The SL has never been a replacement fir the S coupe/Cabrio. Mercedes may want those buyers to move there but this isn’t the same type of car.

That is correct, it is not a replacement "perce" of those two, but it will be the option that remains within the brand in the top end and is much closer to them than what is today the GT Roadster, I do not doubt that some of those clients consider it at least

Mercedes-AMG will unveil the newest edition of an automotive icon on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at 16:00 (CEST) with the Digital World Premiere of the new Mercedes-AMG SL on our online platform Mercedes me media. Philipp Schiemer, Chief Executive Officer Mercedes-AMG GmbH, and Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG, will present the highlights of the relaunched roadster at the event. The world premiere can be followed live at https://media.mercedes-benz.com/amg-sl and will then be available as video on demand.

Next week is going to be action packed. A new Range Rover, SL and Corvette don’t happen this close together - EVER.

? call me when it’s electric.

Oh YES !

Comprehensible, classically timeless good looks combined with state of the art BEV technology. A stunning torque behemoth as well as a form of visual appeasement following the odd looking EQS/EQE sedans.

THE NEW SL ROADSTER IS ALSO AVAILABLE AS A 4-CYLINDER ENGINE

Presumably as an entry-level variant, the new SL Roadster generation of the R 232 series also comes with a 4-cylinder drive. The M 254 2-liter 4-cylinder with 390 hp and e-turbo from Mercedes-AMG is used here.

4-cylinder use in the new SL generation

While the M 254 2 liter 4 cylinder with 390 hp and e-turbo will probably be used as the SL 43 entry-level variant in the new SL generation, the 4-cylinder M 139 from AMG - the latter as the SL 53 4MATIC + The Affalterbach-based company combine E Performance with the P3 plug-in hybrid "AMG E Performance" module.
While the SL 43 will share the drive train with the upcoming C 43 of the 206 series (with e-turbocharger and 48 volt technology), the SL 53 uses the components of the C 63 e 4MATIC + with M 139 and e-turbo with 6.1 kWh battery on the rear axle. With the SL 53, around 450 hp are to be expected.

Top engines still with V8 bi-turbo

The SL 63 4MATIC + uses the M 177 Bi-Turbo V8 with 48 volt ISG and 612 + 20 hp. The top engine comes as SL 63 4MATIC + E-Performance with M 177 engine and P3 plug-in hybrid on the rear axle with an additional 204 hp. The short-term peak power should be 843 HP, the system output due to the lower continuous output is over 700 HP. On the other hand, there will be no 12-cylinder.

Yes, this news today has me very confused. The Euro engine lineup aligns with what I was told long ago. The journalists reporting that the AMG guys told them we'd be getting a 6 cylinder variant is what I can't make sense of. I guess we'll just be having very different engine lineups in the U.S. this time around.

Also notable that Europe isn't getting the SL55.

Euro engine variants

SL43 : 2.0 R4 (M254) 390 hp + 20 hp
SL53 : 2.0 R4 (M139) 450 hp + 204 hp
SL63 : 4.0 V8 (M177) 612 hp + 20 hp
SL63e : 4.0 V8 (M177) 639 hp + 204 hp
It doesn't make sense that the SL53 has more power than the SL63. 654HP combined vs 612HP. This cant be correct, maybe it should be 450hp +20hp.

It is correct, it gets the same engine as the new C63 AMG. In the US the new SL gets only V8 variants - SL 55 with 350 kw and SL 63 with 430 kw - both without eq-boost.
