To paraphrase the late, great Liverpool Football Club manager, Bill Shankley, "Some people think cars are a matter of life and death. That attitude disappoints me. They're much more important than that".
It certainly is. The song was a dig at the Smith's old record label boss, Geoff Travis, but the "Mr Shankly" is referring to the Liverpool manager.
