G60 rendering?

It's a 7er render. Proves how great could look with an alternative take on modernizing its classic design elements.

Maybe because I have a feeling what's coming down the 7er pike is going to be a bit too polarizing, but I find that to be kinda handsome. Those headlights need to be a wee bit wider to be actually be functional, but otherwise, that's not bad.

The game-changer here is the slight kick in the rear passenger window compared to the current model giving the car a wedge shape which makes it look slightly smaller.
The hood line is flatter while the roofline to the rear is slightly higher. The boot line dips down a bit sharper on the new one, making the car look more compact overall.

The G60 front and rear overhangs definitely appear to be longer than the current 5-series. Maybe the G60 could be the first 5m long 5-series model.

I think bmw need to do a big job for this 5 series generation
Cause as my opinion the f10 is much better than the f90 even now when i see is the street still i feel the f10 has more stylish design than the f90..which is disappointed

F10 is the worst 5er of them all. G30 is far and away better, particularly the FL, but to each his own obviously.

The front overhang indeed looks quite bad in that pic, sadly. Hopefully it's more the pic than the car...

Appear is the key word here.

I mean, pictures don't lie do they? We can talk about lenses and stuff, but it is what it is. That picture is as straight forward as can be. A straight on side shot with no distortions or anything.

I think someone on here has covered this before regarding lenses etc. But those side shots are definitely taken at different distances from the car. Does that make a difference?...I have no clue. All I know is that the whole 'overhang' debate has been covered before and usually blown out of proportion. Just to be clear, I'm not saying @Rolf is wrong because it does 'appear' that way but we will see in due time.

It's not. Every new BMW has bigger front overhang than the one replacing it, and this has been going on for a couple of gens already.

Every cm counts here. And then some.

Ok lets have a look at the overhang dimensions over the years from E39 till G30.

E39: 1995 - 2003
Front Overhang - 861mm
Rear Overhang - 1084mm

E60: 2003 - 2010
Front Overhang - 852mm
Rear Overhang - 1101mm

F10: 2010 - 2017 (M5 in illustration)
Front Overhang - 836mm
Rear Overhang - 1110mm

G30: 2017 - Present
Front Overhang - 862mm
Rear Overhang - 1099mm

Increase in front overhang from E39 (861mm) to G30 (862mm) = 1mm
Increase in rear overhang from E39 (1084mm) to G30 (1099mm) = 15mm

I would say BMW's lack of interest in front overhangs is relatively recent. The G series has been a clear step in the wrong direction in this regard.

Indeed zoomed in photos taken from a great distance (such as that G60 long shot) provide the most accurate idea of a car's actual proportions in the longitudinal plane, as that's when the car looks the closest to a 2D projection and the overhangs look the closest to their actual length -- just like the technical drawings posted above.

Conversely, the shorter the viewing distance, the more the view will be distorted by a fish-eye effect due to perspective. That's true even for a parallelepiped/slab-shaped object with a perfectly flat and rectangular side facing the viewer; that's all the more true for an object whose sides are bulging out and whose extremities are rounded off -- such as a car, whose shape is typically more akin to a pebble than a shoe box.

However, the way we usually view cars in real life is not from afar but from just a few meters away, in 3D, and in movement. Therefore our view will be very much altered by perspective's fish-eye effect and the actual proportions won't matter as much as our real life perception. This is why so many people are first taken aback by 2D photos of cars prior to seeing them in real life and realizing proportions aren't at all perceived the same way in 3D. The previous generations of the 5er have had striking real life proportions and it won't be any different with the next gen.

Well, the facts don't lie and I mostly stand corrected. Thanks @Rolf for all the data searching.

Based on the latest spy pics, I'd say the X1 mk3 is going to have a very similar front end to the G60 5er.
