Range Rover Range Rover (L405)

The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover. The Range Rover line has been in production since it was launched in 1970 by British Leyland.
I like it, but also don't like it. That is the worst front end flub since the 1-Series. How characterless, soulless, cheap, anti-arresting, anti-present, and generically meek and moderate for a car like a Range Rover.

It does have an air of "Ford Friendliness" to it that makes SUV's look designed solely for Mothers with Soccer kids, but not enough to ruin it. The rear I'm also not sure about. Looks both boxy and then trying to be soft with those overdesigned weirdly bent taillights.

Finally, the gills on the door add some welcome "pizzazz" to the side profile, but come off somehow a little crude and unfinished/busy looking.

Those criticisms aside, I think it looks pretty good and appropriate for a Range. I don't ind it at all, and if I was in the market, it would be a definite contender, BUT, that weak and "should be on an LR2" front may be a deal breaker.

Definitely reasserts its dominance as the true land yacht for the 1%. Nearly 1000lb weight loss is fantastic. Kudos to them on that!

Oh, this is the SUV with a capital.. oh, wait, you know what I mean. Lovely design, and the black roof certainly works for me.

Reminds me of Ford Flex, which I kinda like so I guess it is not all bad. I am sure it is imposing in real life.

I'm very disappointed that the interior is just an XL Evoque interior, one of the (many) highlights of the BMW Range Rover, was its magnificent, timelessly beautiful interior...

The United Kingdom's no1 status symbol car just got prettier. I see good times ahead for Land Rover. Their SUV lineup will be unbeatable next by this time next year, and this is just standard trim. I cannot wait to see in white with a black roof and black rims.

Ahh, those taillights are atrocious. Fix that and the entire front and I think it's a perfect evolution of the Rover.

Great! I like it, love it and confirmed it's the best Luxury SUV. Actually the best all-round car in the world;)

Cabin lacks the 'luster' of before, yet it works in a new modern way being or rather looking more minimalism....in all superb!

Is Land Rover implying this new Range Rover is 2 generations ahead of the previous car? Does anyone know if those grills on the front doors are functional or not? They look horribly tacky to me.

I think Rolls-Royce might have something to say about that.

Rolls-Royce is the final destination but the Phantom is far from a practical drivers cars. A black Range Rover is such a massive status symbol that is bought here by anyone with money or access to credit. This is quite amusing since Land Rover has extended the colour range for the new model but I doubt they'll be able to sway people away from black which is what 8 out of ten Range Rovers are.

If the Autobiography Edition is anything to go by, expect the top of the line Range Rover not too be far off a Rolls Royce in cabin class and panache.

The front of the previous car looks SO much better to me. Much more powerful, stately, and "real".

What does practicality have to do with anything? A status symbol is a car which tells somebody immediately where you rank in the social order, and you don't get much more of a status symbol than a great big 250K Rolls-Royce.

I'm well-aware of the attraction to the Range Rover, especially in black with huge alloys, in London. I'm British. It's clearly a fashionable car, but it's far from the ultimate status symbol. Even an Aston Martin is above the Range Rover.

Ooof... difficult concept to debate as it all boils down to one's perception of status i.e. what constitutes the "status symbol" value of a car? It is physical presence, price, performance?

Where does one draw the line between a symbol of one's status and the flagrant display of personal wealth? It's all too personal a perspective really...

For me though, a Range Rover is more of a status symbol than a Rolls Royce Phantom is. Weirdly inexplicable of course...

The status has less to do with price but more about the Range Rover's luxurious demeanor and it's brash size as an SUV that 99% of the buyers do not fully utilize as they don't spend time off-road or even have kids to fill the rear bench or boot with. It's excess, excess that has one hell of a band wagon like few other cars.

I must have a very strange idea of what "status" means then.

IMHO, status is all about wealth with a bit of class thrown in. In the UK at least, as much as a Range Rover may be fashionable, a black one with big alloys will most likely provoke someone to think the driver is a drug dealer or a Premiership footballer, rather than the Lord of the Manor which is what you used to associate with Range Rovers. The same problem has afflicted the Bentley Continental GT which is frequently regarded as a "bit naff" due to its popularity with Premiership footballers and people who live in Cheshire. The nuveau riche if you will.

For me, the Range Rover is a fashion statement rather than a status symbol.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom, on the other hand, is just about the biggest statement you can make about your status short of a G5.

All IMHO of course.

If you stuck a Range Rover next to RR Phantom along with their owners, do you seriously think the majority of people would say the Range Rover driver has a higher status than the RR owner? Exactly what do you understand the word "status" to mean?

The Phantom is more prestigious but as a social symbol the Range Rover is more significant since it's a car people see everyday, lust for and could possible own. It's a bit like brown monogram Louis Vuitton bag, they are not the most expensive bags money can buy, an Hermes Birkin bag is much more prestigious but the Louis Vuitton bag like the Range Rover represent superficial wealth. You see successful bankers, footballers, drug dealers, billionaire or a family man in debt behind the wheel of Range Rover. Regardless of who you are or whether you have money or not, it doesn't matter - if you're driving a Range Rover you are successful and have ticked off a box on the social climb.

It's less about how much the car cost but more about the social status it hold amongst all classes, genders and social groups in society.
