit: I would argue that the new “dampers on top of dampers” suspension is actually a cool new technology but that’s really not the point, the point is, what makes the w223 a new benchmark ?
