SL-Class [Renders] 2021 Mercedes-Benz SL

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

As a proud former owner of the R230, I must admit that I am a bit underwhelmed by the new SL.

Sure it's good looking, but I would have hoped for something a bit more special. It seems they just took the AMG GT roadster and reshuffled the proportions a bit to allow for a (tiny) second row. I am sure they also tuned the suspension to be more comfortable.

BTW, I put the SL right next to the AMG GT roadster. You can see they are VERY similar design wise.

Thanks for the comparative photos, but they just serve to appreciate that they are two totally different cars (within what fits two convertibles of similar size of the same brand)

Depends on how you define "totally different" I suppose. To me, the new SL is way more similar to the AMG GT roadster than, say, the outgoing SL, for example.

Yes, it seems it is. And thank god for that because the design of the outgoing SL is just terrible, terrible, terrible

The R232 features M-Bs' most cohesive exterior design of all current offerings. Personally, I cannot detect a "weak spot".

This saddens me. The R232 is a swansong car-and should the EQS and EQE be indicative of the brands' future non-SUV design direction...well...then..."Good night and good luck.".

Having driven both the SL55 and the SL63 this week as well as seeing it completely unmasked.. it is undoubtedly a beautiful vehicle. Proportions are spot on. The seats are hands down the most comfortable seats in any sports car to date. This will do extremely well....and with it being 4matic+ as standard....will make for a fun drive in all conditions. An emotional car for an emotional time...they nailed it.
What suspension is it using ? Do we know yet ?

The facelifted SL is quite handsome in metal. It’s main weakness is its antiquated and staid interior.

The facelifted R231 is what the R231 should have been from the beginning. Getting really excited about the new SL. Don't think there is anything equally exciting coming from Mercedes in the near future (?)

The S63 should be interesting as should the C63. Their expansion of the Manufaktur program is great news too.

Unpopular opinion: But I really like the interior, especially in lighter colors. Even though I am a huge fan of the widescreen navigation/high IP cowl aesthetic (for example the E65 7-Series and W221 S-Class), this new SL's interior is shaping up quite nice.

I've come to terms with the aesthetics of how M-B employs their tablet-like screen. My reluctance still resides with how this or any touchscreen that is heavily dependent with it being utilized as a touchscreen (BMW included).

Also how well will this age over time vs. more traditional switchgear. A car like an SL or 911, I would view from the lens of it being a longer-term purchase, i.e. 10+ years.

Then again, I am not the target demo, so....
